My sister was diagnosed with Auto Immune RA about three years ago. She was

unable to work for a couple years and has recently started working. (YAY!) But

she's lost her health insurance and was unable to complete one full course of

treatment, as the medications were so expensive even with insurance.

We are working on getting her infusion treatments of Remicaide on a cash pay

basis, not sure how much luck we'll have.

She is dealing with pain 24 hours a day. Swollen foot and ankle she walks with a

cane.

Is there any suggestions about medications, services, keeping the swelling down?

I feel really bad for her, she's my younger sister who essentially has a life

filled with pills that don't really help the pain and very limited resources to

get cured.

Thanks,

Ayesha

Have you tried any of the patient assistance programs through the drug

companies?? I get some medication for free from the drug company. I just

filled out the paperwork and my dr filled out part and we sent it in. They send

the medication to my dr and I pick up from him. I have no insurance to pay for

my Rx. Hope you can get some help for her.

Thanks

Suggestions for pain/swelling: try alternating hot/cold compresses. I make my

own hot compress by putting rice in a sturdy ziplock bag and microwaving it for

a few minutes to get it very warm. It can wrap around nicely and can be reused.

I make my own ice compress by using a couple of quart freezer ziplocks, one

inside the other, filled with roughly 3/4 cup of rubbing alcohol, food coloring,

and water. The food coloring tells everyone in the house that it isn't for

eating. The alcohol wont let it freeze solid. That lets it wrap around my ankles

or knees better.

This may help some- it does help me.

Our family does rice socks...take an old sock, dump rice in it, and either sew

or tie the top. you can use these forever, zap in the microwave for 3 minutes or

so.

ayesha, honey, i want to thank you for the love and support you are showing your

sister. A lot of us here in the group don't have any kind of understanding or

support system from our families. if you ever need to rant/vent/whatever, this

is a safe place. we know how hard it is to love and live with someone with RA. I

must say that I have been abundantly blessed with loving family, church family,

and my girlfriends. This old gal takes her hat off to you!

bless you.
