Re: Is it really hunger?

C,

I had one of those am I hungry or not situations happen last night. I

was having some sensation in my lower abdomen and I automatically

associated it with hunger...then I waited it out for about 10 minutes

and discovered that it wasn't hunger at all. By working with IE, I've

become more aware of my true body hunger signals...by paying attention

to the process of my getting hungry and what physical cues happen. As

a result, I've had multiple situations like the one last night where I

can now wait a bit and see what I learn about whether the signal is

hunger or not. I'm pretty positive that the sensation that I had last

night will never be related to true hunger and I'm going to continue

to track myself. Earlier in my IE journey, I kept a hunger log to help

me get clear about the process my body goes through after I eat until

the first signals of hunger(a knawing sensation) to the more desperate

signals of hunger (multiple growls and loss of energy).

It's been really helpful for me to recognize that I'm having a

" sensation " in my stomach area or other parts of my body...I know that

previously there were times when I unconsciously associated certain

sensations to a need for food...just to get rid of or distract from

the uncomfortable feeling in my body by eating. It seems that a

feeling of emptiness is a part of your hunger cues...it's a part of

mine's also. I've found that I just " know " when I'm really hunger,

which is different from thinking that I might be hungry. " Thinking "

that I'm hungry usually has to do with the fact that I'm bored or

uncomfortable and gravitating toward my trusty way (eating) to

distract myself. Trusting when I just " know " that I'm hungry has

gotten easier over the past months.

One thing I have come to notice is that besides being a fast eater, I

tend to not chew my food well before swallowing. When I chew more

throughly I don't tend to have heart burn issues :)

I remind myself that the stomach does not taste, so I get all the taste of every morsel of food. It has help me to slow down.

Excellent point Norma :) And a good reminder to eat only what one

wants to savor too.

For me, it seems to be more about the taste I want/have in my mouth vs

what my stomach is telling me.

Has anyone else dealt with this?

That is interesting. I never thought of that. I DO eat fast, and I

gobbled that meal down in maybe 1 minute or less. I'm always

impatient to be done with a meal, and I've always been that way. I

guess something I'll have to work on. That would make sense why

eating too fast gives you indigestion, it's not the speed perhaps but

the un-chewed-ness of the food.
