SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY

If he lives in a facility that is paid for by Medicaid, all he will receive will

be the $30 - regardless of any increase in his Social Security benefit. This is

true for Illinois but not many other states.

This has me thinking. I'll be contacting SSA, but somebody here might know

faster.

My hubby will be turning 61 in a couple weeks. He's been retired for the last 4

yrs, but will start collecting SS next Nov. gets $30 of his SSI; the rest

goes to the facility. If I decide to go with SSDI for him, would he be able to

get anything more than the $30 or would it still all go to the facility?

Liz

(btw-he got his new cane. It has a different tip than what he's used to, but I

think it'll be safer.

To be able to receive SSDI, you need to qualify for one of the following

popluations below:

- QUALIFY on your own work record.

     - FICA quarters " purchase " SSDI.

     - If you have earned enough FICA work quarters, you can qualify to get

SSDI on your own work record

- QUALIFY on a parents' work record

      - You are receiving SSI   AND

      - SSI deemed your onset date as before age 22  AND

      - One of your parent's has a FICA work record

     AND that parent either:

        - retires and is collecting Social Security for themself

        or

        - becomes disabled themself and is collecting SSDI for themself

       or

         - dies

I believe a person has two ways to qualify:

Retired parent on Social Security or disabled parent on SSDI

Disabled individual with enough credits from paying into social security to

qualify.

I am confused about the criteria for applying for SSDI.

Do the parents have to be retired?

Does the young adult have to be employed?

Thanks!

If residing in a CILA (goup home) the amount is $50. Again, as Sherri stated,

current rule is that the amount retained ($30 or $50) doesn't increase,

regardless of any increase in social security.

Sherie, whenever we answer one question, we often find other questions. In

this responce uyou say the $30 is the way it is in Illinois, but not

manyother states. Does that mean other states let consumers have more or

less of the money? Cindi

Be sure the $30 gets spent!

Remember, $2,000 max before benefits are reduced

plus any $$$ left in the account at the facility goes directly to State of

Other states let the individual get more money - when the cost of living

increases the benefit. Don't we just love Illinois?!?!?!

I was afraid, pretty sure that was gong to be the answer. All this is not

new...this is an iceberg hitting us that has been building for years. Every

where we turn the system is set against, prejudiced, against people with

disabilities. This state is morally bankrupt.

Thanks for the answer about the $30. NOT that I LIKE it.....(I figured that

that's all he'd be able to get.) As rep. payee for my son, I had a little

difficulty doing the paperwork.... I'm on my son's bank acct, though none of my

money goes into his acct. BUT, when he runs out of money, & he needs (or wants)

something, it comes out of my hubby's & my acct. So we actually spent MORE than

the whooping $360 he gets)....I laughed at the part about the " any money saved "

part.....THAT'S A JOKE...(okay, I really cried) He actually HAD money he could

SAVE when he lived at home.

I agreed.

Job coach service stink here, not very helpful and will lied to get people to

continue to stay on to collect more money.

You guys can do all the legal action against it too. I feel that company should

be honest and work for our tax dollars.
