Guest guest
Hi, I am wondering if anyone has had herniated discs in their neck.I do and yesterday was so painful! It was the worst pain I had in my neck.I called my neurologist and he was leaving town and said if the pain got unbearable, go to the ER.I am feeling alittle better today, but if it continues tomorrow, I might head on over to the ER.I feel so weird going there cause some people wouldnt consider this an emergency, but i am only doing what my doc says.My herniation has gotten larger and more to the right with nerve enroachment(whatever that means, I assume its hitting the nerve). He mentioned to me pain management and also he wants me to see a neurosurgeon.Does the neurosurgeon do the pain management also or just surgery? If anyone has any answers for me I would appreciate it.I am also dealing with tenosynovitis in my wrist and have been out of work for the last week.I go back on Sunday and I hope my neck feels better by then.It seems like when one thing happens, the crap hits the fan!Thank you in advance for any answers you might have. Guest guest
It can certainly be considered for the ER. I had trouble when a chiropractor popped my neck before I could stop him. He knew of my condition but was doing his 'regular' treatment of a generic patient. I finally ended up at a pain management clinic because I couldn't turn my neck and treatments we tried wasn't working. It took a couple of months and some MRI's to identify the problem, a collapsed disc and bone spurs pinching my nerves. I had a series of steroid shots and then an epidural before it went away. That was 10 years ago, and since then all I had to do was a cervical traction treatment occasionally at the house. I know it can be really painful and seems forever before it becomes manageable. If you wish, get an over-the-door cervical collar that fits on your chin and the back of your head and is filled with water to adjust the pull. I would use about 12 pounds and sit there for about 20 minutes at a time. It really felt good. It beats surgery! Guest guest
Heidi, Yes, the pain from cervical Disc Disease is cause for going to the ER. The nerve encroachment maybe when the nerves coming out of the spinal column are pinched by bone spurs growing at the exits from the spinal. When that happens you will get 'referred pain', that is pain down your arm or leg. I too have had spinal cortisone shots to try and get the swelling down. I tried chiropractic, Phys, therapy, and massage. Last December I had disc fusion, and he cleaned out all the bone spurs I have in the C4-5,5-6 area. The difference is night and day from what I was experiencing in pain. Have you had x-rays taken lately? or an MRI? > > It can certainly be considered for the ER.
