Guest guest
Connie, I'd almost bet the doctor will say " No! " to the question of oxycontin for just a week. You can try. For me the oxycontin is the only thing I've tried so far that actually helps reduce the pain in my feet, hips, and lower back. Yes, it does help me MOVE. You might want to try asking for a long term acting steroid shot. In the past I've taken both a quick acting and a long acting shot a week or so before going on vacation so I can walk places with the family. My problem, though, is that repeated actions fatigue me quickly. So even walking has its limits. I went to Disney World earlier this year. It was the last time I will walk there. I will rent a scooter from now on. We are going to the Smoky Mountains in August and may go to Dollywood since we haven't been there in years. I will rent a scooter, or get a wheel chair. Guest guest
Connie, I agree with Ray, in that your doctor is probably not going to prescribe OxyContin for your vacation. The steroid injection is a good suggestion, though. I get them periodically and like Ray will often ask for one before going on a trip. A few weeks ago my wife and I took a long weekend and went to Havre de Grace, Md, to do some lighthouse watching -- it's easy, they don't move fast! One that we wanted to see involved a hike of close to 3/4 mile each way. It was the only option. I knew I'd pay for it, but really wanted to see this one. I made it -- slowly -- and it was worth it. The lighthouse sits on top of a 100-foot cliff at the northern end of the Chesapeake. The view is a memory that I'll carry for a long time. I had asked the rheumatologist for an injection the week before we left and without that I really don't think I would have been able to do that hike. Without the OxyContin I know I wouldn't have even considered it! Hower http://home.dejazzd.com/hower

How much do you take and how long did it take before you noticed a difference? I also am dealing with MS/Lyme problems. Guest guest
I'm probably not typical but I took 'one' Ultram pill and was sick for months. Immediately I was hot and feverish and sick and was that way acutely about 24hrs or more, but had risidual nausea for months, and had to have nose surgery and was not able to take ANY pain meds during that period becuase that one Ultram pill screwed me up that bad. Marcia Pain Medications Since they took Vioxx off the market I have had more than my share of muscle pain that isn't alleviated by Advil (unless I take 4-6 every 4 hours and want to shred my stomach). I can take Vicodin but don't want to use that all the time. I know some people are so bad they are on morphine. Many of the muscle relaxants have side effects and brain fog/hangover type reactions. What works for any of you? I just read an article by Dr. McNett and he uses Tramadol or Ultram (says it's a virtually nonaddictive opiate/narcotic medication). Guest guest
Arrrgh! You are sick: stop working too hard!! There is a site called RemedyFind. They survey people about what works. Not exactly scientific, but if I recall correctly, the single biggest relief comes from lifestyle changes. Meanwhile, you could try DL-Phenylalanine, a neurotransmitter. I was consumed with pain until I started using it about 20 yrs ago. It reduced the pain. You have to learn to find the right dose. It has multiple effects, and too much can make you fried/tense. It will also decrease appetite, and help with brain fog and memory AND energy. You could also try tryptophan at bedtime. I just increased my dose, am sleeping longer and pain is decreasing. More sleep often equals less pain. Best wishes,. Guest guest
The PDR gives some warnings on Ultram. It may increase your risk of seizure. It is metabolized by the P450 pathway, CYP2D6, specifically. If you're on antidepressants, you could get an unwanted interaction. Guest guest
Hi Sharon, This is a great idea. I think most chronic pain patients will identify with the statement that pain meds do not last anywhere near what the prescription says it will. My meds have been: 800 mg Ibuprofen - over a year of this - bad on the stomach but it works Darvocet - over a year - works most of the time but not during bad flares of arthritis and not without the Ibuprofen Vicodin - 5 and 10 mg - Off and on for several months - had to take the 10 mg when I wasn't allowed to take the Ibuprofen Percocet - 2 months - worked great for surgery pain but not the sciatica Last but not least: *********Lyrica - I just started this medication for nerve pain. I am a bit worried about being on it since it is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE. It does block the sciatic pain. Takes time to adjust to side effects. Makes me dizzy and sleepy so I'm afraid to try driving my car. Pharmacist said it could take up to 2 weeks for these side effects to subside. Celebrex - I used this medication for quite some time years ago before all the warnings came out about the -2 Inhibitors. It worked very well but my doctor refused to prescribe it after the bextra scare. My pain treatment mostly goes to treating my arthritis which I have in my neck, spine, hips and knees. The anti-inflamatory medications work best but do cause stomach problems. Hope this is what your are looking for in your request for pain med. info. It is true of each that never last as long as the prescription label says it will. I always have to take more before their timer runs out. in NC > > Hi since everyone seems to be talking about their pain meds lately, I > was curious how many people go thru this? Guest guest
Hi Sharon, I stay away from most pain meds because they will reduce the motility of my GI tract and I have major problems already with the delayed stomach emptying and constipation. How do people on the opiod type drugs deal with constipation? This must be a major problem. The only pain med I take is Celebrex, which doesn't seem to help immediately for pain. But I have just started back on it since my neck has been really bothering me and it takes time to work at reducing inflamation. I'm hoping it will give me some relief in a week or two. Celebrex doesn't effect stomach motility but can still cause heartburn, which for me doesn't seem as bad lately. I take nexium and motility medication for that. Since most of my pain stems from muscle spasms, I was taking xanax, about 1/2 mg at night, so I could sleep and have a spasm-free night. This isn't very much, but I didn't want to get addicted. After over 3 monthes, the xanax didn't seem to be working as well and I was feeling worse during the day. I'm sure if I had upped the xanax and took it 3x's a day it would work better, but didn't want to do that so I quit it. Now I'm starting flexeril. I'll see how that goes. This med also reduces motility but I'm only taking 2 1/2 mg at night. So far my pain has just been spasms and nagging little pains that I could deal with. But I know with as bad arthritis as I have that one of these days I will encounter pain that will need more. At that point I don't know what I'll do. I guess deal with it best I can when it comes. I'm getting a taste of that now with my lastest flare. The vicodin and the ultram ER in the cabinet are looking better all the time. Guest guest
Dear Rochelle, I took Celebrex a long time ago, it was given to me as an anti-inflammatory, and I took a progression of pain pills with it, since my body would become used to whatever pain med. i was on, and I would have to move on to another one as the arthritis progressed. My ortho. dr. said, i could not take Celebrex for more than two years, it's not good for your body for long periods of time. I also have an ulcer, I use Tagamet or Xantac for it. Since I am now on an opiate, and have had weight loss surgery, I usually have to end up taking a colon cleanser, as my stomach can't hold a lot of food and can't take in all the fiber it needs. I've heard Benefiber is good, and they say it's tasteless, but I'm a chicken on trying it until someone actually tells me there's no taste! My daughter has beginnings of back pain, and she's taking Vicodin, which I know can cause liver damage over a long time of usage. I have a friend who uses Ultram, but she needs something stronger as that no longer is effective for her. I just use the one opiate, with Lortab for breakthrough pain. I hope you find something that works for your pain Jeannie Recent Activity 2New Members Visit Your Group
Guest guest
Dear Jeannie, I'm hoping the Celebrex will get me back to where I was a couple of weeks ago. I am so much worse this week than then. For me it isn't so much the pain but spasm and weakness and not being able to use my left arm because it causes the neck spasm. But I guess that's how arthritis progresses, every so often new symptoms and weaknesses and pains, that don't easily get better -- and often stay worse. I, like you, can't eat very much. That's because of my gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying) But I do have a container of benefiber in my kitchen and I sprinkle it on and mix it into Ensure and Boost and anything else I drink. This kind of fiber doesn't seem to upset my stomach and it is tasteless. However, it's hard to tell if it works or not for the constipation. I'm sorry your daughter is starting with the back pain. Once in a while my daughter (18 years old) tells me her neck or back hurts and I hope that she never has to go through what we go through. A long time ago when I was healthy I used to have a lot of faith in science and medicine. How quickly I discovered the limits when I came down with gastroparesis and now unrelenting spinal arthritis. These are difficult problems that won't be cured for a long time to come. Progress is in baby steps not giant leaps. Perhaps by the time my daughter is middle-aged something more effective may come along. At least maybe the bad side effects of drugs, pain drugs especially, might be eliminated. Guest guest
Dear Rochelle, I had to write down a list of everyhting that has been affected by my arthritis for my sister and daughter-my daughter is 29, and spent a few years as a blackjack dealer, they have to stand in place for 40 minutes at a time, whether they're dealing a game or not, so the cameras don't think they're acting suspicious. It takes quite a toll to just stand in one place for even what seems to be a short time. Then, she was in a couple car accidents, none her fault, so she's already at risk. i don't know how much of arthritis is inheirited, but at least she knows what to look for, and has my brain to pick.I'm sending her some Pilates tapes, i took it in PT, and it really seemed to help strengthen. I enjoyed it, and it didn't jolt my body. When I had my neck fusion 2 months ago, it really helped my arms, I was dropping things, couldn't remove lids from jars, they were very weak. But now I seem to have all my strength back, it feels so great to have one less thing to have to depend on my husband to do for me. They just took a 3 view xray of my thoracic part of my chest because of the pain there, which from reading my past xrays,CT, MRI, also seem to have arthritis in it. I don't think I want to go through back surgery again. I'm like you, I don't think anything like arthritis will be cured any time soon, it's just trying to make yourself as comfortable as you can with what you have available. It's a real pain travelling, I have to go in a special area so they don't hold up the regular line, I have so much metal in me, they have to wand every inch of it. I don't even get special treatment because of my husband working for TSA!! I understand why, but it's still no fun since I have so much metal. Well, just had to get that all off my chest, I'm going in for my shoulder my ulcersurgery in 1 week now, and it still gets me nervous, even though I'm familiar with so much of the process. It stresses my daughter too, she keeps asking me if I'm afraid-she's an only child-I'm really not, just tired of surgeries, even though they are necessary. Hope your Celebrex kicks in soon. I rely a lot on vitamins-vitamin D, magnesium, calcium citrate, the citrate because of the bad tummy. I tried all the glucosomine stuff, it worked in the beginning, but then i guess the arthritis got too bad. I can't take anything for my osteoporosis because of my ulcer, but the dr. said it was ok because I take a hormone replacement. Guest guest
Hi Rochelle you are correct that alot of pain medications will cause constipation. Most dr's I have talked to recommend trying foods that will help move thins along, some people eat raisins or nuts, some take extra fiber the kind you can mix in stuff and I know some people who just need something simple like applejuice. It all depends on the person but its something everyone has to be aware of that is on pain meds for any length of time. I take celebrex too and have for years for shoulder pain. My last dr told me I was inches away from tearing out my rotator cuffs so I am really careful of them now. Course back then I was riding 6x a week and wrestling with 1,000 lb animals which I no longer do But it always has helped me. I could always tell a BIG difference when I had to go off it before surgeries. Its one of the drugs you don't realize how much it helps till you can't take it then WOW what a difference. Flexeril is a good mild muscle relaxer that should work well for you. Its pretty low dose as far as most of them go. Hope it helps you and doesn't mess with your stomach too much. Guest guest
Patty, I would second Sherry's suggestions. Among fruits that are really good for this, prunes and figs, like Turkish ones, usually work well. If your tastes are particular, you might Google " fiber foods " or something similiar to bring up lists of foods (fruits for example) with their fiber content. Good quality yogurts in general, the ones with the pro-biotics listed on the containers, surely are good additions. Then I passed the info on to my Mom who has osteoporosis and fractures in her back that can be very painful. They helped her, too, and you don't have to worry about addiction or heavy duty drugs that can make you loopy! Physical therapy also helps - even with feet. Guest guest
This is the reason I had to stop taking Lyrica. I gained about 8 lbs in a month. I did not want to put additional stress on my back problems. I have started taking Topamax which has the opposite effect. It quashes the appetite. Guest guest
I tried Lyrica, they prescribed it for my fibromyalgia, but it didn't help at all. I didn't have any side effects but also no pain relief, so my doctor stopped it. I'm currently back on the Duregesic Fentanyl Patch and Vicodin 10/325. After I had the stimulator implanted I was able to go off the patch and just used a few Vicodin a day. My pain got out of control when I moved to IL and couldn't make it to Pain Management (1 1/2 hrs away). I also couldn't get to a rep to adjust my stimulator. When I came back to Texas my doctor increased my Vicodin again and put me back on the patch and we're trying to get my pain back under control.  I guess I'm lucky, I don't normally have side effects from meds. I have sjogrens and have really bad dry mouth - they tried me on Evoxac and instead of increasing my saliva, it caused me to sweat profusely!!!!! I was taking 2 showers a day, my clothes would be drenched. But that's the only med I've had a side effect with. And that was no fun at all!!!! I know this isn't a pain med, just thought it was an interesting side effect.  Take Care, B. in TEXAS Pain Medications I would be interested in knowing the name of pain medications that some of you have found to be fairly successful. I realize that everyone is different but it would be interesting to find out what is working over all. I had severe side affects from Lyrica. Guest guest
The only thing Lyrica did for me was drive me crazy. Seriously, my whole body became jittery when I would take it. I couldn't stand to be still. I've not really had a good experience with any pain meds, that was the reason for the scs implant. > > I would be interested in knowing the name of pain medications that some > of you have found to be fairly successful.
