Guest guest
I now have carpal tunnel in both hands (thanks RA!), and I find that wearing the supports for my wrists helps to prevent a lot of pain. When they really flare up and I start to have pins and needles, the braces really calm them down. They are a pain to wear and I use a piece of fleece underneath them because they can irritate the skin around my thumbs. I have 3 different brands and each one will rub weird on a different part of my hand. Also, now that it's hot and humid, they are kind of hot to wear. You could always get one and give it a try and see if you feel a difference. They do give me added support when I'm carrying things because I too will drop items as well. As for the supplements, I asked my doctor about them and he said that he had no issue with me trying them, but said that they mainly help people with OA, not RA. Usually with RA it's the swelling that's causing us the joint pain, so unless you have some damage I can't see them helping. I try to not worry about the future and all I can't do. And I tend to think that I can stay home and be in pain, or I can do something with my family and be in more pain but at least I would have lived. We just try to space things out so I can recover from the extra exertion. Go to the zoo, and just plan on taking it easy until your body calms back down. I hope that you can find some relief and get the care you need when your DH starts his new job. Guest guest
I wear the hand splints day or night. Especially when I am working doing something such as on the computer. I have a lot of problems with my fingers catching and my wrists have given out on me holding pots of stuff or pans. I have burned myself numerous times dropping food. I can't reach above my head due to my arms shoulders give me so much trouble now. I would be careful taking meds other than those prescribed due to it may interfere with other meds. Glucosamene I have used before and I saw no change in my RA. There are utensils that are reasonable at $2.95 a piece at Walmart or dollar tree stores for $1.00 that have the thick rubber type handles with a better grip than the regular ones. I got a couple of free ones from a survey that I took months ago online. I have them all but the collander. Hope you can find some help with this soon for I understand what you are going through with this RA. Irish **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps! Guest guest
Melody, Hello. I share your issues with your hands and the dropsies. I packed away all my china and purchased corelle and plastic ware. China was simply too heavy for my hands. Not only was I breaking too many dishes, I could not clean up my own mess. WalMart is having closeouts on plastic ware right now. I also use paper or plastic glasses. We can have a full life but we must make accomodations. I take vitamin C, D and potassium. Evenings I take a green tea capsule it seems to settle my stomach. I try to eat ginger everyday - it is anti-inflamatory. Please continue to ask questions. This group is awesome and we learn a lot from each other... Raniolo From: narrow_gate_ranch <ahearttowardhome@...> Subject: [ ] " Wraps " for support and pain relief? Date: Saturday, August 22, 2009, 9:18 AM Have any of you used these to help with pain (and to give support)? I have considered buying some from Wal-Mart to use on my wrists and elbows, but don't want to do that if it will just be a waste of money. They have a whole section of different kinds of wraps/supports in the pharmacy dept. I've looked at those that would be used on the wrists/hands and those for the elbows. Also, do any of you use (I guess it would be considered a vitamin...?? ) over the counter supplements? I bought some Glucosamine HCI 1500 mg with MSM 1500 mg it is supposed to help with " joint mobility " . My Dad has taken MSM for years and it has greatly helped him, he shared it with me. I've been taking it...hoping. ... It says, Extra Strength, Building blocks for long-term joint health, Clinically shown to promote mobility and comfort. Dear people, I'm just trying to find some help/relief until I am able to go see my Doctor. (My husband will be starting a new job Tuesday and that will mean that we will have GOOD insurance. I will wait until we are covered through them to have my necessary tests done.) Lifting things out of the washer, emptying the dishwasher, opening jars, cooking, driving, holding a book, typing, writing, reaching up to scratch my head, yesterday I really struggled hooking my bra and then afterwards I hurt terribly. I have also dropped plates of food feeding my family. I'm really struggling with knowing that this may be what my future looks like. And I think of all the ways I will have to change the ways I do things. I am also taking iron to help with my anemia (10.3) (which I have struggled with for years). These two bottles, along with the (OC) pain medicine bottles are hard to open. And I find " little things " like that frustrate me, mostly because they are simple, and I have always been very independent. Yesterday my husband mentioned going to the Zoo (we love the zoo!). I got excited and started to enthusiastically agree and then stopped myself...thinking/ wondered how I would do it with pain. I would love to hear your thoughts on using these wraps (and supplements) . I've wanted to ask for a couple of weeks but have hurt and typing I just couldn't do. And now, again (prob. b/c of all the typing) I hurt. I'll stop. Melody
Guest guest
I have bought the thumb and hand supports from Wal Mart. They work quite well but I hardly use them. My hands are clumsy enough. I can not function with them although I can sleep with them. I find them most useful in crowds. They protect me. They also make it easier not to shake hands, clap etc.... Guest guest
I tried the wrist " support " wraps from Walmart to use at night hoping that would get rid of or at least minimize the agonizing pain I'd wake up with but unfortantely, they did nothing at all for me. My RA doc had suggested them to give it a try - the only thing it did do was keep me from sleeping which I have enough of THAT problem! I guess it's one of those things you just have to try. What works for one doesn't always work for the next person and vice versa. ltdavis_jrdavis@... Guest guest
The wrist supports I had that worked so well would not let you bend your wrist. There was a metal plate in them. Actually, I bought them from Grainger, which is a tool place. But, they worked for me. > > I tried the wrist " support " wraps from Walmart to use at night hoping that would get rid of or at least minimize the agonizing pain I'd wake up with but unfortantely, they did nothing at all for me. Guest guest
gosh , I wish I had known that - we have a grainger - even in our small town! But honestly, at this point, I am so very gun shy at spending money on anything that I am not guaranteed will work except for meds. Even then - I hate it. I KNOW!! You can't live like that - but I have had so many terrible experiences and spent so- SOOOO much money, if I haven't tried it once, I want to hear from 1/2 doz people that it's worked for. Again, I know that sounds nuts but we are down to one income - I did have a very lucrative career but I can't do it anymore because of the RA and so, yeah, we are comfortable, but I am still frugal as hell when it comes to anything these days. I am so glad the support things work for you!! I so appreciate your input as with others - I realize that I wasn't the one who posted the original post - but it sure hit home to me! Bless you! ltdavis_jrdavis@... From: eandsspivey <emilyspivey@...> Subject: [ ] Re: " Wraps " for support and pain relief? Guest guest
Melody or anyone else having trouble with opening jars.... The " Jar Pop " , by Spring Mill home products, is advertised as being the worlds easiest jar opener... I received mine with some RA mail (junk mail), but I absolutely love it... I actually went on-line after using mine for a month and bought my Aunts (all in their 80's) one also... They equally love this great little tool... 5 stars on making difficult tasks easier. Also, for all the book readers that find it hard to hold their books, check out this site -- www.peeramid.com ... Hope this helps some...
