Don't know if it helps, but I was told my son should take benadryl with one of his medications to avoid ticks. Please ask your doctor if this would help with the risperdal. My son took risperdal for many years but there were no ticks side effects. (He did gain a lot of weight, but no ticks).

Good luck

I came across this previous e-mail today ---after hearing from a Psychiatrist that my daughter may have this as well (oral motor.) Were you able to see improvement with any meds since April? I'm very concerned now with not being able to stop her continual mouth/chin movements!

Thank you for your suggestion! We luckily got an appointment with the Neurologist next week to tell us what he thinks. I just hope its not permanent! We are weaning her off Zoloft now (may have been a culprit to her issues of diskinesia?) I read an article that mentioned infants that have lost oxygen when they were born could get this--- my daughter lost oxygen a few times due to GI reflux which caused Apnea.) I will bring up Benadryl in conversation.

Thanks,

My son who is 24 takes a low dose of Risperdol - 1/2 of a 0.5 mg tablet mornings and a whole 0.5 tablet at bedtime. He has never had a problem w/ tics either. As you said, our doctor told us a children's Benadryl should take care of any tics. We take this low dose and combine it with Depakote (unfortunately this can cause diabetic complications). My son also has the meltdown/anger management problems. For a while we used manganese to control the problems, but around age 18 the problems became impossible to control with the herbals and natural products. Hi,

Yes, tics went away after stopping the risperdal, it took about 6 weeks, he takes klonopin and vitamin E to control the tics. He now has some blinking constantly, we do not know if it really was diskinesia or just a tic. The neurologist does not want to take any chances and she does not want to put him on Risperdal anymore. During the summer I have more control for his behavior at home,we'll worry in a couple of months before school start what is going to be the medical plan for him, risperdal did help him to control his behavior and he did absolutely fantastic while he was on it. Good Luck!!!

Good Luck!!! Thank you for the information. When I speak to the neurologist next week, I will bring up Klonopin (which may work for her as a double fix- help anxiety as well.) She is on Focalin and Zoloft. This brings up a confusing issue. The Psychiatrist said if it was tic movements, its from the Focalin (a form of Ritalin). However, if its diskinesia (more of a non-stop pulsating motor movement and lip protrusion) it can be from the Zoloft. We are weaning her off the Zoloft -the route at this point.

Have you ever check his amino acid levels???

Taurine can help a lot with tics.
