They have a play area there and she really enjoyed that! I got her to agree to check out a couple of books and let her play for a while. When we left, we stopped by the coffee/juice bar that's located in the library. I figured I could get coffee and maybe Jacqui would see something she liked. Well...she did. Ice Cream Cake. I told her " no " . She had just had TWO ice cream crunch bars at home (yeah two...we are having a real problem with excessive snacking lately), and I told her no cake. She FREAKED!!! I had to escort her out, and while I was doing THAT she was yelling " BUT I WANT IT!!!! " , and grabbed the door and wouldn't let go! I had to pry her fingers off and drag her out. She yelled all the way to the car. Then she proceeded to berate me in the car, throw her books, open and slam the car door when we got home, etc. She came inside and said " Josh, it's time to get ready for the " thing of the fech " . (don't ask, I have no clue)...She had found MORE snacks and said " I'm so happy now " . Dang it! I'm not happy! I'm PISSED! I think she needs OT at home. Any ideas? Guest guest
I would definitely need a cup of coffee after that! If you were here I'd make a cup for you. Now, what did I miss about the OT at home?
Guest guest
I'm sorry that Jacqui is giving you such a hard time! Poor kid. I mean poor Penny! I wonder what is going on. It is always so hard to tell with these kids and that is such a pain. She could be getting sick, or dealing with grandma's departure, or getting ready for a big leap, but you just don't know! Well, I hope that she gets thru this phase quickly for you Penny. Amy H--in Michigan Kepler 5 ASD and Bethany 6 1/2 NT " Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. Guest guest
>> I think she needs OT at home. Any ideas? >> Penny, Well, we get OT at home through the school district here, but that's because is registered as a homebound student (we homeschool, but they classified him homebound based on the fact that his disability is so profound that there is not a suitable placement for him--they agreed that he needed services in-home...he is doing MUCH better having things brought to him instead of dragging him out for everything). I don't know that they would do that if he was able to attend any of their classes. Is there a private therapist where you are who does in-home visits? Perhaps through waivered services? Possibility of a one-time visit to eval and set up a program with periodic follow-up visits? FWIW, I am wondering if the meltdown was because the " snack shop " was in the wrong place---that libraries aren't " supposed " to serve food? I know that she is on a snacking binge, and it may be that a bit of that was about toddler-style " Gimme " tantrumming, but usually there is something behind a fit that big; having several new things in one go round would sure mess up ... Go to www.henryot.com and order the " Tool Chest for Parents, Teachers, and Students " manual...TONS of activities for kids...AND, it's fairly cheap (like in the under $20 range). Excellent resource. Drawings, explanations of the activities, practical, do-able ideas. I've been to the workshop---wunnerful stuff. Raena
