Guest guest
Hi Jane ...before I lost a lot of weight I had active Diabetes Type 2 and metformin was one medication I took (along with biologics for RA and pain meds.) I had some really major tummy troubles with it that did not subside in time, so had to go off of it and use another med. But I don't believe there was any negative interaction with my other meds. Guest guest
Jane, I have much experience with metformin. It is known to cause gastric distress sometimes. I used to have terrible diarrhea from it, but someone suggested eating some yogurt every day. I tried that, and it solved my problem. I think that it is a very good medication for diabetes. I also take Prandin, which stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin. With these two meds, I'm able to control my diabetes very well. My A1c's are in the low to mid 5's, which is within the normal range. For RA, I am on Enbrel and Tylenol, and tramadol occasionally. These get along fine with the metformin. Your doctor will no doubt keep a check on your liver enzymes. I was told that metformin is a folic acid depleter, so I take folic acid daily. Good luck with your diseases. If you have any more questions about diabetes, I'll be glad to help. I've had it a long time and have educated myself about it. The good thing about it is that you can take measures to control it, if you're motivated, unlike with RA. Exercise does wonders for diabetics, if you can manage some. Guest guest
Congratulations on the weight loss, Jane. Metformin is one of the few diabetes meds that may help you lose weight, at least initially. Most of the others tend to cause weight gain. Guest guest
actually, i just started on it last night...i think the weight loss is the drastic reduction of carbs and junk food! > > > Cheryle & Mouse, thanks for the input. tummy is a little...rumbly, > > shall we say! but not any worse than some things I've been on. > > we shall see how we fare. Guest guest
Yes, that'll do it, too! Do try the yogurt if the metformin causes stomach distress. I didn't give up on it when it was causing diarrhea, because I thought it was such a good med. Guest guest
Sue, thanks so much for the advice! We have a lot of diabetes in my family. I eat yogurt a lot for tummy stuff too, that's sure not a hardship, cuz I love the stuff. thanks again jane > > > Good morning all, I have been recently diagnosed with diabetes. Guest guest
Hi Jane, I wanted to add my $0.02 with metformin. I have found it helpful to back down my dose sometimes or to switch to the extended release formula to help with GI symptoms. Of course a low sugar, lower carb diet helps too, as does taking the med with meals. Yogurt is a great suggestion and I also buy acidophillus in the refrigerated section of the health food store for any family GI issues. It also helps with yeast stuff which can plague diabetics and us PCOS girls. Best of luck, Kate F ________________________________ From: jane <janeatregis@...> Sent: Fri, April 23, 2010 3:41:10 PM Subject: [ ] Re: metformin and RA meds? Sue, thanks so much for the advice!
