my son Colin who is not autistic but had huge speech delays and a lot of

sensory issues quit dairy on his own. His speech came in no time and he

stopped the constant jumping and spinning he used to do. Colin and Austin my

younger son who is autistic where almost like clones in their behavior but

colin always understands and would react when we talked to him. Now with the

diet Austin is on the same path.

My son began to violently scream at 9 months when he saw the bottle. He

would start sucking on it, and after 5 minutes he would begin to scream. If

you tried to put the bottle back into his mouth he would whack it out of

your hand. It got to the point where he wouldn't consume more than 8 oz.

the whole day. On top of that, he was still having difficulty eating baby

food. The doctor had me switch him over to regular milk, and that helped

for about a month, but then he started the whole screaming routine all over.

It got to the point where my husband and I dreaded feeding time. Little did

we know he was making a statement!

That is what the process known as 'legalizing' foods helps to do -

make it so that all foods are 'neutral', equal and available to eat -

when you are hungry.

That said, I did eat chocolate until I got sick of it, but it still is

more 'desirable' to me than other foods - at some times. I do actually

do better with having it on hand so that when I get into the 'crave'

stage, its better to have some than to go into 'grazing' mode where I

eat this, that and then some more because I didn't get what I wanted

in the first place - chocolate!

I'm terrified but I will go get Ice cream again today and focus on

trusting myself to know what to do with it. I read up on Legalizing

food. This article was especially helpful.

I'm into EFT and will be using it tons to help the nuetralizing

process. I like the idea of just woring on one past forbidden food at

a time. That's what the article suggested. I think that once I get

the hang of Nuetralizing/trusting myself around one food it will be

like the " hundred monkey's effect " and all foods will be nuetral

Proceed slowly! It's easier if you take one food at a time - buy

plenty of it - and don't yell at yourself for eating. Having these

things in abundance and eating them when you are hungry helps fight

the " forbidden " feeling of it. Too many items at once can be

overwhelming and scary.

When I first started IE, I bought two big bags of Reese's peanut

butter cups. I set them out for when I was hungry, and ate them

until I was full. This was repeated several times a day. After just

a few days, I had had enough of them and I discovered that all though

I like the peanut butter and chocolate taste combination, I did not

like the grainy texture of the peanut butter and the chocolate was

too oily in a Reese's. I didn't want them any more.

I could have, and still can have them, any time I want - but now I

would rather make peanut butter cookies - sometimes with choc chunks

in the middle.

Amazing the changes that IE brings!

I think the belief to not keep certain foods in the home is diet

mentality. If you want those foods, can you give your permission to

have them? Even if you do over indulge for a while? The reason you

might be drawn to them so much is because you have made them

forbidden. If you give yourself permission to have them whenever you

want, eventually you will believe that and be able to trust yourself

with those foods. Eventually the pull they have on you will

deminish. I was that way with both chocolate and ice cream (actually

I still can be with ice cream but it is way better than it used to).

I am now at the point where I really don't like chocolate that much

(gasp!) and acuatlly prefer other flavors much better. I keep ice

cream in my house at all times. Yes, there are times when I eat too

much. But I can now recognize what is going on (usually it's because

I'm too tired) and can allow myself to have it and not beat myself up.

I think there is a great oreos story either in the Intuitive Eating

book or maybe it's in Am I Hungry? by Dr. May. I can't

remember.

I have to agree whole heartedly with what Alana wrote. Strange but

true story whenever I used to crave junk food...fun food now, I would

buy some, eat too much of it, then I would panic as it was in the

house and I would finish it just to get it out of the house. I had

to work on that with Cheesies - I love Cheesies but lately have not

felt like them as I kept them around. Oreo cookies used to have such

a hold over me and once I gave myself permission and I had them and

truly tasted them I found I did not care for them.

This is kind of goofy, but the food I can’t stop eating is chicken. If I cook more than 1 piece or buy a pack or so, I can’t stop until it is all gone. I really can eat just one chip, and though I struggle with sweets, I can hold off somewhat, but chicken makes me loose control.
