Guest guest
According to the DSM, ADD/ADHD are not on the high functioning end of the spectrum. There is no 'spectrum' in the DSM. They are all separate diagnoses. And, the criteria for each diagnosis is objective. There is no term, "Autism Spectrum Disorders" in the DSM. Also, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and learning disorders are separate diagnoses, not related to autism. They can be mutually exclusive. If a child has some obsessive compulsive traits, they are better accounted for by the diagnosis of Autistic Disorder, PDD, NOS or the like. If a child is given a separate diagnosis for OCD, then it is likely for billing issues and the child is going to receive medication. Autistic D/O, etc. is not billable. The 'spectrum' is a term adapted from school/educational systems, parents and others more closely involved with autism and those that brought it to the media's attention (Autism Speaks, etc). The school board does not diagnose. Diagnoses can only be made by psychologists, neurologists, licensed clinical social workers, licensed mental health counselors, etc. Recently, there have been some who believe/claim ADD/ADHD is the "high end of the spectrum" however, others contest that there is not a lot of science to back up this claim. The spectrum is also very subjective in terms of what fits under the 'umbrella', whereas the DSM criteria are objective. I think saying, "My kid is on the spectrum." Or, "My kid has autism." was easier for some than saying, "My kid has a Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified." Particularly since Autism Speaks and others have brought so much attention to it. The term, 'Autism Spectrum Disorders' was adapted to include Asperger's Disorder, Autistic Disorder and PDD, NOS. Hope this helps. Re: DSMV Definition of ASD ADD and ADHD are on the high functioning end of the Autism Spectrum and Autism is at the other end.
