Guest guest
, I too had trouble breathing and occasional bouts with gagging. I didn't even have to be doing anything to cause the gagging. It would happen spontaneously and continue for various periods of time, sometimes as long as a couple of hours. I could even be sitting at the computer or watching TV. I didn't vomit, but it came very close on occasion. Also, I didn't gag when I coughed. Instead, I had intense electric-like shocks that would run down my arms to my fingers and also down my back into my legs and feet. This wasn't really painful, just bothersome. However, just prior to surgery, I would get an intense, blinding pain down the right side of my neck upon coughing or sneezing. This pain would literally drop me to my knees no matter where or what I was doing. And I was always coughing (I'm happy to say that since my recent surgery, I rarely ever cough and the drop-me-to-my-knees pain is gone). Also gone is the gagging. You asked if you should you be worried about this. In my opinion, anytime anyone is having breathing difficulties they should be worried and consult their doctor. If their doctor doesn't respond (which is what happened to me) or doesn't respond in a manner which you are comfortable/satisfied with, then see another doctor. This is how I ended up with Dr. Weingart at s Hopkins. He took my breathing difficulties very seriously for which I am very grateful. I had to have another decompression surgery in August 2000 (my first was done in 1990) to remove scar tissue and to further enlarge the foramen magnum. The scar tissue (from my original patch) had grown into my cerebellum and had to be dissected out. Also, Dr. Weingart found that the immense scar tissue had also surrounded my medulla (it's a wonder I could breath at all). Hence, lots of compression and no CSF flow. Also, a very, very large syrinx. Anyway, I believe Dr. Weingart is within a couple of hours of Hagerstown, land. I told him I was going to recommend him to other Chiarians in need of a doctor. In my opinion, he's great. I don't believe I would be here today if not for him. Please give his office a call and speak with Betty. He is accepting patients and since you are both in land, hopefully you won't have any problems with insurance. So far no vomiting, but its been close a couple times. This has also happened when I've had trouble breathing. The episodes never last long, so my neuro says not to worry about it. Question: should I be worried about it? Should I be searching for a new neurologist? Anyone have a good one within a couple hours of Hagerstown, MD?
