Dear Tricia,

I'm not sure I understand. Are you wanting to increase both the mtx & the

folic acid? Although folic acid helps with the side effects, it also lowers

the efficacy of mtx. I only started taking folic acid a few months ago.

Until then I hadn't really experienced any major side effects from the

mtx--even though I take 17.5mg/week. But when I developed horrid mouth

sores (within hours of taking the mtx!), my doctor started me on folic acid.

Actually, I think part of the problem was that I'd run out of Vit C for a

few weeks and that tipped me over the edge. Anyway, I'm still taking 1mg

folic acid/day, but thinking of eliminating it again. I've noticed the mtx

isn't working as well as it used to and I'd rather take less mtx than more.

So, to answer your question--I have no idea :-)

Hope something works well for you & you get the nasty dragon under control!

Teri

Dear Teri,

Thank you for your response. I read over what I

typed, and it doesn't make very good sense.

What I meant to ask was..at what point (mg dose)

of MTX in pill form..have the " rhuemy's " out there

prescribed 2mg. of Folic Acid instead of one??

Your answer did help though. You take 17.5 mg

of MTX and 1mg of Folic Acid..when you take

Folic Acid at all.

I imagine with everything else this turns out to

be an " individual " thing. What works for one, :o)

doesn't for another. :o(

Thanks again Teri, ~~tricia~~

Yep, I think it is pretty individualized. I know there are some rds who

wouldn't even consider prescribing mtx without prescribing folic acid,

too--and yet mine never prescribed it until there was a problem. When I was

at the diabetes clinic a week or so ago, the nutritionist mentioned

something about 1mcg of folic acid being the " normal " daily requirement

(making sure I was getting enough with the new vegie diet & all) and was a

little surprised to learn that I was taking 1mg/day. So, I really think it

totally depends on what other drugs & vitamins you take, as well as your own

body's response. One reason I think I got away with not taking the folic

acid for so long is that I take 500mg Vit C 2x/day (along with my iron).

I'm not sure why--something I read somewhere???--but it was when I hadn't

taken the Vit C for a few weeks (company changed the one I liked & took me

forever to find another one I could tolerate) that I ended up needing the

folic acid. Of course, that could have been coincedental. Any way, I hope

someone will be able to figure out the right amount for you. How much mtx

are you on? The 17.5mg I take is in the form of 7 pills.

Blessings,

Teri

Have you ever tried Ester-C? That's what I take, as

regular vitamin C tears my stomach apart. The

Ester-C is as easy on the stomach as mineral

water.

At this time, I take only 7.5 mg. of the MTX, but

have stopped Celebrex, and a couple of weeks

ago the Bextra (which replaced Celebrex.) The

disease needs a bit more of something to control

it, and I'm going to try some more MTX. (also take

8 mg. of Medrol daily, Xanax, and BP meds.)

From what I have researched, the Folic Acid does

no harm to the body, even in high doses, however,

it *does* interfere somewhat with getting total

benefits from the MTX. What I don't want, is any-

more side effects than can be helped.

So, you have diabetes also? What a bummer.

My body didn't like Folic Acid to much. I was able to take it still but only at

night. I felt sick to my stomach if I took it during the day. I can't take

multivitamins. Every time I try I get so sick to my stomach by the 3rd day I'm

off of them. Vitamin D pills I have to take at night. I take one a week. So

basically I would say I don't do good on these but I have been able to take

these pills to some degree. Sorry I'm not much help but I wanted to give you

what I felt.
