Hi Susie,

I guess it could be. Both my wrists are affected. There is very little

movement on the right wrist and it was very painful although since going on to

MTX

and Enbrel the pain is not nearly as bad. Could you get splints for them? I

found that they helped a bit.

Take care,

Kim, I think I would have the rheumy look at it. n's wrists

started to really bother her five years into the disease. She finds

relief from wearing a wrist splint at night. We just bought some at

a local pharmacy. Try to keep the range of motion in the wrists, and

the rheumy would be able to show you exercises to do that. n's

wrists got so bad that they had to be injected, which was very

successful. (n, 16,systemic)

Kim,

I would get it checked by the doctor. had pain in the wrists even

though no injury. She had to use wrist braces when she slept for awhile. She

was checked for Carpal Syndrome. The wrist pain with eventually caused

some numbness in 2 fingers. She took OT for a few months and wearing the

braces. Today the wrists dont hurt like they use to but I will see her stretch

her

fingers several times a day. Have the doctor check the wrist

, thanks for your response. I think she is complaining mostly that her

wrist is kind of aching. I don't see any redness yet. I am wondering about

carpal tunnel too, though, because she has mentioned it sometimes hurts between

the thumb and wrist. I don't know if arthritis would cause pain there. Thanks

for your help. Kim

So, then are you saying that arthritis in the wrist can cause symptoms past

the wrist? Thanks. Kim

Kim,

Unfortunately the arthritis can pop up anywhere it pleases at any time.Your

daughter is old enough to recall any injury and if it was an injury the pain

would have been immediate or very soon after.

It realy does sound like the arthritis is trying to settle in a new joint.I

have learned that there doesn't have to be much swelling if any, except to a

very trained eye, to cause alot of pain and discomfort and lost ROM.

Someone needs to look at it and your daughters reumy would want to know about

it.The meds she is on might need to be tweaked a bit or it might be time for

an addition or a change.

Allie has wrist pain. And it is in her wrist. We actually started in

the opposite direction...Aliies started in her fingers and wrists and

proceeded to her ankles, knees and toes. Does you daughter do a lot of

typing? I know in the past I have had wrist pain due to the placement

of my keyboard. But, it all could be related to Arthritis. Good luck.

Subject: wrist pain

My daughter starting complaining about her wrist hurting 2 weeks ago,

and is

complaining more now. It looks a little swollen compared to her other

one.

She is not aware of any injury. She has only had arthritis in her lower

extremities. She takes Sulindac and Plaquenil. I am wondering if anyone

can offer

me guidance here. Would you look at a new, never involved joint as

probably

being something unrelated? Does anyone know of other things that would

cause

pain in a wrist of a teen without injury? I am not sure if I should have

the

ped, an orthoped or her rheumy look at it. Though she doesn't have an

appointment set up for her rheumy and he is usually booked out pretty

far. Thanks. Kim

-Kim,

I would agree with what the others are saying... have the rheumy

check it out. I think it too much of a coincidence that a child with

arthritis and has had no sign of an injury, would suddenly start

having wrist problems and it not be related.

has a lot of issues with his wrists, I have only seen them

swell one time and that was his 1st major flare that got him put on

prednisone and MTX. He had swelling in his wirsts and all his

fingers on both hands. Even today when hes doing well, he cannot

write for long, cannot hold a pencil well, forms his letters in a

totally strange way (limiting the movement of his wrist) and is now

receiving typing lessons at school and has a little computer thingie

to prepare him for the higher grades when writting will become a

huge part of his day. He also has nightime resting splints, which

have helped a great deal.

I would suggest taking pictures, even if you cant see any swelling

there might be some there and a more trained eye ( ie, the rheumy)

would be able to pick it up. I had no idea Nicks hands were swollen

until my neighbor and my husband pointed it out to me. I took

pictures which the rheumy found very helpful as the swelling was

down some by the time i called and we got him seen. ( i tend to call

more when his fevers and rashes come back and not when his joints

hurt)

  • 5 years later...

My wrists and hands used to swell up in the night and the pain was pretty

awful. Some nights I would have to get up several times to soak my hands in

hot water to make the pain a little less. Then I thought about the gals who

sew and complain about the same thing. I got out my supply of cotton lycra

fabric and made a pair of gloves with 1/2 length fingers on them. I made

them tight enough that they put a little pressure on the hands. The wrist

portion was double layered and fairly tight. Then I made several pairs in

different colours and prints just for fun. Now, I very rarely have hand

pain and the little gloves allow me to use my hands for most things I did

before RA.

When the hand pain disappeared, I still had some wrist pain so I got back to

the sewing machine and made double layered wristlets that I could wear with

any outfit - also in many colours and prints. Sometimes I wear them just

because I like them and they keep my wrists warm.

I haven't tried the magnets but I sure will vouch for the gloves and

wristlets! I tried the fingerless gloves but found that they cut the

circulation at the base of my fingers and so opted for a half-length finger

on them instead. If you're interested in making some for yourself, I'd be

happy to send you instructions on how to get a good fit and how to construct

them.

Keep well.
