Hi ,

I haven't experienced any weight gain but I know that inactivity could

very well contribute to that if you have a slow metabolism.

I have lost a lot of muscle mass which makes me flabbier than usual and

I am trying to exercise to build it back up but it is a very slow

process. I don't think my body can ever be in as good shape as when I

got the PA since my ligaments and tendons are stretched which make my

joints more loose than they should be.

" And the beat goes on. "

I blame my wt. gain on prednisone, lack of exercise, and my big mouth. I

could eat everything I see and the containers it is in. I do want sweets which

I never cared for before. However, I do find days that I am busy in the car

doing errands and not near food that I don't really think of it. I have gone

from size 10-12 to 16. Got my work cut out. Good luck Betty

:

I strongly suggest regular exercise IF you have the energy and it's okay

with your doctor. Prednisone is a lifesaver but it really screws with

your metabolism. I truly feel for those whose disease is advanced and

don't have the energy to exercise. In addition, any type of exercise is

so good for the mind and the attitude, so even if you are not losing

weight you are still obtaining psychological benefits.

Before I was diagnosed I had lost 25 pounds in 8 months through hard

work, healthy eating and daily exercise - both weights and

cardiovascular. I had 8 more pounds to go to get to my goal (or else one

pant size.) Then I was diagnosed and started the Prednisone. I gained 8

pounds immediately (face and lower belly especially.) After reading that

I could gain 20-40 pounds on this drug I was crushed. But once I got all

my energy back I got back on my plan. I have been able to lose 6 of the

8 gained (in 8 long months) and am still working on it every single day.

Now that I am below 7.5 mg per day it seems to be a bit easier and my

face is back to normal.

Certainly don't push yourself if you're fatigued as this will totally

wipe you out and may set you back. As far as wondering how much weight

to lift, you should simply listen to your body and it will tell you if

you've done too much. But for most women, lots of reps with lighter

weights produces the toning results we are looking for.

Good luck to you!

Dear ,

Wow, you guys are all so great! Thanks for the advice . I love the

psychological benefits of working out as well. Exercise has always been my

stress reliever! Take care...

Hi Sharon, and all,

Oh, the weight gain! I have stopped looking when the nurse at the doc's

office weighs me!

I used to be so active...riding my horses, cleaning the stalls, lifting

bales of hay, etc. That helped with a lifelong struggle of keeping the

weight off. Now I am lucky if I can even walk out to the barn (no horses

anymore, just stray cats that we feed)...

preparing meals; forget that, too. We are keeping our local Chinese

take-out in business!

There is one meal, though, that is very easy to prepare, and it is

fat-free. It is " Fantastic Foods Vegetarian Chili " . All you add is

tomatoes, and beans (for those that can eat beans), and it is delicious.

You'll never miss the meat, and it makes enough for two nights' dinners.

If your local supermarket doesn't carry it, try the health food store.

Oh, and let me know when you find that big house with the chef that we

can all live in! And let's not forget about hiring a good housecleaning

service (LOL)!

Take care, Joan LI, NY

Oh, I thought you said your TSH was high. Well, when we are hyper our appetites

usually increase a lot. We also don't exercise because we don't quite feel

well. I know that when I am hyper I get nervous and grouchy, also have

irritable bowels, but I am usually tired just as much as when I'm hypo. Your

doctor will probably adjust your meds, just a little, to see if he can get you

closer to feeling better. In the meantime, eating wise is a good idea. Hope

all is well soon.

Re: hyperthyroid and gaining weight???

Did he say what your tsh was at? Sounds like you are hypo. It is very

hard if not impossible to lose weight until you are stabilized again.

When do you see your doctor? I hope it is soon. Try not to stress about

it. This will only make you feel worse. I wish that I had more of an

answer for you, hope someone else can offer more. It sounds like you may

need your meds adjusted in order to lose weight. I can understand that

you may feel anxious about that. I have always worried about mine being

changed because sometimes it takes a while to get things right again.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

I noticed that when I ate something that I became allergic to I blew up like a balloon. It happened when I used to eat carrots every day and rice cakes every day. I later learned that they are high in natural sugar and nothing should be eaten every day because you can become allergic to anything that way. My problem now is that I eat the same salad every day and I am worried that I will become allergic to it too. I already can't eat much or anything as it is.

I think the rule of thumb at times like this is to avoid eating the

same food every day- only once every four days.Otherwise your body will

recognize the bood entering your body w/out being digested as a threat

and develop antibodies for it. I was forced to the 4 day rotation

during my initial candida diet. And yes, I know how hard that is. I couldn't

even eat meat due to a skin problem, and then I became allergic to all

beans. That made me a "little" anxious. Unfortunately I started that a

little late: after I began having symptoms from everything. I feel the

biggest help has been avoiding nightshades (personally).

I can eat fish and poultry now, n/p. (3 weeks later)

I got that 4 day rotation diet from a Candidiasis program book I have

You can definately vary your vegetables, proteins, grains. Here is a book that is really helping me--and giving me variety. Allergy and Candida Cooking Made Easy. If you only eat one thing every 4 days then you are less likely to develop an allergy ..and you can overcome some allergies, although some food you must stay away from 3-6 months..

I believe the following foods facilitate weight gain and have anticancer

properties:

green drinks-- ideally fresh-pressed green juice

vegetable juice-- particularly fresh-pressed carrot & beet juice

potatoes

carrots

beets

whole wheat

millet

brown rice

Vit. C

fruits-- particularly grapes (for cancers that aren't estrogen-dependent) and

bananas (but not on empty stomach, since bananas contain so much sugar).

However, according to , most people w/melanoma (as well as

leukemia, lymphoma, & myeloma) should avoid citrus.

Best wishes,

Most vegetables have estrogen in them including carrots. Grapes i believe have estrogen inhibiting properties.

Sounds like I should be eating alot of grapes to keep from getting cancer. I hope this applies to breast cancer, lymphoma and melanoma.

I was on 60 mg of prednisone when I was first diagnosed. Since I didn't know

anything about prednisone, I didn't know that weight gain was a side effect.

I have always been a very thin person, so when I started gaining weight I

freaked out! (I know, I know, it should have been the least of my concerns,

but it still bothered me). If you're on a pretty high dose, you will notice

the weight gain pretty quickly -- though it's different for everyone. For me

personally, my appetite came on so suddenly (because prednisone messes with

your blood sugar). So, where I used to be able to easily control my

appetite, on the prednisone, I would suddenly become ravenous! Even though I

was exactly eating a lot more, I still gained weight because of the

prednisone. However, the good news is, once you start to taper the

prednisone, the weight does come off! Believe me, I'm off prednisone now,

and I'm back down to my pre-diagnosis weight with no dieting. The fact that

the weight does come off once the prednisone is tapered is only one of many

reasons to take care of yourself so that you can get off the nasty stuff!

Kathleen, I'm down to 7.5/5.mg Prednisone (after 80 mg this past summer), I eat less than I used to, I'm just as active, and I weigh exactly the same as I did after six weeks of prednisone -- 40 pounds more than before. So, apparently some of us have to take more action to get rid of the weight.

I lost about 20# by following a diabetic diet when I was still on about 30mg. The key was eating every 3 hours. That basically added 3 snacks to my day. A piece of fruit, a couple cookies, whatever...It was amazing how that curbed the overeating.

Once I was below 5mg, I started losing again and have now lost 40#...still have about 40# to go, but it's coming off about a 1/2 pound per week now. Hang in there, even though it goes on fast, slow loss is the surest way to make sure it doesn't come back.
