Guest guest
Abby, I don't really focus on " not denying myself " ...I focus on eating what I love, like, and what helps me feel stronger. I realized yesterday that some things I still eat out of habit...because I've eaten certain foods or dishes for years or I know the recipes for some meals and they are convenient. I've decided to stop making a certain meatball dish because it's too sweet for me now and I have another alternative meatball dish that tastes much better to me with a simple marinara sauce. If you're really " wanting " sugary stuff, I might explore some of your feelings around a sense of rebellion or needing to make your life " sweeter. " I have a pretty big sweet tooth, but there are only certain times when I truly " intuitively " want something sweet. Like there are some times when I just want a piece of cake. Usually, I'm using sugary foods to get quick energy or some type of " high " to numb or feel better or I see a reese's cup and I eat it because I'm too lazy to put in the effort to get something more substantial. So, in a sense I'm feeling " attracted " toward sweet foods (which are a plenty in this sugar crazed society) and on some level it's more of a habit. The " intuitive " part of intuitive eating is an art and a body-based sense that is developed over time. I've realized that alot of times my " wanting " something has nothing to do with my intuition and paying attention to or feeling into the needs of my body...it's usually more of a thought working...like I want this or that...and thoughts can be tricky because they can have all sorts of unconscious motivations behind them. Have fun and explore...maybe experiment with more foods that are appealling to look at, taste, smell, touch, etc. Latoya > but then i'm told not to deny myself anything... so what do i do? > > thoughts, anyone? > > abby
Guest guest
Hi Abby, I had to come to terms with this issue recently myself. Not only was I gaining a lot of weight from eating so much sugar (I have been doing I.E. for 7 months), I also was developing problems with inflammation in my joints, and with my teeth. My teeth became so sensitive that I was in almost constant pain. I knew I needed to back way off the sugar but wondered how that would work with I.E. I have been doing it for about a week now and it has been going well. I have lost 4 pounds and the pain in my teeth and joints is almost gone. What I have told myself is that I CAN eat sweets if and when I really want them and choose to do so. But I can also choose to honor my health with gentle nutrition. (Principle 10 of Intuitive Eating) With a diet, you are told you CAN'T have certain foods. With Intuitive Eating, we are told there are no foods we cannot have. But that doesn't mean that just because our body asks for a certain food that we cannot choose to reach for something healthier. The key point is that it is our CHOICE, just as we sometimes choose to eat when we are not hungry or we choose to eat beyond fullness. As long as we get to make the choices, there is nothing, and no one to rebel against. And that makes all the difference. B. > > > Welcome!! Chocolate was also a huge downfall for me as well. Guest guest
thank you, . that's really helpful. sometimes it's hard to know how to fit all the pieces together, but the way you put it makes perfect sense. i've been going around muttering " gentle nutrition " to myself like a mantra the last few hours. i feel like things suddenly make a lot more sense. thanks again!
