I've just recently started to take up this principle as well (after 8

months.) I was a very active child. It's only when exercise became

compulsory that I started to hate it. It became all about weight loss,

burning x amount of calories, etc. It has been VERY hard (harder than

the eating part of IE for me) to quit thinking like this. I've only

recently started to accept that exercise does not have to be a full

workout in order to be worth it. I still have to remind myself of this

contstantly. I've been getting on the treadmill a little lately (15

min) and each time I step on, my mind automatically thinks,

time~calories~heart rate~weight loss, etc. I have to make a concious

decision to STOP thinking and just do a little something. I am slowly

working into the gray area.

Exercise is an 'odd' topic for me. Ask anyone who knows me and they

will all describe me as either 'vibrating' or in constant motion. And

living on acreage plus being at home 24/7 means that I am usually

always up to something, especially in the 'yard' (really vague concept

where flowers blend right into brush/woods). Yet I know that I do sit

more these days - especially in front of the computer! But that

doesn't last long as we have two big dogs who get antsy to go out so

we take walk-abouts several times each day. (We can't leave the dogs

out as they have too many things to 'play with' in the woods)

I've tried several 'exercise' programs but they all flame out for me.

There is just something about 1) being in one place doing SPECIFIC

movements that I bore with quickly & 2) resent the time and

NON-productiveness of movement for movement's sake. If I want to spend

15 minutes to 1/2 hour each day doing movements - let it be cleaning

the house or cutting brush or hauling firewood etc. So for now hanging

the laundry on the line, taking it down and folding it, sweeping the

floor and just keeping the house 'picked up' are enough for me ;-) I

feel I 'earn' my sit-down time too :) :)

I took some time off of working out this year until I felt ready to

get back to it because I enjoyed it and wanted to do it and not

because I've started another diet and had to get the numbers on the

scale down. I've been doing a lot of training for my recent job

change as there is a physical aspect to it. I've forgotten what I

enjoy doing. Then I realized my favourite thing to do is high impact

aerobics. I used to belong to a gym and enjoyed going three to five

times a week (yes five was too much as I developed shin splints) and

met some really fun people to hang out with afterward. I moved away

and don't see them anymore but I've always loved aerobics and dancing

around getting those endorphins pumping and the music gets me going.

I don't have a set schedule with it anymore as I work 12 hour shifts

and can get kinda tired but when I do it - I really enjoy it.

I have always disliked exercise for the sake of dieting and burnining calories. I also don't enjoy working out in a gym or class structure. What I love to do for movement and exercise is walk, do yard work and clean the house. I walk to and from work Mon - Fri. I also walk alot around my town - I live close to everything (w/in 2 mi). I also feel very connected spiritually when I'm outside, so walking and yard work makes me feel great. I love using my body the way it was intended, and I'm very lucky to live close to my town's center and my job.

Hi All,This message is continuing with our weekly theme of a thread of messages focusing on one of the ten principles outlined in the book Intuitive Eating by Tribole and Resch. Please post and let us know what you think about this week's topic. Perhaps you could quote a small section that meant something special to you. If you haven't read the book for a while, you might want to re-read this section. Something new might jump out at you that you would like to share about. If you don't have the book that's okay too, just post on the topic or other peoples comments about the topic. If you are new to the group and would like to read and post about a previous week's theme, that's okay too. plan" for me. Actually exercise came first in my case. The first diet I ever went on started after I started going to a gym to work out and learnt that eating "healthier" would give me better results.Part of my problem is that I'm very goal oriented. I think of exercise as an all or nothing thing. I set lofty goals and work hard to achieve them. I've worked hard the past two months to not let IE become something so obsessive; that is, to change the obsessive diet mentality. I think I'll start off by taking some beginner swimming lessons. For the sake of balance, it was important for me to give priority to

this principle when I started IE. I prefer to say " Move " and feel the

difference and Tribole and Resch do highlight movement. The term

exercise is too intertwined with the dieting paradigm for me.

Although, I do still use the term occasionally to translate my

movement practice with others.

When I started IE, I wanted to know what would happen to my body and

my life if I practiced 27 minutes or more of movement everyday. This

was my version of experimenting with the " external " recommendation of

30 minutes a day of exercise. Could intentionally moving everyday

really make a difference in my life? The answer after 156 days of

intentional movement is YES, indeed! In the process of committing to a

movement practice, I learned the joy of movement for the sake of

movement, that regular movement helps me manage my emotional and

physiological states (movement helps me process through issues and

helps prevent emotional " energy " from building up in my body. I read

somewhere that exercise/movement is an opportunity for the mind/body

to be at one...participating in a process together...and that movement

helps massages your internal organs...I liked both of these ideas.

Now, I understand on a much deeper and intuitive level about the

importance of movement in my life. Before, I just didn't get it. All

of the craziness around exercise and dieting had me resisting a

integral component of taking care of myself...basic joyful movement. I

walk and explore my neighborhoods...when I need to go shopping for

groceries or toiletries I go early and walk the parking lots and

surrounding areas before completing my shopping. I discovered a nature

trail just the other day during a pre-shopping adventure. For me,

movement has to be incorporated into my everyday life. I no longer

have the motivation or interest in go to the " gym " . I had to make

peace with exercise/movement. And, I definitely feel the difference

that movement makes in my life.
