Guest guest
Hi All: My doctor told me that from his experience I had several choices: 1) not have the surgery and remain the same or get worse. 2) have the surgery and remain the same, but stop the progression. 3) have the surgery and get better or 4) have the surgery and due to complications get worse. He said he had seen it all and was very curious as to what my outcome would be since I was very strong physically. I had no other physical problems ever. Only a bad cold had ever made me have to go to a doctor. I jogged 6 miles three to four times a week since I was 17 and had spent many years in the U.S. Army. He said many of his patients had other illnesses and had been sick all their lives. I knew nothing about Chiari back then. Now I know from reading these posts just how sick some of us are and some have been. It was my decision to have the surgery and #2 choice was my outcome. I did not want to find myself in a wheelchair 4 or 5 years from now and look back wondering if the surgery could have helped or given me a better quality of life. When I went to my one year check up with my neurologist (not the neurosurgeon) he said that I would be the way I am for the rest of my life and that I might notice as the years go by, my getting a little worse. Not because of progression again, but just every 5-10 years a little worsening due to age. This of course is barring any accident that could trigger the cerebellum to drop again. I'm glad I had the surgery. I still enjoy life and in the 1 1/2 years since the surgery, so far, there has been no progression. Before the surgery I almost made it into a wheelchair in the 3 months that it took to schedule everything. In fact I'm still a little better than before though many symptoms have returned. I dont post much, but I pray for all of us daily. Love to all Carmen Re: Surgrey > Hi All and Bill: > > I wanted to post this cause I am interested in what others doctors have said. > My surgeon told me that thru the years the symptoms would get worst. Guest guest
, I was not told that by my Dr as I didn't question his judgement as I knew I had to have something done. I have however, read lots of the info on the internet and that is what I got out of it. That is another reason why I didn't question as I had seen my own symptoms increase in a big way over the past year! I feel for everyone that have all these symptoms and the Docs won't do surgery. I guess they have their reasons and it certainly isn't an easy surgery and there is the potential for lots of complications. It's like the Dr's can't take out everyones appendix just because they have abdominal pain. Maybe they truely think there are other causes. I really don't know and don't understand. Hope all is well with you. I am 6 weeks post op now and other than some incisional tenderness and a few neck spasms, I am doing great. Feel better than I have in years! Tale care and God Bless!
