Guest guest
Heres an interesting one gang.....I was diagnosed as anemic two and a half yrs ago. Six months of Iron pills cured that, but heres the kicker.....the anemia occurred right before I developed symptoms of PA!!!!!!!!! I have read somewhere in some medical book that Anemia is a forerunner of PA. Guest guest
spinach also has oxalates that prevent iron absorbtion. Can I do more than just eat steak and spinach 3x day? * BIG huge advice--- what helps iron absorb in the body is to eat a lot of green leafy vegetables and also some cereals are fortified with iron. Iron helps Vitamin C or maybe it is the other way around and VIT C helps iron absorb in the body, somehow my brain is not working. Anyway, do have those in the morning. Spinach is high in iron, and meat does too. Ask a doctor or nutritionist for a good list. Also take some iron pills, make sure those do not get near Children though. They could take them and have deadly results if they ate them or too many of course. Thanks, ==>My Dessicated Liver tablets contain 480 mg per tablet, and it says you can take 4 per day, but since you are low on iron you could take 2 times that, in divided doses. Guest guest
What is Dessicated Liver tablets? I am very anemic too and I have my period now too and am wondering if that is contributing to my blood pressure problem. I take iron supplemtns. Is the liver pills better and if so where do you found that? Thanks Theresa Bee wrote > ==>My Dessicated Liver tablets contain 480 mg per tablet, and it says > you can take 4 per day, but since you are low on iron you could take 2 > times that, in divided doses. > > Bee >
Guest guest
Theresa, they are in any health food store and very inexpensive. I'm sure you know that iron is not easily absorbed, but there's lots of iron in liver - which I can't eat, so I'll take the pills :-) On 1-Jul-06, at 10:34 AM, Theresa wrote: > What is Dessicated Liver tablets? It is not recommended that you take iron capsules other than dessicated liver. Please note that my article says taking supplements other than those listed is not recommended. ==>There are two types of iron, heme found in red meats, esp. liver, and non-heme found in plants which is not assimilated by the body like heme iron. Non-heme iron will build up in the body causing problems. Iron is only required by the body in trace amounts unless you are losing lots of blood, but do not take it over long periods of time. Guest guest
Theresa, I meant to say I'm sure you know iron " pills " aren't easily absorbed. It's an ongoing problem that most women experience, on top of that they're also constipating! Guest guest
Bee, My most recent period was unbelievably heavy, I lost a lot of blood and unfortunately it takes a while to build up iron levels again. A few before that were ok, much more reasonable, but prior to that they were quite heavy. What I'd like to understand is why it got so heavy. I remember a few years ago a naturopath said that if I detox too quickly my liver could release a lot of hormones all at once. Do you think with all the lemon, chlorophyll, enemas etc I may have released a lot of hormones at once? Or maybe it's just the change? The other possibiltiy is I've been eating a lot more meat than before and supposedly women with high estrogen should cut down on meat (that doesn't work for me). The thing is, I'm concerned about giong through this with future cycles. Even if I'm on the liver tablets I can't go through losing so much every month. is there anything else I can do about this? Thank you, Elyse

I believe your heavy period means that hormones are changing and being affected by the program, but it will normalize as you continue to progress. > The thing is, I'm concerned about giong through this with future > cycles. My M.D. recommended it when I had heavy bleeding for 31 days straight, and it worked in about 3 days. That's why you should start taking it before your period starts. I knew I needed it so I never followed that, glad to get re-enforcement on that :-) In fact I'm very relieved, whew :-) > ==>For heavy periods take 500 mg of bioflavonoids (bought separately > from vitamin C) every day, starting about 5 days before your period, > and continue for the duration of your period, and then stop until the > next time. Are the bioflavinoids supposed to slow down bleeding? I never know when my period will come, it's pretty erratic, but I'l guestimate. Did your MD suggest anything else to take throughout the month to hopefully avoid it getting like that in the first place. Wow, 31 days straight! I've never had it that long. does that mean you were estrogen dominant as well? elyse

I haven't had to take bioflavonoids since, but have recommended it for others, even on this group, and it works. My doctor didn't recommend anything else. Guest guest
I too am anemic, but I don't attribute it to medicine (although it very well may be). I attribute it to the RA Monster. I could be wrong, but in retrospect, it really doesnt matter. Anemia makes me feel weak and fragile, i dont get pale or pasty, but I feel it internally... I know take Folic Acid and I feel better. The leucovorin wasnt really " doing the trick " OKD
Guest guest
Hi Heidi.       Yes, I have. Since being diagnosed with RA, I have been anemic and had 3 blood transfusions. Each time I took Iron pills for almost a year. I did not know it as I am always tired from the RA. At least it is fixable.  Hugs,  Barbara From: heidi <giambifan2001@...> Subject: [ ] anemic Date: Tuesday, August 31, 2010, 9:18 AM  Hi, I was wondering if anyone else has anemia.aia was just diagnosed with iron def anemia. My family dr. seems to think it's from Orencia, but I have been on it for over a year now and this is the first I have ever been anemic. Guest guest
My hubby has psoriatic arthritis and his bloodwork does show his iron level a bit low. They are not to concerned right now because the level isn't that low and they are confident once they get his meds working it'll straighten out by itself. We do take one a day and extra vitamins each day. I have Crohn's Disease and was anemic and had to take pills. Have they suggested putting on pills temporarily to get it up? Guest guest
Hi all- I too have Anemia of Chronic Disease, which my rheumy assures me is directly related to my RA. I've dealt with it for several years now. It doesn't get a lot better, but if you're careful with diet and meds you can keep it closer to normal. I take an iron pill every day. It used to be Niferex, which was awesome, but insurance does not cover iron because it is avaialable OTC, but Niferex is about $60 a month. I switched to a different iron pill, along with Folic Acid and Vitamin C. It keeps my blood numbers at the very low end of normal. Eat lots of iron-rich food: spinach, arugula, other leafy greens. Also, your body absorbs more iron if you wat it with Vitamin C rich foods. So if you eat steak, add some bell peppers or drink some milk. Iron fortified cereals, like steel cut oatmeal, helps too. Last but not least, you should add anemia to your medical information, and think about getting a medical alert bracelet. If you're in an accident and bleeding, emergency personnel will need to know. Hang in there Amber in MO > > Yes, I have been diagnosed with severe anemia. So bad that they're on the verge of giving me blood transfusions and/or a bone marrow biopsy. And, of course, it makes me feel like ****. Have no energy at all, can barely move some days. Their theory is that it was caused by Plaquenil (have been off it since May, seeing if the anemia improves). Or, the other theory is that it is simply " Anemia of Chronic Disease " , i.e. part of the RA itself. I'm currently taking iron and folic acid (w/ metho.) to see if that will help. And if not - I don't know what the plan is. All I know know is that my body is just not making blood worth a damn. Anybody know what treatments are available or used for this? > Marsha > >
Guest guest
Dr. Oz also reccommends using an iron skillet for cooking to give iron to your diet. They are not fancy and are heavy but I am hoping to get a little extra iron from them. Rojo Noble Beasts Ranch Grass Valley, CA
