Guest guest
Hi , Last year I had 2 of these injections and after the 2nd one, my pain went into remission for 6 months. Would have been longer, if I hadn't injured myself again. But this time it's facet joint inflamation - the kind of thing the epidurals don't help. As far as how many to have. Sometimes the first one is completely effective and I guess you wouldn't need any more. Sometime it is only partially effective and they suggest another injection a few weeks later. If the first one doesn't work, I think they might try another one just to see if it might help. Once in a while they suggest 3 shots, but only if the first two helped somewhat. Guest guest
Hi Rochelle, Thanks for the info, I read in another of your posts that you are having problems with your cervical facet joints. When I had my 1st MRI it showed that I had inflammation of the facet joints as well. Have you found or done anything that helps? So far, over the past few weeks, my Dr. has sent me for light phy. therapy(traction) and given me some medication, but mostly he wanted me to completely rest my neck. I've been wearing a rigid collar they gave me and it seems to help, but I'm starting to get a little impatient... I guess I should hope the injections will work. By the way, how did you re-injure your neck and are you feeling better? Take care,

Guest guest
Hi , First of all I should say that I don't really know how I reinjured my neck except that I got very sick from a stomach virus, got gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying) and lost lots of weight, plus was on a medication that made me feel like a zombie. I think I " kinked " my neck from trying to sit up on the couch while repeatedly nodding off to sleep. I developed weird sensations like muscle spasms in the side of my neck that go up into my face. Also use of my left arm (has moved to right arm now too) would make the side of my neck spasm and my shoulders hurt. I went to a spine surgeon, pain doctor, physical therapy and accupuncture, had another MRI and a CT scan and no one could explain it. Finally after 5 months I went to a well known, but retired, Professor of Rehab medicine from a nearby University med center. He said I had facet joint disease and he did injections with lidocane and cortisone at 3 different spots in my neck. These helped (And so far are the only thing that has helped) but are wearing off and the doctor is in Taiwan for the next 3 months. I've gone back to my own pain doctors and in a month or two will have some more injections done. My main problem is that my neck is very weak and very sensitive to any kind of traction, joint mobilization, massage or exercise. These facet joint injections are like a last hope for me. Maybe they will reduce the inflamation so I can begin gentle exercises to strengthen my neck. , perhaps you should ask your doctor what he plans after your neck is rested enough. I would assume that your physical therapy would start to get a little more vigorous so that neck strengthening exercises are included. The stronger your neck is the less likely you are to reinjure it (at least that is what I've been told). One other thing this Professor of Rehab told me is that joint mobilization (not manipulation), which some physical therapists do, also reduces facet joint inflamation. I had joint mobilization done over a year ago and that along with exercise and the cervical epidurals helped with my recovery at that time. These are things you can discuss with your doctor.
