Guest guest
I'd rather see those darn commercials than hear my own mother (80 yrs old) say, " Boy, your uncle really sufered with RA! I'm so glad you girls didn't get that! " (It's a miracle she still is alive after that one Or better yet, I have to drive 4 hours to see either of my grandchildren and after a trip like that I'm bedridden for 3-4 days. When I told my mother that she said, " Oh Honey, why is that? " (Yes, she is still alive, but at this point she may not make her 81st birthday!) Needless to say, I screamed " Because I'm F-----G sick! " The problem is that if you " look well " and people see you on a " good day " , they don't get how much you really suffer. My husband has stage-4 liver disease from a horrible blood disease and he goes crazy when people tell him, " Well, you LOOK healthy! " I have gotten to the point where I no longer say I have RA. I tell them I have an auto immune disease in addition to my spine falling apart. Since most people haven't a clue what an auto immune disease is, IF they ask I normally say that it is a disease similar to Lupus. (Which it is.) That is normally enough for them, unless they are really knowledgeable in the field of medicine. Also, since MTX is a form of chemo, I tell them that I'm taking steroids and a form of chemo. By that time I've gone way over their head and they don't question me anymore. Mostly when I see those tv commercials on tv, I laugh because as soon as the woman says she's feeling great the voice comes on and explains that it may help you but it can also screw your body up so bad you will wish your were dead! I especially love the Lyrica ad because that drug screwed my stomach up so bad that I don't want it within a 5 mile radius of my home! If those get you upset, my mail order pharmacy just sent me RX drugs for Osteoporosis!!!! I don't have Osteoporosis!!!! It was a mistake and last Monday the pharmacy said everything had been cleared up and all corrected. Then on Tuesday they mailed it out to me. Yeppers! Everything was all straightened up alright!!!! I told the pharmacy that the next time they want to screw up a Rx make sure they send me some good stuff that will make me happy and not this stupid Osteoporosis crap! LOL!!! Hugs to all, Judy land > > > > Boy, I sure agree with the both of you! One type of arthritis, and > > just > > take a OTC pill, and you will be fine. Right!! If only it were that > > simple!!!!! Guest guest
i'm so with you on the stupid commercials and clueless family members. i'm one of the ones Lyrica has helped. But the Lyrica commercial where the woman says, " but I'm not going to take this lying down " or something- her tone insinuates FMS patients just lie down and let it take us over...that one pisses me off. Not to mention the enbrel commercials that make it look like you do one injection and immediately life is like an MGM musical, you're all dancing, and flowers bloom, and rainbows come out, and music comes out of the sugar bowl on your countertop.....yeah. obviously these actors do NOT have an autoimmune disease. they're great meds but let's have a little reality check here. > > > > > > Boy, I sure agree with the both of you! Guest guest
Judy and et al: Oh, I hear ya. I don't really have the time to waste in jail for assault, although I've considered it, when people say, " well, you don't LOOK sick " . Depending on who has uttered this stupidity...well, my preferred response is, " hmmm. Yeah. Well, you LOOK smart. Good cover. " Sometimes they get it and sometimes they don't. Othertimes I ask them, " Are you always this shallow (or thoughtless, uneducated, or simply stupid) or do you have to work on it? " Sarcasm is my favorite sharpened weapon against the many witless wonders. I have gotten quite nasty with my mom, too. Mom reminds me of her 'arthritis' in her hand. Whooppee for her but she tells me mine will get better if I'd just get up and move more. This disease is the only reason I ever give my mother sass. Mom-in-law gets it too when she tells me I'm lazy. My mom-in-law tells me, " start taking (insert commercial-drug name here) and you'll be fine. Get over this and move on. " I may well slap her really hard someday with a flyswatter. When I DO tell someone what I have I now refer to it as Rheumatoid Disease. If they want more info I tell them it is an auto-immune disease and to go look it up on the internet as I'm not a Dr. I got SO sick and tired of telling mom WHY I can't to this or that anymore. Finally printed off everything I could find plus the Spoon Theory and gave it to her. I just don't want to talk to her about it anymore. Dad & Mom have read it and kinda get it. (Probably only till they forget again and I have to send it to them again) Oh, sorry, there goes that sarcasm again. Dalanne
Guest guest
Have you ever wished that you could let them feel what you feel, for maybe five minutes? I wouldn't wish this on anyone else for longer than that. Another thing I don't understand is why people feel free to comment/insult/pontificate on our disease. They would never do that to a cancer patient, or a Parkinsons patient. Couldn't you just SHAKE them sometimes. I have a sister-in-law that tells me all about her friend that has FMS and how awful it is, and I'm thinking, " hello, i was diagnosed almost 20 years ago...and that was before they found the RA and antiphospholipid antibody syndrome and the Raynauds, and degenerative disc disease, and the spinal surgeries..... " yeah. and the brother that calls at 8:00 in the evening and wants to know why I'm lying down. after working all day, then cooking and cleaning. gaaahhhh..... > > Judy and et al: > > Oh, I hear ya.
