Guest guest
What has your orthopedist said about your ankle pain? Does not sound like it is related to your hip, although the imbalance of favoring your ankle, could cause more problems at the knee and hip, and back. I would get it worked up by your physician first. Marilyn sublackburn01 wrote: Hello Everybody I have osteoarthritis of the left hip and will be having a THR towards the end of the year. Guest guest
Hi Su, wondering if you have been measured for leg length discrepency. I was helped tremendously when I started wearing a lift about a year and a half before my THR. It alleviated my limp a bit and a lot of my other pains (back, leg, etc) were also lessened. - :-) > Hello Everybody > I have osteoarthritis of the left hip and will be having a THR > towards the end of the year. Guest guest
-Hi Marilyn I last saw my orthopaedic surgeon in February when the ankle pain was only intermittent and he didn't seem concerned about it. I have just been to see my own doctor (G.P.) who is now trying to get me an earlier date for my op. Guest guest
Hi My left leg certainly appears shorter than the right and I can't stand up perfectly straight without my left heel being inches off the ground. I suppose this is due to the tightening of the muscles amongst other things. I went to see my own doctor (G.P.) to ask to be referred to the physiotherapist with a view to checking the height of my stick and possibly recommending a lift in my shoe. He said that he was going to try and get the date of my op brought forward. Watch this space!! Thanks for your reply. Guest guest
Are you overcompensating for you knee pain by limping or changing your gait? I have shoes I can no longer wear because even though I try not to limp, I fall on my heel differently because of the pain in my knees and sometimes my heel pain is worse than my knees. If you think you are not limping, walk towards a full length mirror. You could be limping or walking differently even though you are not aware of it. hedy_dilmanian <heds401@...> wrote: Hi, Do any of you have ankle pain as well as knee pain? Guest guest
I also have ankle and hip pain. It is a good idea to have your doctor check you for rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. My pain mainly seems to be the inflammation spreading from my knees. My best solutions have been to wear full length (above the knee) support stockings to control the inflammation and swelling and see a good PT that specializes in chronic pain. Those two things have done wonders for me. Mike MT ANKLE PAIN Hi, Do any of you have ankle pain as well as knee pain? I am 22 and 2 months ago I started experiencing knee pain. Guest guest
Yes I have been limping. I keep my legs as straight as possible when I walk. My physical therapist yelled at me for this lol. > Hi, > Do any of you have ankle pain as well as knee pain? I am 22 and 2 > months ago I started experiencing knee pain. Guest guest
I have a feeling stockings would make me worse. Because even when I wear patellar straps (the ones that go below the knee) the pressure makes the pain muchhh worse. > > I also have ankle and hip pain. Guest guest
One important thing in walking is to get full extensin of your knee with every step. Sometimes, I have to concentrate on straightening my leg as mush as possible with each step of my bad leg. Without full extension, it will be impossible to not strain other areas(hip, ankle) It always hurt my hip after a few blocks of walking. Guest guest
I had chondromalacia (still do). That was bad enough, but, taping my knee, I still tried to hike occasionally. Once, I was out there, alone in the mtns, when my knee started hurting so bad I was crying by the time I made it back to the car. I went to my OS. He said, without even poking me, that I had arthritis. I asked for an X-ray. I knew I didn't have arthritis. The X-ray showed good, thick articular cartilage. I should have asked for an MRI, and have no idea why I didn't. Then he said it was " probably " patellar tendinitis. I knew it wasn't that, because it didn't hurt in my patellar tendon. It hurt deep inside my knee, on the lateral side. I thought maybe it was ITBS. Went to a physical med doc -- really nice guy, but again no MRI. He sent me to ITBS PT. No help. I was reduced to using a cane. At this time I was using UC Med Ctr as my HMO (lots of good doctors, I had thought). I made an appt with an OS who had operated on my son's arm. I hadn't known he also did knees. He was a really good surgeon and person. Had to wait 5 months. Night before the appt, he calls me up & says he's really sorry, but he has an emergency surgery the next day & I'll need to reschedule. I call to reschedule and the heartless staff can't find me an appt until another 5 months out. I wait. The day before the appt, a staffmember calls me and tells me that the doc isn't taking new patients. You can imagine the tantrum I threw. She wouldn't give in. I showed up at the clinic at the appointed time, they told me he was in surgery. As I was standing there, another woman walked up & said she had an appt with my OS at my time!!! I demanded to see the office mgr, who took me aside and said no, the woman would not be seeing this doctor. I could not get another appt. I later learned that they were canning him, probably because he had complained too much about their administrative policies (short-staffed, 15-min. appts, etc.). So I switched to another clinic, smaller but with a good rep. Found a surgeon via their Website -- he looked friendly & as if he had a sense of humor (this turned out to be right). Made an appt. Told him I was going to cut my leg off at the knee if I couldn't get it fixed. HE ordered an MRI. And there was this huge tear in my meniscus. We scheduled surgery for 2 weeks from then, it went off w/o a hitch, I never had pain, and was instantly back on my feet (albeit with chondromalacia). The moral of the story is, keep looking till you get someone who'll find out what's really wrong with you. Ann ANKLE PAIN > > > Hi, > Do any of you have ankle pain as well as knee pain? Guest guest
The docs I have been to just smile and brush it off, saying I'll be back to perfect condition in a few weeks. Because I'm 22 they think it can't be that bad. The first one didn't even take an x-ray. The second one took an x-ray but didn't say I should get an MRI. Man I hope i don't have lupus or rheumatoid arthritis! I think my hand knuckles are starting to ache too, but I'm not sure if I'm imagining it. > > > > I also have ankle and hip pain. Guest guest
It's the same with me, I'm 20. They did an X-ray once, mainly to shut my Mum up I think, they didn't see anything. I get hand pain too, never mentioned it to the Dr though. I'm thinking of making flashcards for them instead of talking, maybe they'll take more notice of what I have to say that way . If you keep bugging Dr's they eventually get fed up and sometime give in. Plus it's just fun to bug them if they ignore you. Kirsty. Guest guest
I hurt my upper back (T4-5) in January 1994. All I was doing was bending over frontways & a little sideways while I was fixing my hair. My left arm was still up holding my hair, and my right arm was reaching for bobby pins on top of the toilet tank. WHANG!! I felt like I'd been shot. It took me TWO YEARS before I finally found a PT (mind you, not a doctor or a chiro -- I tried one of those & his technique was too harsh for my back & made it worse & he didn't care) who showed me how to put the vertebrae back into place. But in the meanwhile, the muscles next to the vertebrae contracted -- I guess trying to stabilize it. And then the muscles next to those, and more muscles, until my whole upper quadrant was in constant tetany. It would quiver when I lay down to sleep. I was in constant pain, and I mean pain. Eventually it spread over my whole body and a doc diagnosed me with FM. I was crushed. I didn't want to spend my life with FM. Finally a new PT showed me a couple of tricks. It took me 3-4 months, but I finally got control of the pain. When it would start in my spine, I would do these things she showed me & stop it from spreading into the muscles. And the whole-body pain thing went away. Pain causes depression and depression causes pain. And when you hurt so much that that's all you can think about, I think that increases the pain too. There's also a condition whose name I unfortunately have forgotten, where a localized pain can cause the pain receptors in the brain to interpret normal signals as pain, so you hurt all over, and muscles not related to the injury may even hypercontract as if you had cerebral palsy. It's curable with the help of a pain mgmt doc (if he knows what you've got -- it's rare). Ann ANKLE PAIN > > > > > > Hi, > > Do any of you have ankle pain as well as knee pain? Guest guest
Hey group! I've started experiencing ankle pain. My toes and feet in general do not hurt, It is my ankles. I rate the pain for the last 3 days a 7 to an 8. Rest does nothing. There is also not alot of swelling. My wrists are hurting me as well, same pain rating. I've got 3 painful fingers, 2 of the usual ones that have been injected in the past. Morning stiffness has increased to almost an hour to " uncoil " and begin to function. I notice that later in the day, or at night, I begin to stiffen up again. I'm seeing my Rheumy on Tuesday. I'm actually a bit nervous about it because if he checks the inflammation, I bet it comes out to none!!! Why pain then? Am I losing my mind? He's very clinical....he's never denied my pain, and will do a thorough exam and order more tests...I'm confused at this point...what is this? LOL...arg! Thanks for letting me rant. Heidi in Mass. Guest guest
Heidi, I've been having the same thing lately - ankle pain. Pain level is about the same and I'm having very little swelling as well (although, I'm not much of a sweller anyway) Similar thing happened with my left wrist this summer - lots of pain, no real swelling that I could tell but decreased range of motion. When I saw my rheumy in July, she checked my wrists and immediately felt inflammation that I couldn't find.I just knew I was in pain. She gave me a cortisone injection which worked for a few days, but I'm back to where I was before. I'm supposed to go see her in a couple of weeks and I'm wondering what she's going to do next especially regarding the wrist and ankle thing. It's been a battle getting her to believe me when I'm in pain because I don't really swell much, but once I can talk her into x-rays there is evidence of damage (ugh!) Have you tried wearing an ankle brace? I have one and will wear it when it's really bad - sometimes helps. I hope you're able to figure it out, it is very frustrating! Take care!
