whoa, why don't you all ease up on and Amy. They stated an opinion and

they are allowed to. How dare anyone judge them for the choices they make. If

I remember correctly she never mentioned anyones name in her original e-mail.

So if you all know who she was refering to in her post then what does that

tell you. She wasn't saying protein was evil just that the only talk seemed

to be about protein supplements and it was being said by someone who sell it.

Let's try and keep it friendly and informational around here.

while it's true sells protein supplements..I for one have NEVER

seen her try to get anyone to buy anything from her...am I blind?...

doesn't make a profit from her business..she does what she does to educate

because she CARES about people...and....she's NOT the only one who touts

protein supplements here..I used to be blind like some people still chose to

remain...but, seeing the people who are suffering down the road opened my

eyes..that's one of the good things about this list...that we can all learn

...if we can keep our minds open and stop thinking our particular surgeons

are GOD..they aren't ..many of them do this surgery and really don't have a

clue what happens to us 10 or 15 years down the road... how many times do we

have to see someone suffering on this list with nutritional deficiencies

before we take our heads out of the sand and see the light?...and how many

many times have we watched the surgery " fail " for people for one reason or

another...sometimes it even because they thing..even though the have

drastically altered their digestive system..that they are still normal....

I'm not..I had a portion of my intestine bypassed..I had a small pouch

formed from my stomach that, because of that action doesn't digest food

properly..I made the decision to do that because I was MORBIDLY obese. not

matter what a surgeon says..I've researched.and found out that no matter how

much I had bypassed, I can NOT get the protein I need from the food I

eat...(and I *do* eat 5 or 6 small meals a day) ..and I am not willing to

take the chance of dying from lack of nutrition because I'm too scared to

admit that

Our son's behavior was greatly improved. He always slept through the night,

so that was never an issue. However, he is so much calmer. Eye contact,

language, attention span and behavior all improved on the diet.

Good luck and welcome!

Hi Tracey, glad to see you made it to the right spot. We've been on

the diet for three months now and I'll give you my suggestions. One

thing I bought pre diet was a hand blender which was way too big, you

just don't realize how little the amounts are going to be until you

start making them. What I found that works great is a coffee

frother, its a tiny hand held whipper that will whip the smallest

amount of cream. I don't know where you live but you should be able

to find these in any home store, they are made by bonjour. The other

thing is we started out having the dietician do our recipes and it

was always a fight because he never wanted the exact combination that

I had the recipe for so since doing it myself I can give him all the

things he used to eat, flavored goldfish crackers, etc. You can fit

almost anything in as long as it doesn't contain sugar. I also made

up a choc. ice cream recipe and use the choc mousse one off the

recipe site for his fat sometimes we even whip up the cream to top it

off, these things work out nicely especially for B-day parties, they

have something similar to what the other kids have. He went from

arguing over his meals to being excited about eating. I think that

its important to keep them eating food that make them happy, they are

going through a hard time and we can make things easier for them by

letting them make some of the choices. Popcorn is something that

looks like more to them and you can add in butter, also a free food

is keto popsicles made with sweetener and kool aid we try to always

keep them on hand. Also you can get an inexpensive snow cone machine

and use the kool aid as a free food. It takes them awhile to adjust

to eating smaller quanities but they do eventually. Be mentally

prepared its time consuming and very hard to deal with at first but

it does get better. We've recently went from 19-24 seizures daily to

only one last week but it took us two and a half months to get there

so its not always a quick fix. Trust the people on this group

they've been through it and have given me great advice. Our neuro

didn't want to reduce meds. until we saw some seizure control but the

parents on here urged me to keep asking him to anyway. This is the

reason we now have seizure control, the meds can do strange things on

the diet and the quicker you can get rid of them the better. Our son

gets better with every dose we drop. Its a combination of proper diet

ratio and med reduction which can be tricky. My other suggestion is

to keep good seizure and weight records which will help you to know

whats working and what you need to adjust. Good luck.

I would try getting her use to some ketofoods. How will she take the

cream and oil for example? Experiment and see what she likes. You can

whip both together with artificial sweenter (find out what kind your

dietican uses) and either vanilla (find out from dietican what brand, it

can get very brand specific) or for other flavours, order from Bickford

flavours. I believe all except one of their vanillas is ketofriendly

and it can sure make a nice difference for a kid. They have almost every

flavour you can think of (chocolate and strawberry are two of Jess'

favourites) but there is banana, apple cherry, apple maple (if you mix

with melted butter makes a half decent " syrup " ), peanut butter,

rootbeer, on and on it goes.....

Anyway refrigerate after whipping and its like whipped cream a nonketo

person might put on their fruit. Beware, though, Bickford flavours do

not change the colour, everything stays white :)

Some kids will take the oil mixed with some other things as a salad

dressing or dip for veggies. Some kids will drink cream straight,

others like it mixed in diet pop for a float. Play around and get her

input, could make life much easier.

When I make dessert (the whipped cream and oil) I make at least a double

batch and then measure into two small containers so thats for two of

that particular meal. Saves on whipping constantly, now I only spend a

half a day doing it instead of all. Lots of small containers with good

solid lids that fit right are essential for us because all the desserts

go into them. Check with school to ensure they will keep her lunch and

any snacks in refrigerator. Small ice packs are good for keeping

lunches cold when going out for the day.

Couldn't live without my handheld mixer, beware, you can exentually whip

a hole right through plastic bowls, after going through 3 (in about 3

years so I geuss thats not too bad LOL) I now use glass.

Be careful with popcorn, some kids can handle it, some can't even when

properly calculated in, probably cuz its a starch. I would talk to

dietican now and find out what brands she uses so you can start buying

(cream, mayonnaise, vanilla, etc). And play around with some of the

recipes in the files, you won't know exact amounts but you can still

play around to see what she likes.

Good luck!

I would buy some small containers for packing meals to go.

Rubber spatula for scraping.

Find out what kind of cream the hospital uses. Locate a store that carries

that cream.

Pam cooking spray or the like....

Just some thoughts that come to mind....

Good luck.
