Guest guest
Yes! Geez, my surgeon did surgery for a gentleman who abused alcohol and drugs for years. He did have 5 years in AA and NA and 3 years totally clean, but still... I think a surgeon would want a patient who is proactive about caring for themselves enough to get help and continue whatever treatment needed. I think it's amazing that you know enough about yourself and how to treat it. I think if any surgeon gives you grief, find a new one. Carol G. Guest guest
Missy, I don't know about Nerotin but I was on Abilify before and after surgery. Regarding psych meds in general my surgeon simply asked me if I thought I'd be okay not being on my meds for three days or so. I told him as long as I didn't have to interact with co-workers or be put in potentially stressful family situations, etc. I'd be fine. I also told him I wouldn't have a problem going to my psych and having him sign off on the deal. They didn't require that but yours may. For that matter it might not be a bad idea to get the advice of your psych with regards to not taking meds for a few days. Before surgery I was told to stop taking all medications the evening before surgery. I then, of course, didn't take pills immidiately after surgery for I think two days. I then went home. I was told Abilify could have sharp edges if I didn't fully crush it (or something weird/scary like that). The hospital gave me a pill crusher. It's a pretty fun tool to SMASH SMASH SMASH pills WEEEE. I smashed the crap out of the pills too out of fear of these " sharp edges " . I would then mix the crushed pills with unsweetended apple sauce and Spelnda. I did discover that Abilify crushed and in apple sauce, even sweetened heavily with Splenda, tastes HORRIBLY SOUR!! But it's bearable if you get it down quickly. I didn't have to crush pills after about two weeks. Abilify is very small so shouldn't be a problem at that time. I never did have a sharp edge incident and I now take these massive pre- natal vitamins and four massive calcium/VitD pills every day with no problems. Speaking of which it's time for two Calcium/VitD pills now. YUMMY!!! Some other posts I've read here in the past have talked about depression being affected, especially in women, with rapid weightloss from surgery. Maybe someone else with experience can better answer that. I hope you have insurance for your Abilify. I had to change my insurance to the more expensive carrier at my office because they had a " better " prescription coverage in that it charged a flat rate. Abilify is incredibly expensive. > > Will they approve depression patients for surgery? I suffer from major > depression and that's why I gained so much weight quickly. Guest guest
I was diagnosed BiPolar several years ago. I continued to take my meds after surgery, just had to have them " tweeked " a bit. However, since the surgery, my diagnosis has been reversed. My new Dr says I suffer from ADHD, and depression, with panic disorder. He said it is highly likely that I wouldn't have had to have surgery if I hadn't have been put on so many psych meds that cause weight gain Although can I tell you that I am just coming off the last of the BiPolar meds (Lamictal) and I am under a TON of stress with trying to sell a house, move, deal with a teenager that refuses to grow up, have my father live with us now, etc... and I am GOING OUT OF MY MIND LOL Even though they use Lamictal as a modd stabilizer it also has antidepressant qualities and I think it helps with anxiety as well. Guest guest
Doctors...sometimes I wonder if they shouldn't take some psych drugs themselves. I was on Lamictal too as part of my " mild " / " slight " bi- polar diagnosis prior to surgery. I think it helped but am not really sure since I don't miss taking it now. At least I don't think I do. How's that for mental? > > I was diagnosed BiPolar several years ago. I continued to take my meds after > surgery, just had to have them " tweeked " a bit.
