A few weeks ago after seeing the nurse practioner at my Rheumatologist, she

suggested Alli (can buy at Walmart). I had Gastric bypass almost 6 yrs

ago, but the steroid med's and host of other med's that I have to take keeps

me a healthy appetite. I lost 148 lbs. and have gained 50 lbs. back over 3

yrs. To each their own about WLS, but after losing the weight the extra

weight off my joints was a great help with pain management. But damage to my

joints had already been done from the RA and still had to have a total knee

replacement and facing a hip replacement and rotator on my right. I figure

if my Rheumatologist approves of me using the med's to try to lose what

weight I have put back on then it must be ok. I am sure I would be monitored

while on it and if any side affects occur I would let my RA Dr know and stop

taking it. I guess try it and see if it does any good to make you lose

weight. The only regret after having lost the weight is the loose skin that I

have to carry around and it is just as bad as having the weight back on.

Hi ,

I understand what your going through. It's really hard to lose the

weight, when you hurt all the time. It sounds like your doing

everything you can to lose some of the weight. It's amazing for you to

be able to go to the gym. Just be careful, you can flare.

I use to take phen-fen back when there was a lawsuit. I did lose about

40lbs, but my life was different at that time. I was not on any other

meds, and I was in better health. I don't think diet pills is the

answer anymore. I believe eating healthy, and doing moderate exercise,(

if you can), is the right way. I do a little walking right now, that is

about all I can tolerate at this point.

You might lose some weight, but it will all come back. If you just ,

eat healthy, it's better for you. That is my two cents, there is no

magic pill.

Good luck,

Tawny

> I wish everyone a pain-free day. I saw my PCP a few days ago and I was

telling him my frustration w/ trying to loose weight. I am eating

healthy, going to the gym practically every day (I force myself to go

even if I am having a mild flare). Gastric bypass is not an option (I

wouldn't do it even if I was healthy. A friend of mine passed away from

complications).

> He wanted to speak to my psych about giving me phentermine. It's half

of phen-fen. He has mentioned that alot of his patients have positive

results from the medication and have lost alot of weight and that it

would be a good option for me. If I loose weight, it would not only help

with my self-estem it might help w/ my hernia. I am excited to try it, I

was wondering if anyone has tried it. I forget the name of the OTC

medication that was taken off the market a few years ago...I remember

taking it and it helped soo much with fighting the chronic fatgiue when

I was 1st diagnosed w/ RA and fibromyalgia. I take provigil now, but

it's soo expensive. I hope that my psych will allow me to try

phentermine; if any of my current medications need an adjustment I will

change it.

any side effects and if you lost weight?

Doreen,

Good for you losing five pounds!!! It just takes time, and we have to

be patient. Which patience isn't one of my favorite words. It sounds

like your on the right track. I'm sorry to hear about your hernia

though.

Have a good evening,

Tawny

> Hi - I tried Phentermine (Adipex-P)a while back, but had to

stop as it caused me to have heart palpitations. I was also told by the

doctor that long-term use is not recommended as it can cause heart

problems. My grandson's father took it for way too long and ended up

with heart damage - he's only 31.

> On the flip side, I've heard people have had good luck with it. So,

whatever your psych decides, I wish you the best of luck. Have you

considered not eating after 4pm? I have a hernia also - but not nearly

as severe as yours - that has been giving me a fit lately. If I eat

smaller meals and definitely not after 4pm, I'm not in as much pain and

I've heard that some have been able to lose weight this way. I'm down 5

pounds, but not sure if that's from post-prednisone or eating

differently. Time will tell.
