MAY YOUR DAY BE BLESSED WITH JOY

Yeah. My doctor says there is no reason for me to have a weight problem at my maintenance level of Prednisone (7.5/5.0 mg.) However, I don't eat nearly as much as I did before I began Prednisone, and I'm more active than when I had a desk job, yet the weight doesn't budge. I'm 45 pounds heavier than a year ago, when I thought a five-pound loss would give me just the weight I wanted. But I'm alive and well!

Yes - we've only been on the enzymes a month and I can *see* that

Luke is putting weight on. From his 2 year checkup to his 3 year

checkup he grew 5 inches and did not put on ONE pound, so we were a

little concerned at his weight (granted we are a tall, slim family

but he was pushing it). At his 3 year check in Nov he was 40 " and 32

pounds, his little brother has a checkup end of this month and I'm

anxious to get Luke on the scale, too, just to see. But I know his

appetite is better. Guess if you're digesting your food well you're

more likely to want to eat, huh? :>)

-My daughter started to gain more regularly just on the gfcf diet-

also her hair thickened and grew, eyebrows were more filled in, got

amazingly thick, long eyelashes...but now just 2 weeks into the

enzymes I can tell she has gained! She has rounded out in the face

and has a tiny pooch in her tummy that she has never had! So

wonderful to see :)

I'd like to chime in here. When we started the diet more than a year ago

our son was and had been below the pediatrician's chart in weight. He was

scrawny, and his ribs were visible. I remember this very well as it used to

disturb me to see him with his shirt off.

Within a few months of starting the GFCF diet we still weren't 100% sure

that it worked, but one thing my wife and I could agree on completely was

that his eating habits had improved greatly and he filled out. After a

while the ribs got covered and he " made it on the chart " when the

pediatrician next weighted him.

I truly think he's done as well as he has in great part because of this

diet. In fact he's done so well that his pediatrician has now ordered he be

gluten and casein free, and also ordered his school to give him an enzyme

tablet when there is an infraction. For their part, the school has been so

conscientious about the diet that there have not been any infractions.

My child has growth issues also. She has not started gaining weight

yet, but she did have microcephaley (head circumference below the

3%). Right before we started proefa she was below the charts for

head circumference and within 6 wks she was in the 25%. Her doctors

kept measuring her and saying wow she's not microcephalic anymore. I

just giggled as they also commented on how she just

seemed " different " now. Hopefully the weight gain will come soon!

ProEFA a few months ago and decided to give my 15 month old (with a

resolved immune dysfunction) a half dose of the children's DHA

formula (also by Nordic Naturals). She started about a month ago.

Well, last week both my kids went in for check ups and they were

both in the 50th percentile for weight. I am not sure if this has

anything to do the with EFAs helping their bodies regulate their

weight or if just getting that extra oil each day has helped. In

any case, I thought it might be worth mentioning in case any of you

have kids with growth issues.

This is really interesting. How many out there have a growth with their

children and EFAs at the same or general time? I know children are always

growing and this could be coincidental- huge wink.

One reason this could be important to me is if my son has grown then he may

indeed need a new glasses prescription. Everyone thinks he has but I have no

idea if he really has or not. He's just always been big and people note size

with him. (he was 11 lbs 12 oz at birth! ouch)

I may have to attempt to measure him. Now I'm more convinced to take him to

have his eyes checked again. I'd wanted a bit more time first.

(on the efas that is)

Hi Mickey!

I gained about 50 pounds about the time I was diagnosed too! Did anyone else out

there gain a lot of weight (for no apparant reason) at the onset of the PA? I've

always wondered if it had anything to do with the disease or not? I was 110

before all this came up!!

Hi Mickey and Jackie - me too! About 40 pounds although in the past

2 months I have cut back on sugars, breads, trans fats and eaten

really healthy and have lost 12 of them (only 30 or so to go!). I as

well wondered if there was a correlation - from a size 6 to a 14

(yuk!). Doesn't help the self-image and I assume I'm not the only

one whose self-esteem had already plummeted because of the PA... the

added weight was an " extra " (lol).

HOPE EVERYONE IS HAVING A GOOD DAY TODAY.

Yes, but I blame the weight gain on the medication Prednisone & Enbrel and

being able to do so much less in the way of activity and then eating more to

feel better because I felt so lousy being in pain almost all of the time.

I also gained about 50 pounds. I used to be thin and now It is so hard for

me to lose no matter what I do. At the same time I started with the p and PA

which was about 17 years ago, I also developed a thyroid disorder.

(underactive). Maybe you should be checked for this as well.

Hi Janet,

Yea, thyroid is something to think about. They keep checking mine (probably have

checked it 5-6 times over the years), but it never shows anything. My doctors

say I am a big mystery.......they can never figure things out when I have wierd

symptoms!

Wow did the weight thread hit a nerve. I have been fighting to lose

weight (25 lbs in the last year) but my rheumy put me on a Prednisone

burst and all of a sudden my head looks like a watermelon.

Mickey, I do feel for you. I used to tread the boards and now all I

can do is whimper when I read a call for auditions.

Does Enbrel cause weight gain? When I was on mtx I was so busy being

sick that I really didn't gain too much then. I like Enbrel much

better.

Ebrel does cause weight gain according to the insert. If I don't watch my

diet and work out, I can easily gain 5 pounds in a week. I've been on Enbrel 2

years and I would trade my a few extra pounds for how this drug has changed my

life any day.

I went to a doctor a few weeks ago that specializes in weight loss and he

told me that I am on 3 meds that cause weight gain. HRT, Enbrel and the

synthroid makes me hungry.

Jackie,

My thyroid was also a bug question as well. About 6 months ago my GP began

my on 25 mcg of Synthroid and told me that my level was in the middle and said

new studies have shown that those with the mid-line numbers benefit lots from

a low dose of Synthroid. It has made a world of difference since I have been

taking it. I have noticed that I don't have to nap as often and don't fall

asleep before dinner. It is worth asking your doctor about! Hope this is

helpful!

I had a Prednisone burst and then a prednisone taper 2 weeks later. It

made me thirsty and nauseous but I didn't end up with appetite or water

retention from it. A week after my prednisone taper I went on the South

Beach diet and have lost 20 pounds (doctor appointment weight, not

wishful thinking) in four weeks. I have 25 pounds to go and feel like

it's going to be easy. Once you start losing, people comment on it, your

clothes fit loose, and you start fitting into old clothes you didn't

realize you missed so much.

I'm 28, so my metabolism hasn't hit completely hit the fan yet, but

dropping pounds has been easy once I completely changed my diet/outlook

on food. If you're disciplined enough to stick to the book, the weight

goes away and you wonder why the depression and struggle every existed.

Good luck.

Unfortunately, Enbrel (or something) has made me gain 15 pounds since I started

on it 15 months ago. This is the way I look at it - in most cases to get

something you have to give something up. Enbrel has worked like a charm for me.

Good luck.

Up until a couple of years ago I never weighed into triple digits. I'm almost 5

feet and usually average around 95-96lbs. Well I was on prednisone for nearly 2

years and I gained about 10lbs (106-107). I was pretty devastated since I was

always tiny. I'm small boned and really short so any added weight really shows.

It took me about a year to get back down to my original weight. I'm glad to say

that I'm back down to 92. I think another reason I had started to gain weight

was I became really inactive since I was in too much pain to move. I am still

inactive but I think that my metabolism is finally back to normal now that the

steroids are completely out of my system.

good luck.
