Guest guest
Hello to everyone. I have a couple of questions: I saw my rheumatologist last week and he said he was going to do a B27 (or maybe B29?) test on my blood which would prove if I had inherited RA. I've never heard of this before and wondered if anyone on the list knows anything? Also, my periods have completely stopped since before Christmas. I'm on MTX, sulfasalazine, folic acid, fentanyl patches and diclofenac. I found my periods haven't been as heavy last year and I put this down to being on MTX. Could be the menopause I suppose (I'm 47) but thought you got more irregularities rather than a sudden stop of periods. Has anyone experienced this? I mentioned it to the nurse at my doctors today as I was in for my monthly blood test and she recommended I see one of the doctors next week. Hope everyone is having a good day, Elaine in the UK

Guest guest
Dear Everyone Thank you so much for the articles. I've now received a copy of the letter sent to my doctor from the rheumatologist. Re: B27, he says 'This is relatively academic, but I think would help her to understand the diagnosis somewhat better.' Huh??? He also says that I'm only to take folic acid after methotrexate and not before. From reading the list emails, I thought the strategy was to take before and after to minimise side effects? He says that there is evidence that predosing reduces efficacy of methotrexate - I wondered if anyone else just takes folic acid after? Guest guest
Elaine, I don't know about others, but I've been on MTX and Folic Acid for almost 20 years and have never failed or was instructed to not take Folic Acid at any time. The only time I made a change was when my MTX was increased and wasn't told to up the Folic Acid. I increased it after learning on this board and have no real problems today. Guest guest
Hi Dennis, I took MXT for 6 years and was always told never to take the folic acid with the MXT always the day or next day after. Apparently it interferes with the efficiency of the drug. Guest guest
You're welcome, Elaine. You'll have to ask your rheumatologist if he thinks you have a form of spondyloarthritis instead of RA. There is no consensus about how much folic acid to take and when to take it. Some advise taking it every single day, others say every day but MTX day, still others advise one time a week after MTX. Some prescribe folinic acid instead of folic acid. It's your rheumatologist's call. Guest guest
Hi Barbara, Dennis, Jolene, and , Thanks very much to all of you for your input. What is worrying me is that as the folic acid helps with MTX side effects (I've been really lucky so far and had few problems taking it) if I take the MTX without the folic acid first, will I now get the horrible side effects? Suppose the only way to find out is to try; I'm just being a big baby about it! Guest guest
Hello Thanks for your help. To be honest, I think he hasn't a clue what is wrong with me - this was the first time I met him and his diagnosis is that I am 'an enigma'. I'm just pleased (in a warped way) that I have raised ESR and CRP - so at least it's not in my imagination. Best wishes Elaine Re: [ ] A couple of questions! You're welcome, Elaine. Guest guest
Hi Elaine, I was on MXT 22.5mg taken 1 day a week for 6 years. I used to dread taking it as I had severe nausea for the day. It also gave me gum abcesses. I was told the folic acid had to be taken the next day as MXT depletes folic acid in your body. Wasn't told it was to help with side effects. All you can do is try it and see if it works for you. It was year 11 before I got a Biologic (Humira) which didn't work and now in year 12 have just started Enbrel. Â Where are you in the UK, I'm in Wirral. Guest guest
The doctor should not have told you that you were going to feel really bad. The power of suggestion can be very strong. When I took MTX, I just felt normal, not bad at all. Try visualizing yourself taking it and feeling wonderful. The Folic acid I was to take 2 tabs with the MTX and two more on Tues followed by one each day thereafter. I got along just fine until it all quit working. He has since put me on Arava. I think your strategy is much better Best wishes Elaine Re: [ ] Re: A couple of questions! The doctor should not have told you that you were going to feel really bad. The power of suggestion can be very strong. When I took MTX, I just felt normal, not bad at all. Try visualizing yourself taking it and feeling wonderful.
