Guest guest
Hey, yall are right talking up my alley now! LOL I had grits for supper tonight, actually! Hey, I had an email friend from Australia who popped in for a surprise visit (yes, really) with her hubby and I thought I would treat them the next morning at breakfast with some good-old southern grits. I still get kidded about it, because they turned out to be a big bob of lumps! I was so embarrassed! Now they will never know what grits were SUPPOSED to taste like! Brown, South Carolina Lap DS 10/11/00 Dr , Marietta, GA (love grits with butter, grits with cheese, grits and shrimp, grits and eggs, grits and pork chops, grits and grits, LOL) > > Hey Mel: > > My DH told me that except for those in the South including Pensacola, FL. Guest guest
Yes Lori, Y'all can buy instant grits right next to the pancake mix at any self respecting grocery in the south. If you are really desperate, I'll send you a package. They have no nutritional value, so they are a terrific comfort food. I heard a terrible rumor about some YANKEES who eat grits with milk and sugar like oatmeal, but that is against the law in Georgia. In fact it might be a capital offense. You eat grits with butter or " red-eye gravy " , which you make by pouring coffee in the pan the you fried your country ham in. mix the coffee with all that grease and little bits of burnt ham and pour it on your grits. What? you say you've never had country ham??? Thats a whole 'nother story. So salty that you shrivel up. You have to soak it for 2 or 3 days in water to remove enough salt to make it edible.!!! I'll be happy to send emergency packages of instant grits to anyone in need. I'll omit the red eye gravy. W - former yankee if you can believe it! Guest guest
Grits with butter, grits with cheese. The ONLY way to go. Mix 'em up and they're heaven. We eat something very similar - I'm Italian. It's called Polenta. Almost the same thing, except we eat it with different sauces on it. Also yummy. Anyone ever eat polenta? Guest guest
OH Sandy!!!!!!! I am a confirmed polenta fan. I love the stuff. There is a small restaurant in LA, in the valley on Ventura Blvd. called............)sorting through my old memory packs).....Ahhhhh Posto's it is a great Italian restaurant and having eaten all over the good old USA I think they may have the very best Calamari I have ever eaten, There was no chew part at all. I was battered almost like Tempua and the calimari just melted in your mouth. I usually only go into the lounge and have Calimari, polenta and a drink the place is not exactly cheap. Anyway as usual I digress! LOL Yes as you can see I love Polenta. And I prefer northern Italian food over southern Italian, I was always more fond of cream sauces, go figure!! Guest guest
Lori..... I agree instant grits are yucky and they also may be illegal in southern states! LOL You can find them where the oatmeal is they are really easy to cook. I do not like mine watery so I cook them until they are smooth and starting to thicken, (note after they are done and if you let them sit they will turn into a thick solid mass good for smoothing into a square pan set in the fridge overnight, next day slice and fry in butter or olive oil serve with eggs, bacon and so on) anyway when they have thickened slightly I add my butter/margerine salt and mix it in so each and every little grit is coated with the sweet yummy taste of butter! Guest guest
Tiger ~ Yes, ahhhh - polenta. I always suspected we were sisters at heart! Soon to be switch sisters. Will I be even able to eat calamari???????? I haven't had a piece since my VBG. I can't believe I'll be able to reintroduce some of the foods I haven't had for over 2 1/2 years. God..... calamari? Guest guest
Sandy, they served Polenta one day on the Italian cruiseship we were on for two weeks in March. I tasted it and said...Hey, grits, we got grits!!!! I was so starved for some southern food and this was exciting to me! We were on the M/V Melody by the way, great all- Italian crew and food. I want to try it again someday, only next time I will be skinny! Brown, SC DS 10/11/00!!!!!!! > Grits with butter, grits with cheese. The ONLY way to go. Mix 'em up and > they're heaven.
