Guest guest
Hello everyone, Still trying to catch up on the e-mail. I also had leg cramps with Graves and I was working out side in the 90 degree summer. I would wake up in the middle of the night and would have to get my girl friend to pull my legs straight because I was in to much pain to do it myself. So I started eating two bananas before bed time and this stopped the cramps completely. Potassium helps cramps. Guest guest
Thanks for this tip, Raven. I also have had cramps and it was painful. The muscles twitch a bit too. teresa Re: Leg cramps Hello everyone, Still trying to catch up on the e-mail. I also had leg cramps with Graves and I was working out side in the 90 degree summer. LOL LOL LOL > Connie, MI > Connie- I swear thats what the doc did when I was younger! I have always wondered why my parents didnt question it but guess they had the " the doctor always knows best " mentality. I know I would get up and walk out if my doctor were to suggest that for Ang. Maybe my tonsils were connected to my knees.LOL One thing I do know is that the leg pain didnt get better until I got older(done growing) so I had my tonsils out for nothing. When I asked her why she never questioned him she said that every kid got their tonsils out back then and she thought it must have been true and he was the doctor not her. Like I said she used to suffer from the " Doctors know all and never question them " mentality. I have since given her an education and now she questions everything or calls me to ask my opinion and then follows up with a list of questions. At least it was only my tonsils! Guest guest
, this will be quick for now as I have 3 granddaughters waiting for us to take them to a Xmas party. But extra calcium will help ease the cramps once your body gets what it needs and also when the cramp is happening if you rub that part of your leg with ice it will take it away. If it is low in the leg or in your foot I would stand on the ice. I used to keep an old soap bottle with water in it and freeze it so I could get it quick to stand on or rub. If your cramps are like mine, the shock of the ice won't even bother you because it will bring the relief. Hope this helps. Guest guest
, When my daughter was very young she had very bad cramps in her legs. The doctor said she needed extra calcium and because she would later be having periods he suggested she take it along with magnesium so that she would not be troubled with menstrual cramps at a later age. The extra calcium and magnesium worked wonders for her. Maybe it will for you also. Then I would strongly suggest that you buy a paperback book called PROTEIN POWER by Eades and Eades. Get yourself on this low carbohydrate diet. It will greatly relieve the problems of diabetes and maybe save you from heart trouble and leg amputation down the road. It will also start to relieve the circulation problem gradually. The book is only about $7 and could save your life. My endocrinologist recommends this type of diet for all diabetics. Once you get the hang of it, it is easy to do and you lose weight and don't feel hungry. Best wishes, a Carnes
Guest guest
Also, if you take a calcium supplement be sure to not take it the same time you take your multivitamin with iron. The iron prohibits the absorption of the calcium. Take them at different times of the day. ~Laury
Guest guest
Hi I had been having a lot of leg cramps and was to my PCP doctor twice and I talked with my cardiologist's nurse twice on the phone about it. He tried anti inflamitory meds and that didn't work. They took blood work to see if it was the lipitor causing muscle breakdown. Nothing showed up. So he finally took me off lipitor and put me on something else and my legs are getting better. I hope that doesn't come back again. It was miserable and hard to walk. Have any of you ever had trouble with leg cramps? If so, what did they say it was? I had to go back on lasix also. Ruth in PA
Guest guest
Ruth, As I understand it, Lipitor can cause cramping... it's one of the listed possible side effects... also, Lasix can deplete your system of potassium causing leg/muscle cramps... a banana a day often helps w/this ... I've also heard of persons drinking quine water... but I think one has to be careful w/that... I'd ask my dr first, then if he/she approves give it a try... FYI, here's a site on potassium http://www.vitaminsplus.com/vplus/potassium.htm ... remember, it's best to discuss all info w/your healthcare provider prior to following any advice found on this or any other board. Good luck, 'hope you're feeling better soon... JES in NJ, USA God created your face... Guest guest
Jes in NJ Thanks for the info. I think it's strange that the doctor waited so long before changing my lipitor if they know it causes leg cramps. He told me to eat bananas and I think I heard somewhere that cantaloupe has potassium too. Do you know if that's right? What is quine water? I never heard of it. Where are you in NJ? I have a cousin who lives in Bridgewater and she has a defib. She's the one who told me about this list but I don't believe she is on it. She's a teacher, has 2 children and is just too busy to be on the computer much. I'm going to have to write her and tell her how much this group of people here can help you out with information and support. It's great. Guest guest
Ruth... downside of not having spell check on msg boards... I meant quinine/tonic water... some say they get relief from leg cramps if they drink it... but you must watch if you have other health issues. JES... BTW... Guest guest
Ruth: I have had a similar problem, and I think that most of your problem comes, not from the Lipitor, but from the Lasix. As a diuretic, Lasix causes your body to shed excess fluid, but it also eliminates potassium and Magnesium. My doctor put me on Potassium and Magnesium supplements, and the cramps are gone. I am still taking Lipitor (my cholesterol is 188) and Lasix. In addition, sleeping with your legs directly under a ceiling fan, etc. can cause cramps. Good luck - those cramps can be miserable. -- Mike Nolan Webmaster, Good Deale Bluegrass Shoppe " Dealing in all things Bluegrass " http://www.gooddealebluegrass.com
Guest guest
Mike - agree with you -- I was allergic to the lasix, so I couldn't use it long, I am on Edecrin, and I also take magnesium and postassium supplements, and have never had the leg cramping.... Ruth - hope that info helps. ~guin Mike Nolan wrote: > Ruth: > I have had a similar problem, and I think that most of your problem > comes, not from the Lipitor, but from the Lasix. Guest guest
Mike, I had been off lasix for a year and just had to go back on it because I started having problems with fluid again. The said the blood worked showed that my potassium was ok but didn't mention magnesium. I do sleep with a fan on in my room because it is easier to breathe but I don't have it directly on my legs. Do you think that could still be it? The cramps do seem better since I'm not taking lipitor but not sure yet because it comes and goes and you are right, those cramps can be miserable. I get so tired of hurting all the time. Thanks for the info. Ruth in PA
Guest guest
Jes in NJ I still don't know what the quinine/water tonic is. Can you help me out? Guest guest
You should be able to find it in grocery store in the soda isle... I can't explain it other than it's tonic water... it contains quinine ... but I would definetly ask doc before taking it... especially in large doses. > Jes in NJ > > I still don't know what the quinine/water tonic is. Guest guest
In my experience magnesium is the most necessary nutrients for cramps. Calcium is needed but magnesium is more necessary. Most people don't need more salt. A rare few do need salt. Water is important but you can drink too much. Average need is half your body weight in ounces, more if losing lots of fluid (sweat, dry air). Guest guest
, what is the difference between organic salt & sodium chloride as mentioned below? I'm sure most people know, but I don't. Personally, I don't eat much salt, and when I do, it's the normal table variety, which I presume is SC. Would that cause problems, and what type? Thanks PS. where do u get all your info from? >From: " Dekany " <info@...> >Reply- >< > >Subject: RE: leg cramps >Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2001 09:18:05 -0400 > > >>>>>>Most people don't need more salt.<<< - sorry Kathy, but most people >do need organic salt. Guest guest
SC is a man made refined chemical, that will cause water retention/high blood pressure etc.... Organic sodium contains many necessary nutrients(minerals) that are needed by the body to regulate important functions. etc...
