Guest guest
hi Abby,
a few months ago i did a CT to both knees. i know i have a tilt on my left knee for 12 years, after dislocating it and i have NO tilt on my right leg-i also have other x-rays and " sky views " to show it.
so when i recieved the ct results i couldn't stop laughing: they showed NO tilt on the left leg, but a very nice tilt on my RIGHT!!
so here's the human factor: a technician that put the " R " insead of the " L " .

all OS that i met since agree that it is a mistake in the hospital..

although i do hope those things are rare, if your knees are in such a bad state, and the mri shows nothing, i wouldn't rule out the human factor.. still, it's more logical that your mri just " missed " pathologies.

about the alignment:
i don't know how bad your CP is, but if you have a malalignment that causes you so many problems, did you consider a Tibial tubercle Transfer?
if this op succeeds, it is supposed to stop the wearing away of cartilage, and all other symptoms that go with malalignment. after that, you might not need the TKR.

a TKR at your age sounds too soon to me...

-Sigal
Guest guest
Hi Sigal! Yes, the doctor mentioned a tibial osteomy...but said that it won't be till the alignment was worse and my legs were bowed more. But the more I think about it, if they correct the alignment now, that would possibly prevent worse wear and tear down the road, wouldn't it? I know their biggest concern is the defect, not the alignment, but the alignment is what caused the defect in the first place!!! ARGH!! See, this is what really frustrates me...what seems common sense to me, doesn't seem to seem that way to the doctors!! I have a feeling that at my age, ANY doctor is hesistant to do surgery, espcially anything major. And I know a TKR is out for me right now, I've already resigned myself to that...but I am so ready for a new knee already!!

As far as my CP is concern, I FINALLY got to read my surgery report and the OS said I had a major amount of CP...but never did give it a grade.

At this point I'm really confused at what to do and how to proceed...also factoring into all of this, my husband will be getting a new job in March 2002 so I'm really unsure of have a major operation and having to switch coverage...possiblity of not being covered because of a pre-existing condition? WHO KNOWS! LOL I'm starting to get my sense of humor back about all of this, it's just a day by day thing at this point!

Anyway, thanks for your input, it's greatly appreciated! Take care!

~Abby
Guest guest
Hi! Can certainly sympathize with everyone's confussion and misguided trust in os and how everyone says something else. I went in for a mosaiacplasty yesterday and guess what!? To much damage for it to do any good!! So he did only the arthroscopic exam and removed some loose cartilage. now I go in on Monday am to find out what option B is. I have no idea what will be recommended next. I am most frustrated with the fact that 14 months ago I went to a different os and he told me to go home and loose weight that the pain could not be that bad. Stupid and mad as I was i waited and went back two months ago when he told me my options were to loose weight or nothing I finally went to another os who refered me to the one that did this surgery. Apparently the damage is to the point of little or no cartilage left and the bones have already been affected. Again I am not sure to what extent or exactly what, when your coming out of surgery is a hard time to try to wake up and fully comprehend what they are saying. I will know more monday and for right now I have a very painful swollen knee to take care of so best get to a place where I can elevate it. Blessings to all and hope your day is better than mine! Guest guest
Mike, I'm so sorry to hear that you couldn't have the surgery! I wonder if they can't do the OATS, if they can't do the carticel too? I guess not since there isn't much cartlige left. Do you think maybe now they will suggest a TKR??

I just have to chuckle at the losing weight comment. Even though it may not be a bad idea for alot of reasons, that seems to be all doctor's answers when they either don't want to investigate or they don't know what the problem is! I even got that from a doctor that checked me out for gallbladder disease and he already knew there were no stones! LOL He was just to lazy to order a functional test for me.

Anyway, keep us posted on what the doctor says on Monday! Take care of you knee and kick back and relax!

~Abby
Guest guest
hi Abby,
i think that i understand why your doctor is reluctant to do Tibial TT. i'm also a candidate for it (on both knees) went to several OS, and those who were against it said that it is a very difficult procedure that they prefer to do only in extereme cases.
they cut the tuberosity bone (which is located just below the patella) and move the patella & it's tendon to the middle of the knee and screw it to the bone.
basically, they reconstruct your knee.

i was told i should do it only when i have pain on a daily basis & cannot take it anymore. (in other words, when i start crawling on the ground..).

again, i don't know how bad your cp is,in what pain you are, and i'm not an OS or Theparist, but if i had to choose between a total knee replacement and the TTT - i would go for the TTT. you can always replace your knee, but once you have done that there is no turning back.

i have to say that it does sound odd to me that your OS tells you u'll need a TKR, but refuses to give you TTT which might save you the trouble and pain to replace the knee. i was offered TTT in order to PREVENT patellosectomy, TKR, etc.
did u consult other OS??

there are other measures to help cp such as synvisc injections. i know a person who took them and it really helped her. did your OS offer you these? if you suffer from a constant daily pain maybe you should check about them..

-sigal
Guest guest
No, I don't want to have a TTT unless it is ABSLOUTLY the last thing they can do for me. As far as I'm concerned that isn't even on my agenda at this point in the game. Right now my main problem is this defect and the constant pain. My only options right now are going to probably be either OATS or Carticel or soemthing along those lines. At this point, I don't care as long as it gets rid of the pain. I have tried the synvisc injections, and they may as well have put water in there for all the good it did me. I was really hopeing for better results.

Like I said, after they do the MRI, hopefully the Dr will have a better idea as to what to do. From the x-rays, my alignment isn't bad enough to do the TTT anyway, and because of my age, there is no way any doctor will even think of doing a TKR. So right now, like the dr said, I'm just buying time till I get older and the degeneration and the alignment gets worse. It's a very frustrating situation to be told I will need all of these things and basically just wait till I can hardly walk to do anything about it.

My husband did bring up a point, the dr said they want to find out what exactly caused the defect in the first place (I didn't have any specific accident) and try to treat that along w/the defect. From the way the dr talked, she didn't seem to think the alignment was what caused it. SO...till they get the MRI, I feel like I'm stuck in Lala land wondering what is going to happen next and what my options are going to be. I will get a second (and third and fourth if necessary) opinion after the MRI is done and I see exactly what this Dr. thinks!

Thanks!
~Abby

Guest guest
It does seem that you're on a lot of meds aimed at the same problem. I've got little room to talk but it seems that mine are treaing various symptoms; I don't know. Aren't 3 of yours used for anti-rejection? I take Vit.D w/ calcium (1500 mg./day) and Fosomax for bone density-have osteopenis in my spine & osteoporosis in my hips.Recently fractured a rib while scrubbing the bathroom (just leaning over the toilet seat to reach an area).Have paiin meds for this & also had meds for itching increased as this problem has gotten worse. It'll be winter before we know; so being indoors alot won't bother me as badly. Connie <angel34@...> wrote: I had my 4 month check up with my hept. Dr. Monday. It went well. MY labs are still in the normal range, so I get to decrease the Prednisone to 15mg. For once in a 1 1/2years the Doc was serously wanting to get me off the Prednisone. The Prograff that I am taking is working great, along with the CellCept. I also had to see the bone Dr. my bone dencity test came back great it was .4, so I just have to keep taking my calcium with vit. D and see him again in a year. It is such a long trip to Kansas City. It takes 6 hours to get there. Good thing I have all my labs done back home and then they fax them to Kansas City. I am also used to my small clinic, I get my results with in 20 min. In Kansas City I asked for the results and they told me I have to go through my Dr to get them and then he will send them to me. I guess I am spoiled with our small clinic. Guest guest
I am so tired of the lower back pain that I have had for several years now. At first it was very infrequent, but now it just seems to hurt most of the time. At my last visit my rheumy sent me for ex-rays, which indicated spondylolisthesis, or a slipped vertebra. My next visit to him is not until March, and he has never seemed very concerned about it, anyway. So I googled and found an orthopedic surgeon at a Spine and Scoliosis Center in a nearby city. I called and got an appointment for January 14. I thought that I'd probably have to wait longer, but they apparently save some slots for new patients. I certainly don't want to have surgery, and the website sounded as though they use that as a last resort. I hope that I will get some relief soon. I knew what kind of doctor to look for, as my brother-in-law recently went to an orthopedic surgeon for his back pain, and he got some epidural shots, which have alleviated at least some of his pain. Guest guest
- my Rheumy wasn't concerned with my back pain either (for his treatments). He told me that I need to see an orthopaedic because it is mechanical. But, because I don't have insurance, I can't afford an orthopaedic, so I am stuck with excruciating back pain that is getting worse by the day and neither the Rheumy or my PC are willing to hear what I am trying to tell them. For that I am glad Christmas is over with. Now my goal is to try to get the credit card paid down enough so I can go to an orthopaedic. Sue - I wish you the best of luck with your January appointment. I know how you are feeling. There are times I almost feel the back pain is worse than the RA/FMS.
