Guest guest
Dear Rivky, I, too, got a rash at the injection site after the 5th or so injection. Tonite will be my 10th shot and I don't get rashes anymore. They do go away as you said. I was not as shocked by the rash, because someone on this site alerted me to the probability of its occurrence, so I was ready. The last shot I took, I got a very light colored rash that disappeared after a day or two, but at the 5th shot, all the injection sites developed a circular red rash. I knew that it was going to happen, so didn't freak. You're reaction is typical, from what I've learned at this site. Hope you continue to feel good. I am not sure if Enbrel is working, although there have been some benefits so far. Keep praying, as I do! Guest guest
I guess I am one of the unlucky few who have had an allergic reaction to Enbrel. My reaction included swelling eyes, a terrible flu feeling, and a wonderful asthma attack (Difficulty breathing.) All this from just 1/2 dose by the time the 3rd injection was due it was clear Embrel was not a good choice for me. BTW I am allergic to many medications. Put it in the muscle good and deep next time and you should have no trouble!!
Guest guest
Dear , My rd told me the opposite, to put the needle in at 45 degrees and NOT in the muscle, but in sub-cu. If I get a bump, I rub it over and over to spread the med around. Did anyone else get infor to inject into muscle (I don't know if I have the stomach for that, am just getting used to sub-cu injections.) Would like to hear about this. Thnx. and Gillian, I just LOVE your messages!!!! Guest guest
I am in my third month on Enbrel, so far my site reactions are much as you describe. Not sure that anything really works except time. I rotate my shots from leg to leg then side to side on my stomach. So far that has worked for me, by the time I get back to " oldest " injection site I have plenty of room and normally cannot find the exact location of the site. I have also found out that if you wait for the alcohol to dry on the vial and on your skin, the injection has a bit less sting. Hope this helps. New injections should be given at least one inch from an old site and never into areas where the skin is tender, bruised, red, or hard. " I read a post on another message board about site reactions and wondered if a person could possibly divide the dose 1/2 in one injection site and 1/2 in another to reduce site reaction. There may be reasons, of which I am unaware, that this would be bad idea such as increased rate of dispersion of the med so maybe you should contact Wyeth to see if you can get an informed opinion on the matter. Also, what are > your recommendations for how to make it go away quickly, like > favorite lotions or rubbing it or not rubbing or something? At my rheumatologist appt last week the nurse asked me how it was going with the injections and I mentioned the site reactions I was having. She said to try icing down the area before and after the shot. The next shot I did that and had a far smaller reaction. (Size of a nickel as opposed to 4 inches diameter!) Not only that but I literally did not feel a thing when the needle went in. We'll see how it goes with today's shot. Kathy
Guest guest
I just started using Enbrel. What do you mean by a site reaction. After I give myself the shot the skin feels like there is a lump in there. Is that what you mean by a site reaction? Please help. Guest guest
My site reactions have been a red, splotchy oval, like 3 or 4 inches by 2 or 3 inches. The red area has been slightly raised. I think one time there was a small bump or lump at the needled point. But I've only taken 6 shots so far so I'm a newbie. I wanted to thank the person who recommended icing the area. I did this last time and it helped so so so much! Well, I also shot in my thigh rather than my belly, which also helped. I should know by now not to try two new things at once cause I can't tell apart the effect of the ice and using my thigh... but either way it was a much better experience than before. The site reaction was very small (a small red patch), barely noticable, and injecting into the cold, iced area was so easy and painless. Actually the ice was more painful than the injection! Had to remind myself that too much icing can be damaging! I'll report back after a few more times. And, thanks to the other person for recommending using the cream, but I've been avoiding cortisones ever since I was 14, had p, used cortisone creams on recommendation from a derm., which made the p spread like crazy. Ah well, no cortisones for me! > I just started using Enbrel. What do you mean by a site reaction. > After I give myself the shot the skin feels like there is a lump in > there. Guest guest
Thanks for advice. I have insulin needles. I get them every time I get Enbrel. The pharmacy sends it to me per my request. I never used them so far, because I was warned that changing the needle might leed to an infection. But you are right, I should use insulin needles. Next Monday I will follow your advice. I am going to see if this works for me. I have been getting an injection site reaction that has been lasting for about 5 days.. I started Enbrel 4 weeks ago and have had a cold, cough and congestion ever since. I was starting to feel like it was working and taking the edge off my pain. Guest guest
Hi Rivky.... I was away for a few days and am behind on my post reading. I recently brought up this topic as well as I was experiencing site reactions. My reactions came a few days after the injection and one got as big as my hand. Then a couple days later they dissappeared. My nurse told me what I was experiencing was normal and they will start to lessen most likely. This last time I tried my tummy ( SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE THIGH, for me) and the reaction was minimal. I was hoping the same as you.... I have received such relief that I did not want to hear that I could not take it anymore!!! Have a happy day. Guest guest
Yep, that's right about when mine kicked in. I used the topical cream like you're describing. I also took Tagamet during the day and benadryl at night. It didn't last for me. I think it was only a fierce hive for 3-6 mos. Now I just get a small red patch, much less of a big deal. Guest guest
Kami....I will sometimes get a pink itchy area but it goes away after a day usually. I wouldn't give up my enbrel either. I told a friend who had a similar problem, to take benadryl a couple of days before the shot and also the day of. it's helped her alot. I expect to get a pinkish itchy area and if I don't..that's good. sometimes the area is about 3 inches but will go away. I had a bad reaction to Humira....it was horrible...but enbrel is mild compared to that. Hugs..a In a message dated 5/10/2010 11:48:38 A.M. Occasionally I get a mild injection site reaction, about like a mosquito bite that is gone the next day. Usually after I inject, I rub some Sarna lotion or Gold Bond anti-itch cream on the site.
