Guest guest
Friends: Over on the central Texas board there has been talk about the methods of attaching the stoma lately. The reason for this is because a member of that community had her stoma stretch within a year after surgery. The pictures showed that her intestine attached to her pouch had grown very large. There are theories about her body trying to compensate for a tiny stomach, etc. Anyway, our doctor says he now tries to staple the stoma instead of hand-stitching it because the staples hold better. I figured it was because they probably had some fancy new tools since they're beginning to do a few lap RNY cases. This lady, a dear friend of mine, has kind of alarmed us, saying that the doctor said that hand-stitched tended to stretch more than stapled. Another patient reported the doctor said it was blown " out of proportion. " I figure it's just a new innovation, and that those of us who are hand-stitched are still probably okay. Some people just stretch and some people just need revisions. We all know some luck is involved here. Anyone hear anything or have any comments on this? I know several post ops (one of which is 11 yrs post op) who claim that they still throw up if they eat too much. I don't do this & never have. I interpret this to mean that some pouches & stoma's stretch more than others. I agree that it sounds like the staple around the stoma is an innovative approach, & there are those who may be helped with this type of reinforcement. I think if your stoma still works within 12 mos post op, you probably are not prone to stretch regardless of the method.

Some surgeons use them for the single purpose of reducing the stoma stretching. The staples sound more enduring, but that's another topic I guess.
