Guest guest
We live in Houston Texas. This virus is getting a little to close for me. I wonder if the flu strain is a bad as they are hyping or Mexico is just getting hit so hard with deaths because of the lack of medical care and country sanitation. mom of ,5 CVID > > , > > We live in the Roseville area. Guest guest
, Just saw on the news that the Headmaster at the private school has just reported that one of his students is positive for swine flu the the other 12 students tested negative???? they all have the same symptoms but only one tested positive, actually 2 are positive the other is the boyfriend of the student but he does not attend that school. " > (from: http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/04/28/swine.flu/index.html) +++Hi Racheal. First, your own body creates viruses, bacteria and candida to clean itself up, so it isn't possible to " catch them " from outside sources. People with robust immune systems won't need to create bugs in order to keep healthy, so that statement is totally false. But yes, when the body needs to create viruses or bacteria it results in many healing symptoms, including inflammation which is important for cleaning up the body. Our bodies have reasons for creating any healing symptoms, which is always for health purposes. Guest guest
Hey all. I am not in a swine flu " area " , but I know some of you have concern about our kids getting it. And someone asked what we all thought about it. I have to admit that it is scary to me. My daughter has Hyper Ige syndrome. She is only 22 months, so far, nothing too major has hit her yet. We just got out of a winter filled with lots of ear infections and some bronchiolitis. I have 3 kids in school that could bring lots of things home to her and I run an inhome daycare. So, I do have concerns, but here's the thing---these kids that we have are susceptible to anything. Typically, we don't even know when they have been exposed and we don't know there is anything going around, and bam--they get sick. At least we know that this is going around. We know that if our kids show any kind of symptoms, that we should take them in to be seen. Also, I think it would be good to consult with your child's doctor, and maybe they can make you feel better about it. The way that I am dealing with the scare, so far, is to trust in God. God has watched over my little girl to this point, and I trust He will continue to do so. That's not to say that she can't get this illness---it's just saying that if she does, God knows best, and I trust Him. So, prayerfully, you can all find comort in that. God bless you all. Tell me how a poor immune system is going to do better than a good immune system. The poor immune system will let the disease progress before overcoming the infection (if it ever does), where the healthy immune system will " nip it in the bud " . Guest guest
Hello, I am by no means an expert, but here are my first thoughts about this. We have seen this before. This same strain was in the US in 1976. It was some military units here in the US that had it. One did die, but all the others were OK. The gov't rushed to vaccinate the population, and many got sick from the vaccine. Have you noticed that it hits the people born after 1976 hardest? That being said, it is not a " brand new super bug. Guest guest
DR.FURMAN - THANK YOU - YOU'RE A PRINCE - In a message dated 4/29/2009 9:33:11 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, rrfurman@... writes: Some general information on the Swine Flu:1. The concern over the Swine Flu is not that it is particularly dangerous. The concern relates to the fact that it is sufficiently different from the previous strains that there is no "residual immunity" in the population. The population immunity helps to slow the spread of any virus. Each year, the Centers for Disease Control picks several components to put into the flu vaccine based upon the information available. The vaccines do not offer any protection against the Swine flu because of differences in its composition. Therefore, the concern is not that it is particularly dangerous, but that it will spread more easily.2. CLL patients and other immunosuppressed patients are no more likely to become infected than anyone else. The virus will infect everyone it comes into contact with, regardless of their immune status.3. There is a suggestion that the severity of the infection is related to the healthiness of the immune system and that people with NORMAL immune systems are more likely to have MORE serious infections. This is because the damage caused by the virus is not due to the virus as much as it is due to the immune system attacking the virus.Overall, I believe that it is important to remember that the outbreaks have been identified early and will hopefully be contained. While the chances of getting the virus from daily contact is astronomically small, this is the only means to contract it. While sitting on an airplane might expose you to the virus if someone else on the plane is infected, it is important to remember that the chances are so small that someone infected will be on the plane and that you will get it from the recirculated air. It is not necessary to restrict air travel. Most transfer of the virus is not via airborne transmission, but direct surface to surface. The typically scenario would be wiping one's nose after shaking hands with someone infected who had rubbed their nose.I do believe (because I am young and ideological) that it is important to not panic and reserve the Tamiflu for those who definitely need it. At this point in time, I encourage everyone to continue leading their lives without concern for the flu. The only thing I do recommend is good hand washing, avoid direct contact with possible contaminated surfaces (sharing cell phones, etc.), eating healthy, stop smoking, etc.I hope this helps.Rick Furman, MD>> First, my deepest sympathies to on the loss of his father to CLL. > > I am scheduled to fly on Sat. out to New Mexico for a brief stay and then on to Tucson. There is business I need to take care of and visit my elderly parents as well. I am a bit nervous given this swine flu outbreak. I was unsuccessful in getting a prescription for tamiflu to carry with me or getting tamiflu. When I called my local Onc's office they said the state health dept (VT) was advising not to give out tamiflu unless the pt. is examined and has a confirmed case of swine flu. Guest guest
Hi Russ, Since Mexico and New Mexico USA are sometimes confused, I just wanted to reassure you that there have been no reported incidents of swine flu in New Mexico at this time. However, being a border state, our state health dept. does anticipate that we may be seeing cases of swine flu. I would imagine this to be true of other border states as well. Guest guest
Some general information on the Swine Flu: 1. The concern over the Swine Flu is not that it is particularly dangerous. The concern relates to the fact that it is sufficiently different from the previous strains that there is no " residual immunity " in the population. The population immunity helps to slow the spread of any virus. Each year, the Centers for Disease Control picks several components to put into the flu vaccine based upon the information available. The vaccines do not offer any protection against the Swine flu because of differences in its composition. Therefore, the concern is not that it is particularly dangerous, but that it will spread more easily. 2. CLL patients and other immunosuppressed patients are no more likely to become infected than anyone else. The virus will infect everyone it comes into contact with, regardless of their immune status. 3. There is a suggestion that the severity of the infection is related to the healthiness of the immune system and that people with NORMAL immune systems are more likely to have MORE serious infections. This is because the damage caused by the virus is not due to the virus as much as it is due to the immune system attacking the virus. Overall, I believe that it is important to remember that the outbreaks have been identified early and will hopefully be contained. The typically scenario would be wiping one's nose after shaking hands with someone infected who had rubbed their nose. I do believe (because I am young and ideological) that it is important to not panic and reserve the Tamiflu for those who definitely need it. At this point in time, I encourage everyone to continue leading their lives without concern for the flu. The only thing I do recommend is good hand washing, avoid direct contact with possible contaminated surfaces (sharing cell phones, etc.), eating healthy, stop smoking, etc. I hope this helps. Apparently, there is a shortage of tamiflu and relenza etc. Or not enough to go around should this flu become really widespread. Guest guest
Friends, In the 1918 Flu pandemic, the cohort with the highest mortality rate was 20-40 years olds. The theory was that the reaction of their powerful immune systems was the cause of the lung failure. Also in 1918, the first wave of flu was quite mild, but the second, that wave, that was the killer. Hand washing, and maybe N-95 masks in crowds. Be well

Guest guest
I feel like I have to say something for the sake of us all. I have a suggestion around the Swine Flu updates, Maps , research from now on. Our greatest enemy is stress. Being aware of your world and having too much of it in your life can bring on stress even if you are not aware of it. This errodes your immune system. My request is that we stop discussing it so much. There is nothing, absolutely nothing anyone can do about it. If you are going to catch it, you are going to catch it. There is a very good saying that I think applies here. " Worry is interest paid on something that has not even happened yet." So concentrate more on distracting your minds, laugh more, get more sun, eat really, really well, love well, get enough sleep and chant the above saying while you meditate and pray. Got to go ride the babies. Hugs to all, Sue
Guest guest
Sue, Well said. The media is having a grand time with this, feeding the frenzy that is the result. It is best for us if we stay away from it. Pam Re: Swine flu I feel like I have to say something for the sake of us all. I have a suggestion around the Swine Flu updates, Maps , research from now on.
