Guest guest
Emla doesn't take too long to get. It is available at the pharmacy, getting approval for it may take a bit but certainly not as long as the Enbrel. We pick *both* up at the pharmacy, you probably will too. Good luck to you and your dd! I hope this all works out great, I hear such good things about Enbrel. Lorie Enbrel We too will be starting on Enbrel once we can get approval from the insurance company and the medication arrives from wherever it comes from. Our daughter has rapidly ran through the meds and we are on to this one next. A couple questions--the injections I am fine with, an insulin syringe twice a week. We will try without EMLA and then if that does not work go with the EMLA. A couple questions--how long do you normally have to wait to get the EMLA? Unfortunately to be in the study you need at least 3 joint involvements. She had more than those before she went in for the cortisone injections last week and now has 2 knees. Too bad we can't back date the forms! Also do they (Immunex) mail it directly to you or does the pharmacy get it and then call. Our pharamacy is awful but the only one our insurance company will pay for so we are stuck. The pharmacist did not really know how it works. We faxed paperwork, mailed paperwork and delivered more to the pharmacy. I am hoping this works. e; mom to 14 y.o. with poly For links to websites about arthritis and JRA, visit: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Village/8414/Links.html
Guest guest
e, the way it works in terms of getting Enbrel from your pharmacy is that you need to give your pharmacy your Enbrel ID #, when you need a refill the pharmacy (at least mine) has to get permission from the insurance company and then they call their supplier and it is delivered directly to the pharmacy. It takes a few days so make sure you reorder in plenty of time. It's not a product that the pharmacy's are allowed to stock. Sometimes mine has one or two in stock but usually not. Guest guest
Dear e, Sounds like you're doing your job with all the paperwork and enrollment stuff. Once your pharmacy starts to do their job then hopefully things will go better. (I remember the hassle we had when we had to switch pharmacist due to insurance) Usually (hopefully) once all the initial work is done and they know your daughter will be on it--then it's not as hard to get it. Our pharmacist will order it about 2 weeks before we need it just to be sure we have it. Like someone said--make sure to call them when you are getting low so they can have plenty of time to order it. Also make sure you get it home and in the refrigerator as soon as possible. I found in the summer time (when my air conditioner went out on my van) it helped to take a cooler (just make sure you never " freeze " it) with me and put it in that as we have at least a 30 minute trip. (more if we hit road construction etc..) I hope it helps your daughter as much as it's helped mine. Good Luck! and Kate--7 severe poly and AVN
Guest guest
Hi looks you have enough info on how to get the embrel, i have found out some extra stuff that might help. be sure to call the embrel support # that comes with your med. they can answer alot of questions and are very good about calling back or letting you talk to a nurse.they will also sign you up to recive a magazine and a nice portable cooler to carry your meds in, also they have fridge magnets to remind you what days to take it. A big plus is to use there needle only to mix it up then use another one to inject it , theres are dull and dont go so well. I dont know the dose that you will be using , but the package says the solution is only good for a short time after diluted if you are like us we dont use the full amount in the bottle each time and it seamed like a waste to through the extra away, I talked to the embrel people and they said that it could be kept 14 days in the fridge after mixing . Be sure to use a alcohol swab and a new needle the next time to draw out the rest.all for now good luck --- boundforlondon <kmckell@...> wrote: > We too will be starting on Enbrel once we can get approval from the > insurance company and the medication arrives from wherever it comes > from. Guest guest
I have a friend who is taking a general antibiotic for her RA. SHe has it quite badly and has been on this tx for some time and she is doing very very well! Her hubby is a vet and she was reading about the treatment in one of her hubby's vet journals....talked to her rheumy and got started! For her, it is working wonders! debby [ ] Enbrel Haven't posted in awhile, but been reading behindthe scenes.Just returned from my gastro and rheumatolgist appointments. Doing well with the AIH, liver enzymes are normal, down to 7.5 mg of prednisone. But, need to stay on pred for awhile for "maintenance" to avoid a flare-up. However, my Rheumatologist said that my RA is still progressing despite me being on the prednisone. I tried taking Imuran 2 times but got ill each time. He now wants me to start taking Enbrel - which I agreed to in his office after hearing about it from him. But, of course, I had to do my own research and now I'm not so sure....one of the sides effect "may cause death", kind of bothers me! I know that those side effects are put in there to cover the all the bases, but are usually not the case, but I also remember hearing about it in the news. Anyhow, are there any AIH sufferers who also have RA and are taking Enbrel? If so, any side effects? Do you feel much better? Has it stopped the progression of the rheumatoid arthritis?Would really appreciate any personal experiences...as I'm already starting to feel like I will "chicken out"...then my RA doctor willnot be too happy with me...Happy Holidays to everyone!TerriNV

Hmmm -- let's balance out "may cause death" against "my RA doctor will not be too happy with me." Which wins? I'm only teasing you, really. Sounds like one thing to do is to talk again with the RA, bringing up the negative points you've found. Perhaps there is something about your situation that lessens the risk, or something that makes it exceptionally important that you take it in spite of the risk. I don't know anything about Enbrel, myself. It is scarey, isn't it? Harper
Guest guest
I've been on Enbrel for approximately 7 months and had immediate good results within hours and then got better and better for the next two months until I felt I was completely well. I have had no side effects. About 6 weeks ago I came down with a cold and the doctor recommended I discontinue Enbrel until I felt better. Almost immediately I had a terrible RA flair from which I have never completely recovered even though I went back on Enbrel after one missed dose. I have nothing but high praises for Enbrel and feel it gave me my life back. Feel free to contact me with any questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Good luck to you. Guest guest
This is a good testimonial for the other side of the coin. The AP doesn't work for everyone and it is good that other options are available. I recently had Xrays to access the damage that I have been noticing this year and the technician told me that her mother had RA but even after 15 years of methotrexate ( this is for you Mark) , her mother was able to work full time, had no damage, no abnormal labs, and was running daily. If I do indeed find next week that I am accumulating the type of damage that I am afraid that I am, I possibly will investigate its use also. Other options are talked down so often here, but I also have a friend who has been on it for almost 13 years and she does pretty well. I know that damage cannot be reversed, thus it needs to be prevented. I would not stop the antibioitics, just will add to it. I did become much, much worse on the AP, so that is where It think most of my damage has come from. I really took a beating for two years. I know for the first three years of diagnosis that I was just on Plaquenil I had so very little damage. I also had very little joint involvement. It wasn't until I started the doxi that almost every joint became involved. I am attributing this to possibly hidden infection in the joints that the doxi brought out, but every set of Xrays I have had since have shown more and more damage. Maybe it just goes with the disease, but I have always read that early in the diagnosis is when most damage occurs and mine has been the opposite. It has mostly occurred in the past two years. I think anyone who is considering alternatives to the AP does realize the risks, as all of us are our own investigators. We have to be. Guest guest
Elsie, I am not knowledgeable of Enbrel at all, but do know that some drugs like Methotrexate depress our immune systems; so, I suppose that may be the reason your physician had you stop the Enbrel. Do you think it is possible that Enbrel may, in fact, be part of your getting the cold or virus that you had? I just copied/pasted the following from the article Ray posted from LE Magazine about Inflammation, and came back to post it for others to see: " Caution: . . . It is important to note that the body uses tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) to acutely fight infections. If patients are showing any sign of infectious disease, drugs like Enbrel (that inhibit the effects of TNF-a) are temporarily discontinued. A new FDA advisory states that patients should be tested and treated for inactive tuberculosis prior to therapy with another TNF-á inhibiting therapy (infliximab). Since PTX, fish oil and nettle directly suppress TNF-á, perhaps these agents should be temporarily discontinued during the time when one has an active infection. " Best to you, bg > I've been on Enbrel for approximately 7 months and had immediate good > results within hours and then got better and better for the next two months > until I felt I was completely well. Guest guest
What about combining Enbrel to control the inflammation and Minocin and the full AP to treat the cause of the disease. Enbrel focuses on only the TNF, leaving other parts of the immune system unaffected? This is beginning to make a lot of sense to me in cases of severe and longstanding disease like mine. After all, Dr. Brown used the drugs of his day to help with inflammation when necessary i.e. NSAID's and prednisone. Guest guest
Hi ! Geoff here. >> What about combining Enbrel to control the inflammation and Minocin and the full AP to treat the cause of the disease. << Many, if not most, of the people on the list will use something to help control the flaring symptoms at one time or another during their treatment. The choices are wide and varied, from NonRx herbals such as RheuMax to Rx corticosteroids such as Prednisone and everything in between. There are some debatable presumptions about using most if not all of the Rx and OTC drugs (drugs that were Rx and are now OTC.) These tend to revolve around two major concerns: (1) Adverse events, AKA side-effects; and (2) Contraindications due to mitigation of one or the other drug or both. In issue one, some obvious and easy to see issues would be with Prednisone and resultant cataracts, bone thinning, etc. As to issue (2) one that *may* attach to Enbrel would be its target, the TNF, in which the drug limits or prevents a portion of the immune system from working while the AP would be used to supplement the immune system. This is something you would need to confirm not only with your physician, but with a known-sober and competent Pharmacist. Even OTC drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen carry issues along the same vein. Generally speaking, if you can accomplish the relief sought with herbals such as RheuMax vs. the Rx drugs, there should be better cooperation between the AP and the item used for symptomatic relief. For example the RheuMax and its predecessor, RA Spes, tend to enhance the AP effort, not fight with it. Am on metho injections, folic acid to keep my hair from falling out and prendisone tapers at the moment. I don't know if your knee surgery was for total knee replacement or not but, mine was.(both knees one in 96 and one in 97) I'm sorry you are having problems with it. I too am scared of Enbrel's side effects and never wanted to have to take it but, it is being forced on me and unfortunatly most all of us. All we can do is pray about it and hope for the best. when I was first told that I HAD to go on it,,, it threw me into a deep drepession for two weeks but, God, my family ,my boyfriend and the people in this group were there for me and pulled me through. hope you are doing better today :-) ~ in N.C.~

Guest guest
Stacey, I have been on Enbrel now since August and it truly was the miracle drug for me. I had a foot surgery that turned into the surgery from hell just like you, and I couldn't get it under control. The Enbrel started working on the second shot. It gives you such a boost of energy that is really been a godsend for me. As for infections, I know you have to be very alert. I find that I feel like I get colds and other viruses more often, and they take longer to get over, but I have had no problems with bacterial infection at all. I've really had no bad side effects and nothing but normal looking fingers and increased energy. My only complaint is the dull Enbrel needles and I can deal with that if I have my life back. [ ] ENBREL Hello! I am a new member and wanted to say hi and ask everyone a couple of questions. I am 22 and have had pa for almost 6 years. I recently had my 2nd knee surgery which was supposed to be my " miracle " surgery-- it has been more of a nightmare. I have been out of work for 8 months now and have so much swelling I can hardly move. I have been on metho and am now taking pred. which is helping somewhat. My dr wants me to start enbrel injections as soon as possible. I am very worried about long term effects( fertility and pregnancy, mainly) And am also concerned with the large possibility of infections. My immune system is pretty poor as it is! I was wondering what kind of experiences you all have had with enbrel. What side effects? How long you've been on it, etc! I would appreciate any info you have!!! It feels like I'm out of other options and I just want my life back! Thanks for your help! Have a good day! ---

I only have one problem in my Achilles tendon, otherwise, I feel perfect. I 've had no side effect other than some bruising on my stomach. I only inject there because I don't want the marks on my legs. I'm also wondering about a spot on my lip that's been removed twice and keeps coming back. I know that malignancies occur with Enbrel, does anyone think that Enbrel may cause skin cancer? Just curious. I'm going in for a biopsy as soon as I can get an appointment.
