Guest guest
I've been having jaw pain and numbness for the last few months and my doctor suggested I see a dentist for a bite plate. She thought I was grinding my teeth and clenching my jaw in my sleep. Well I went to the dentist the other day. Turns out I need a root canal and 3 wisdom teeth out!! I had an impacted one out 3 years ago and it's the tooth next to that one that the root is rotten on. And this dentist said the wisdom teeth should all come out because there's no room- he couldn't believe my old dentist hadn't taken them out. They let me look at the X ray (it was a cool panaramic one!) and there is hardly any space between the back teeth and my jaw bone. AND..the Xray also showed that there is a root tip still there from the wisdom tooth I did have out. So if the root canal and having the other teeth out doesn't fix the pain and numbness they're going to go fishing for the root tip! And then if my jaw still hurts I'll get a bite plate. He thinks these structural problems will fix the problem though. YIKES!!!! I'm most worried about how this will affect my eating. I stopped going to WW in May of 2005 and I maintained my weight until November 2005 when I had the first wisdom tooth out. I ate and ate and ate before I had that tooth out. I had myself convinced I wouldn't wake up from the sedation and I also ate because I knew I wouldn't be able to eat afterwards (if I survived- it's kinda funny looking back now that I was that petrified of it!). And then when I could eat afterwards I ate and ate and ate because I felt deprived from just eating yogurt, ice cream, applesauce and other soft stuff. I've been trying not to stress about this. I'm not near as worried as I was with the first tooth (other than if they have to go in after the root tip!) I'm looking at it as it's something that needs to be done and will get rid of this pain I've been having. And it will only be for a short amount of time...after I'm healed I'll be able to go back to eating whatever I want. It's also brought back some of my self consiousness about my teeth. I have really big teeth and a small mouth which is part of the problem. This dentist told me that and I've been hearing that ever since I lost my baby teeth. I've always been self consious of this but hadn't really thought of it much over the last several years. He kept going on about it though and my family always did. I remember one of my uncles saying how big my teeth were going to be when they were first growing in. It makes me feel the same as being fat does- that I'm huge and not good enough. I know the dentist didn't mean anything by it- he was just stating facts and wasn't trying to make me feel bad- but that's where my mind takes it. Well thanks for reading if you've read this far. It just helps to sort through stuff by writing it out here and I know people will understand and be supportive. Yahoo! Guest guest
Thanks, that eases my mind. If you google root canal and cancer you'll find a host of articles on this subject. > There might be some quacks out there trying to claim that this might > cause cancer, but I doubt that it could. I have heard of the thought > that some fillings using mercury could cause problems, all the way to > Multiple Sclerosis and many dentists have switched to a procelain or > resin type filling material.Hope this answers your question. > Alana > > > > > > I have read alot lately about root canals causing cancer and other > > diseases. Do you know anything about that? Thanks > > > > >
