Guest guest
Allayne, How often do you have to get the blood tests? I can't believe that none of my doctors told me that. (or am I getting Alzheimer's too??... it's a good think I work around geriatric psychiatrists!!!) [ ] Sulfasalizine Hi , I was on Sulfasalizine for about 1 1/2 years and had fatigue most of that time. I do not know if that was the cause or if it is just one of the other lovely symptoms of this wonderful PA. I would, however, advise that you keep a good check on your liver enzymes. I now have cirrhosis and I think that much of it was caused by the medication that I have been on. One of the web sites gives cirrhosis as a rare side effect of Sulfasalizine. Guest guest
, I don't know how often you should have blood tests. My problem was found by my new rheumy. For several years I had been told that my liver enzymes were elevated, but no one pursued it or told me that it could be a problem. They just said that I could have a fatty liver, like it was nothing to worry about. Well, cirrhosis is definitely something to worry about. I can't take many medications now because of it. Don't let them blow you off about something that can be very important. Of course, it is not that important to them. Guest guest
I took sulfaszlizine but experienced mouth sores that I could no longer take it...........it also didn't do anything for my pain. I was put on the drug after vioxx finished off what little lining I had on my stomach :-( Sex drive - well, I think the tiredness in itself can decrease the desire. Having a good partner that will blend with you, your health issues can also inspire you to be a good partner. nanc [ ] sulfasalizine Recently started on sulfasalizine along with vioxx and really feel the difference. Haven't felt this good in a long time. Has anyone had any side effects from the sulfasalizine. I've been fatigued and seem to have a decreased sex drive lately. Has anyone experienced this? My wife doesn't think thats such a bad thing. Dan [
Guest guest
Dan I first went on Sulfasalizine around 4 years ago, building up to 2000mg per day over a four week period. When I first got to the 2000mg level I suffered what I thought was food poisoning (had to be within 20 feet of a bathroom) It was later considered to be poisoning from the drug. Since then I have been through periods of abstention but with worsening PA the Doc wanted me to persist with it and it would seem that the body does learn to tolerate it as I am consistently taking 2000mg per day (along with Methotrexate)with no side affects that I am aware of. I have to say I am unconvinced at this point that the Sulfasalizine has much affect, but then you have to stop to find out and I am not prepared for my condition to be any worse! Be prepared for some setbacks but I suggest you persist if your Doc recommends it Regards Geoff [ ] sulfasalizine Recently started on sulfasalizine along with vioxx and really feel the difference. Guest guest
The sulfaszlizine is a long term med. It is really not intended for you to feel short trem relief from it. It helps slow down the derterioration of the joints. At least that is what my Reumy told me. Are you on Methotrexate? If so that may be what was causing the mouth sores. Just checking :-) [

Guest guest
I am on sulfasalzine and I suffer from insomnia. I think I need a tweek in my meds because I have been alot more pain and not sleeping well for the past few days. My rheumy doesn't want to change my RA/fibro meds...but I see a psych tomorrow so I might need a change in my seroquel. It's frustrating, but sometimes you need to try different meds at different doses to find one that works for you. > > > > Hey everyone! Guest guest
Hi Kami - I've been taking SSZ for quite a while now and insomnia is definitely not a side effect for me. I do get insomnia from time to time, but I honestly think that comes either before or during a flare - not medication related. Maybe you could ask her Rheumy about this? At one point I had researched out all the side effects of the meds I am taking and this is what I came up with on the SSZ: Sulfasalazine All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome when using Sulfasalazine: Headache; loss of appetite; mild stomach upset or pain; nausea; vomiting. Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Sulfasalazine: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloody diarrhea; bluish discoloration of the skin or nails; chest pain; dark urine; decreased urination; fever, chills, or sore throat; hearing loss; mental or mood changes; muscle pain; numbness or tingling in the fingers or toes; pale stools; persistent loss of appetite; pinpoint bruises; red, swollen, peeling, or blistered skin; seizures; severe or persistent dizziness, drowsiness, headache, or trouble sleeping; severe or persistent stomach pain; shortness of breath; trouble walking; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; unusually pale skin; yellowing of the eyes; yellowing of the skin along with dark urine, pale stools, or persistent loss of appetite. Hope this helps.....Doreen Hey everyone! I hope everyone is having a pain free day! Many of you know while I have RA, my daughter has psoriatic arthritis. Guest guest
Hi Kami, I have been on Sulphasalazine for 6 years now, I take 4 in the morning and 4 at night. I was told to take the last 4 about 8hrs after the morning ones, was told they are more effective that way. I have insomnia and have had for about 12 years, but feel it's more to do with my condition. You could try giving your daughter the drug at an earlier time and see what happens. Hope this helps.  Best wishes to you both xx From: ~Kami~ <kamilleon@...> Subject: [ ] Sulfasalizine " " < > Date: Tuesday, 31 March, 2009, 2:56 PM Hey everyone! Guest guest
Hi Kami... Im . I just stopped sulfasalazine about a month ago and there was a huge difference. I was taking 2 in the morning and 2 at night. I have RA and PA. The sulfa seemed to make the psoriasis worst. The Rheumatologist said it was doing nothing for me anymore; not to mention the constant knee flares while taking the drug. I do seem to remember, at first, nights when i couldn't sleep, but mostly i remember serious night sweats and some gas (of all the things)--just make sure to have her drink tons of water; that always helped me. I know once i got used to it, there was no problems getting my 8 hrs in. Make sure they also get her on some type of cortical steroid. Makes all the difference. ~Both you and your daughter take care~ > > Hey everyone!
