Guest guest
Botox is an almost dead version of the live virus. I get it for my migraines with no side effect. I've been getting them once or twice a year for almost 8 years. And if anyone would ever get a side effect from anything, I'm usually That Person! :: G I have a question. Is botox a live virus?Has anyone had it while they had RA?? Thanks. Guest guest
Hi, Heidi. Botox does not contain a virus, it's a toxin (a protein/protein complex) produced by a bacterium. From Allergan: Seven distinct antigenic botulinum toxins are produced by different strains of the Clostridium botulinum (A, B, C, D, E, F and G). OnabotulinumtoxinA (BOTOX®) is a medical product containing tiny amounts of the highly purified botulinum toxin protein refined from the bacterium. The product is administered in small injections to reduce specific muscle activity by blocking the overactive nerve impulses that trigger excessive muscle contractions or glandular activity. http://www.allergan.com/assets/pdf/botox_history_and_development.pdf Not an MD On Mon, Sep 6, 2010 at 10:41 AM, heidi <giambifan2001@...> wrote: > I have a question. Is botox a live virus?Has anyone had it while they had RA?? Guest guest
There are a few things to think about here. Did you have a wrap done when you had the myotomy? if so could it be a little tight? I always look at my barium swallow pics so I knew the shape of my " E " . Botox really did not work for me due to the advanced state I was in with the disease. Also in my opinion botox should only be used in sever cases where a full on surgery would have a dire outcome. I say this because of the many doctors and surgeons I have talked to over the years what I have experienced over the years when I have had surgery or other procedures done. If you have any questions for me please feel free to contact me any time. in Georgia ________________________________ From: Kay Davies <kayf.davies@...> achalasia Sent: Monday, August 29, 2011 11:13 AM Subject: Botox Hi everyone. I have just had a rough few weeks which look like going nowhere fast. I would love to hear from any of you who have had any experience with botox. Everything in my gullet decided to pack up at once so have been in hospital on a drip for a fortnight whilst various things were tried to relax things. The good news is the myotomy hasn't failed but there is scar tissue at the lower end of the gullet which is causing tightness. A dilatation seems to have helped that out though which is good. However I agreed to try having botox in the upper sphincter (chryco pharyngeal?) as this is also very tight and a dilatation a few weeks ago didn't sort this out. I have been left with a huge amount of mucus which when I eat just seems to cause retching and a lot of sensitivity and everything still seems to be stuck in my throat. Am seeing and ENT surgeon tomorrow to discuss having this muscle cut like the myotomy on the lower end but I just wondered if anyone else had experience of the upper sphincter and if all this mucus settles or if it simply hasn't worked. thanks so much and best wishes to you all. Guest guest
Hi Thanks so much for your comments. My consultant also said the wrap might be a little tight but the dilataion in the area of the scar tissue seems to have sorted out the lower end so this is ok for the time being. The evidence now suggests that the upper end is severely constricted and the only thing left is to operate and cut the muscle similar to the myotomy. I must say that I was cynical about the botox but agreed to give it a go just to be sure but I really wouldn't bother with it again. It has definately caused more problems than it solved. best wishes Kay > > There are a few things to think about here. Â Did you have a wrap done when you had the myotomy?
