Hey girl,

I too am on prednisone but also methotrexate. My rheumy wanted to give the MTX

a chance to work. My pain came back after a week or two at 5mg as

well and today I went back up to ten and still hurt, had to take

Advil, and just sweated like I cannot even tell you.

I wish I could give you some semblance of advice. I see my R on

Tuesday of next week. The one thing prednisone has done for me is allow me

to read again because my iritis was so bad I could not read a chapter

book for years. Anyone else have that problem?

(who also does not want to be on pred!)

I guess I should have clarified - I entered two posts today. :)

I am on a DMARD - I started with the standard MTX treatment, and

maintained well at 20mg/wk oral, but after a few months the MTX caused

medication-induced hepatitis and I had to discontinue it. Right now,

I'm on 2 grams/day of sulfasalazine. I also take Lodine as an

anti-inflammatory. I just can't seem to get off the prednisone no matter

what I do, and after a long car trip home after visiting family over

the weekend, I managed to forget my dose of prednisone last night,

which made today much much worse, and I could hardly move.

I'm looking for any suggestions from those who managed to successfully

wean off prednisone.

Thanks!

Hi :

I have taken prednisone the majority of the last two years.  I have autoimmune

hearing loss and when my hearing drops, the only thing that brings the hearing

back is high doses of prednisone (60 mg).  Besides my hearing, the prednisone

has also helped with my pain  and inflammation.  I to like you, went through the

cycle of returned symptoms when I was taking below 40 mg.  After taking the

extreme high doses prednisone much longer than I should have, I finally decided

that I had to stop taking the steroids.  When I initially stopped, I felt as if

I had a bad case of the flu for about three weeks.  In addition to the extreme

fatigue, I felt as if I could actually feel every muscle and joint in my body,

because they all hurt.  My rheumy told me that is a normal response after taking

the steroids for so long.  Sorry to say that I am again taking 10 mg of

prednisone for my psoriatic arthritis symptoms.  I plan on never taking the high

doses again.

Have you tried any other medications to help with your symptoms (Humira, Enbrel,

MTX, etc.)?  If not, I would certainly talk with my doctor about available

options.

Take care,

I call prednisone " the band aid drug " . You can take it for so long

then when you quit BOOM everything is back! I feel great when I took

10mg a day but my body would gain weight and I would look like a big

round ball. ARGH!

See if your doc will put you on MTX, Enbrel, or Humira. I am on MTX

have taken my third dose last Friday. I am having a few side effects

that seem to get better each week (the side effects last about 48 hrs

after taking it). Some people have no side effects. But I think I

am starting to see improvement. It takes several weeks I am told to

see improvement. However, I am losing the weight I gained on

prednisone. YEAH!

Talk to your doc about another option.

Wishing you well..

I dont know much about prednisone other than you have to wean

yourself off slowly but why are you supposed to go up to 4.5mg this

weekend? Lots of people stay at 3mg so you are getting plenty of it

and there is no set time to go up to a higher dose. I`m sure others

that take prednisone will offer an opinion. Maybe wean yourself

slowly off the pred and then go up to 4.5mg?

Good luck.

i would say that up to 10 mg prednisone it is ok.my wife uses ldn for

years now with 7.5 mg prednsone for her adrenal and there are very

good results with ldn.

My doctor had written the prescription out for 1.5 mg increase every 3 weeks until i reached 4.5mg. I can still tell i have inflammation. I started taking LDN Aug 9. At this point, I am taking 3 mg. I am still hurting with taking 3 mg. I have Wegeners granulomatosis. I am having sinus problems and lungs problems. Right now my lungs are still bothering me at 3 mg of LDN. I was taking Imuran but that has been discontinued as well. When i first started taking LDN i saw results but now it seems like it is not working. I hope that I am not one of the one's that LDN does not work for.

a, you're allowed to use LDN and pred at the same time, take pred in the morning and ldn around 10 pm. Prednisone will not suppress the immune system when it's such a small dose as 10 mg. LDN and prednisone at 10 mg works fine with me. Ingrid

If you do this too often it can shut down your ACTH levels and you can end up

with 's/Adrenal Insufficiency.

one mg of Prednisone is = to 4mgs of Hydrocortisone

in time it can do in your liver so if you need this everyday try Hydrocortisone

or Medrol.

I had a head injury and they needed to put me on this pack with 3 refills when I

was done with it they could not take me off it my Adrenals Quit making Cortisol

and I end up in the ER but the Dr. told me this could happen. I was in the

hosp. 2 weeks they gave me Hydrocortisone then started to very slowly take me

off it.

Can't answer how it would affect TRT but you better watch out for it big time.

Unless it is a matter of keeping yourself alive you don't want to take it long

term. It was what precipitated my step-fathers death in a nutshell, and he was a

retired physician himself.

Too long of a story to relate here.

Hi,

actually it's a " medrol dose pack " that starts me off at a high dose and works

me down over a week.

and yea it's to keep me breathing short term.

It is a steroid, but it is not anabolic like testosterone. I took it because I

had no choice, my gout would not go away. Its important to note that my gout

was caused by one of my high blood pressure meds.

The prednisone worked, it got my joint to stop being inflamed, but I paid a

price, I was already pre-diabetic and it shifted my blood sugar levels into

diabetic readings. This continued after I stopped it, and then my already low

but untested testosterone went lower afterwards.

My point is, if you have to use it, its effective. If there is anything else

that you haven't tried, try that first if you can.

I would say getting everything tested after the prednisone would be a good idea,

especially the fasting blood glucose.

From what I know about this it is a lot saver for use. I have a Pituitary

Problem and my Adrenals don't get told to make Cortisol so I am on 10mgs at 5am,

5mgs at 9am, 10mgs at 1pm and 5 mgs at 6pm of Cortef HC for a total of 30 mgs /

day. When I had heart sugary they give me a large shot of Medrol to keep me

from going into Adrenal Crisis they had to do this before the sugary and after.

Or I would not be hear today.

Still you need to know taking this med slows down your Adrenals from working

people with Adrenal Fatigue take it to support there Adrenals so they can rest

and heal so when you come off this you need to come off it slow. I you feel

shaky and weak and sick to your stomach with the need to lay down call your Dr.

or get to the ER.

Hi All, I would like some advice on prednisone. my son is 6 and he has a dx of

PDD NOS (lately the MD says he is looking more like speech disorder) he is doing

better in all areas, but his speech still very delayed. now his DAN wants to try

prednisone for a short time to see if it helps, we have tried many things

including MB12, spirolactone, etc he did really bad on them.could any of you

My daughter is on hydrocortisone (brand name cortef) which is bioidentical to

the cortisol in our bodies. From what I have researched, hydrocortisone has the

least effect on the growth of children, with medrol a little bit more, but

prednisone has the greatest effect on stunting growth if used in excess. The

one disadvantage of the cortef is that you need to split doses to be taken

throughout the morning and afternoon. Now that my daughter is 10 and is able to

swallow pills, this is much easier. Prior to this, I was crushing pills into a

box for her. Depending on your son's symptoms, he may be able to minimize the

amount of cortef if he takes Florinef. Florinef acts like aldosterone and with

salt, has greatly diminished my daughter's adrenal symptoms while minimizing her

use of the cortef. This is definitely better since aldosterone is a primarily a

mineralcorticoid steroid versus the cortisol which is a glucocorticosteroid.

Florinef apparently

has less affect on a child's growth. I know this is a huge decision for your

family as it was a difficult one for us. A really good book on the topic is

" Safe Uses of Cortisol " by Dr. McKenzie.

I am not an expert on the topic, but as a mother with a very ill child with tons

of low adrenal symptoms, I was forced to research like I never have before.

Good luck.

prednisone for what?!?! My doctor has Rx this for my daughter when she gets an

asthma attack and she just can't breathe. The doctor told me to use it as a last

resort and only 1 teaspon before I go to emergency room. It has major side

effects. I would definitely seek a second opinion on this one.
