Guest guest
Vitamin C Associated with Reduced Gout Risk in Men By Gever, Senior Editor, MedPage Today Published: March 09, 2009 Reviewed by Zalman S. Agus, MD BOSTON, March 9 -- It may not prevent the common cold, but vitamin C does appear to be associated with a lower risk of gout, researchers here said. Action Points Men in the large Health Professionals Follow-Up Study who took vitamin C supplements showed a reduction of up to 45% in the adjusted risk of developing gout, reported Hyon Choi, M.D., Dr.P.H., of Brigham & Women's Hospital, and colleagues in the March 9 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine. With vitamin C supplements of 1,000 to 1,499 mg/day, the relative risk of developing gout was 0.66 (95% CI 0.49 to 0.88) compared with participants not taking supplements, the researchers found. Daily supplements of 1,500 mg or more were associated with a relative risk of 0.55 (95% CI 0.36 to 0.86, P<0.001 for trend), after adjusting for age, dietary composition including coffee and alcohol intake, body mass index, and health history. *********************************** Read the whole article here: http://www.medpagetoday.com/Geriatrics/Arthritis/13189 Not an MD
