Guest guest
- > > Amy and Lucy, > Hello! You can try giving your daughter Benadryl about 45min to one hour before the MXT. This took away almost all of my symptoms. Before I took the Bendadyl I felt like I had the stomach flu every week. I was ready to tell the Dr I had enough and then someone on another board suggested I try the Benadryl it worked great. I have since switched the the injectable form and I have no problems. Guest guest
Amy & Lucy - Yes I would definately let the rheumy know. Grant experienced nausea too and I was very hesitant to call the rheumy but I finally got sick of him feeling so bad and called. The rheumy took the call very seriously and wanted to try some different things. Is lucy also taking folic acid? If not that will definately help the nausea. Grant took 3 mg/day for a while. I have also heard about the benedryl from the PsA group I'm in. I've never heard anyone talk about here though until now. I would ask the rheumy about that. In fact I think I will ask our rheumy too at our next appt. Hope you can get the nausea to subside! & Grant (11, PsA/Uveitis) > > Lucy started mtx injections 10 days ago. Guest guest
Hi Amy, Neat info about Benadryl,it's the first I have heard about it and we have been dealing withArthur and MTX since July 2001.My son got a bit grean in the face the first and second dose but then did great. No side effects at all from the shots. His biggest problem was the awful, yellow color. Now several years later and in medicated remission he was switched to pills. For a long time he was fine, then the day before his rheumy apointment he anounced that the pills were making him sick and sometimes he threw up the pills and asked to be put back on the dreaded, yellow shot.Luckily when they prescribed the syringes they wrote them for a little, ity bitty short needle, not the 27 gaugue 1/2 " that he used to do and what is the smallest, mandatory size for his Enbrel. He almost fell to the floor laughing at the small size of the needle. We have used Emla for years but sometimes he doesn't want it for the MTX. As someone mentioned the folic acid its usualy just a 1mg pill every day, some docs say not the day of the shot. You can increase the amount to I think 5mg a day but mayby not for someone so young.Dr.Lehman has a book called It's Not Just Growing Pains and he says the nausea is not coming from the stomache itself.I know confusing and he doesn't elaborate much. I hope you can help your little one get the great benefits that MTX has to offer without the side effects. It's so frustrating - the mtx is helping her joints but now she feels miserable from the side effects. She doesn't see the rheumy until Feb. 23. I don't know whether to call him or not. Guest guest
My daughter has been on MTX injections for over 3 years now. At first she has major issues with the vomiting, they seemed to have gone away after a few months being on it, and they have come back. She throws up right after the shot, and maybe once after that. You may want to see if there is something else they can give him. > > > Lucy started mtx injections 10 days ago. Guest guest
The rheumy wants to take Lucy off of mtx. She's supposed to start Enbrel tomorrow, but we have to wait for the insurance to approve it and then the pharmacy to order it. Neither of those things happened today, so she won't be starting Enbrel until next week. I'm hopeful though. Guest guest
Hmmm I wonder if the methotrexate is causing my gyn problems. I have a solid type cyst on my left ovary? Anyone else on this topic? My rheumy never mentioned any of this Jolene
Guest guest
Patty B I also had a bad reaction to MTX and Enbrel. Used MTX for about 6 yrs. then it started to bother my kidneys. Dr. said that's not possible -- I told him I'm not taking it any longer. Enbrel -- I had 3 injections before a big flare up or rash from head to toe. I haven't tried anything else so far. Guest guest
Yes, I had tongue sores when I took it. It wasn't much of a problem when I took only the MTX and no biologics, but in combination with Enbrel, Humira, Remicade, or my current [and last chance that they can offer just now] I couldn't also take the MTX. The others all controlled my psoriasis plaques, but the one I " m currently taking is not controlling the plaques. I didn't give the name simply because mental mud just took it out of my mind...It will come to me too late to reply. " salo99@... Guest guest
Were you taking folic acid with MTX? The folic acid should eliminate the mouth sores. Patty
Guest guest
Hi Jolene, <<Hmmm I wonder if the methotrexate is causing my gyn problems. I have a solid type cyst on my left ovary?>> It would be a good idea to have it checked out. <<Anyone else on this topic? My rheumy never mentioned any of this>> I think that's what upset me the most -- they didn't go over some of the negative side effects. In fact, no one even instructed me on how to give myself the instructions. I got them ON THE PHONE from the nurse with Enbrel! They were always very helpful with ANY questions. You might even call them to ask about your problems. I hope you don't delay seeing a gynecologist or at least your primary care doctor to relieve your mind one way or the other. Patty B. Guest guest
Hi Patty, > Were you taking folic acid with MTX? The folic acid should > eliminate the mouth sores. Yes, I was taking Folic Acid every day but the rheumy didn't want me to take more than 2 tabs. (I mentioned that I'd read where others took as many as 5.); she was adamant about that saying she was going by the levels reported in my blood work. The Staph in my nose was the normal staph found in everybody. I suspect my immune system had been lowered too much and it became an opportunistic infection. We have to stop Enbrel during any infection and I just never started it again. I was too SCARED! of all of it by then. Patty B.
Guest guest
Hi SD, > Enbrel -- I had 3 injections before a big flare up or rash from head > to toe. I'm surprised about your skin's reaction to beginning Enbrel. My skin cleared up completely (although there were only a few patches mostly my elbows to begin with). About 9 months after stopping the MTX & Enbrel, my skin really breaking out -- worse in years. I'm not sure if it's a reaction to stopping those medications because they DO say it can but it seems like a very delayed reaction to me. Dunno .... Patty B. Guest guest
Patty B The rash I had from taking Enbrel was an allergic reaction not psoriasis. And after about a year off of Enbrel and MTX my psoriasis also got much worse. I believe the MTX does a lot to help with our rash and maybe it takes a lot time to get these meds out of our system. I'm really not sure what to try next????? SD
Guest guest
Hi Jolene, <<Oh I've seen the gyn I have surgery scheduled on February 18>> I'm sorry that surgery is needed rather a more conservative treatment. Do you mind sharing his opinion about whether the cause is related to MTX or what the diagnosis is? Please do take good care of yourself, Patty B. Guest guest
Yes I have to have the surgery the cyst I have on my ovary is solid and that s what concerns them. If it hadn't of grown they would just leave it but it is. So they are taking the tube, the ovary and of course the cyst. I do have one on the other side its just small not sure if they are taking that or not. I have not talked to my rheumatologist about this as of yet. I am now on now methotrexate starting this week and two weeks after surgery so not sure what is going to happen. I will ask my gyn about the methotrexate causing this. To be honest I never had any problems woman wise with cycles till I started the methotrexate. Strange isn't it. Its going to be interesting to see how I am without the methotrexate. I also have complex regional pain syndrome which complicates that too. When I get an answer ill post it to the group. Jolene
Guest guest
I take 8 MTX per week and have had no side effects at all. I take it at night just before I go to bed. Joan in Fair Oaks
