Guest guest
Hi Stacey My 9 year old autistic boy has just learnt to ride his bike (with stabilisers) after years of trying!! He just seemed unable to push the pedals forward until I took his bike to school and his teachers and OT spent some time with him simply sitting him on the bike, giving him a push forward so he was freewheeling on his own and prompting him to push the pedals with his feet. He got it in a day and has never looked back - he loves riding his bike now and it's given him alot of self-confidence. Hope this helps. Caroline Has anyone had any luck/experience in teaching their kids to ride a bike? My son is 12, high functioning autistic but can't ride a bike yet. I want to teach him this summer and don't know where to start. Any tips??Thanks in advance for any direction you can poitn me in.Stacey
Guest guest
When my son was learning, we got some heavy duty training wheels. He used both for about 3 weeks, then we took one off and he used it for awhile, then we took the last one off and he was able to ride. I hope it works for your child. Guest guest
Hi Stacey My son had a hard time pedalling, so we broke down bike riding into seperate skills. You could use a stationary excercise bike or a kid bike w training wheels that were blocked up like an excercise bike and have him master pedalling first. If you can find a gentle hill (yeah, in Florida) that helps a lot too. Parents just can't keep up with the running along side thing for too long but a hill works great, doesn't have to be much of a hill. Good luck Steve > Has anyone had any luck/experience in teaching their kids to ride a > bike? My son is 12, high functioning autistic but can't ride a bike > yet. Guest guest
I am trying to teach my 4 year to ride a bike and were trying with a trike What are stabilizers? She can't seem to push the pedals or keep her feet on the pedals? I hear there are special bikes. Is that the case. Any any advice? Guest guest
My 4 year old is still working on it but his OT told me she velcros his shoes to the pedals so his feet don't slide off. Maybe that will help. Has anyone had any luck/experience in teaching their kids to ride a bike? My son is 12, high functioning autistic but can't ride a bike yet. Guest guest
Stabilizers are extra little wheels you attach to the frame either side of the bike to support the back wheel. This means the bike freestands and can't fall to the side. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Yes, Gobike came down here back in Dec. 06. I had enrolled my daughter but she was denied because they thought she was too young. She was 6 at the time so I was disappointed. I got the impression that the class got really booked up fast though. I was hoping that they would come down again but to my knowledge they didn't. Does anyone know if there any plans for them to come down again?
