Guest guest
Hi, all. My three and a half year old autistic son is about to get initial evaluation for ABA and start a 10 hour/week therapy the end of this month. He can only say a few words and do not use them effectively for communications. We have been giving him Omega-3 fish oil for the last two months before realizing that we should give them an Omega-3 and Omega 6 mixture. I just got it yesterday from GNC. Anyway, since my son not only have speech issue, but also other sensory integration issues. There are only very few things that he would eat and he has tantrums frequently. So my question is how long would ABA therapy normally take to see any effect on his speech, eating behavior, or tantrum? Thx, Xun
Guest guest
Hello All, I wanted to let you know that a new school is opening in West Kendall, Miami, Fl which my son will be attending for the new shcool year. The director and owner is a speech language pathologist who specializes in implementing behavior techniques along with speech therapy. This is what has been working for my son. She is board certified as well in behavior. The school is called Beyond Expectations Academy and the focus of the academy is to close the gap as much as possible. The curriculum will be individualized as she really focuses on the child current level of functioning and build on that. If you want more information please call (305)495-6330 mention that you heard about it from Kendra. Regards, Kendra ___
Guest guest
Xun, Every child is different. I can tell you our experience is that it works. My son has made remarkable progress through ABA. It's always been slower than I'd wish for but so long as he is progressing that's the important thing. Give it some time and be patient it has to be at his pace. Good Luck. Guest guest
I’m glad you didn’t ask how long it would take to eliminate the problems. But I would think you should see some improvement within the first 3 months. You might also use the services of a Speech Pathologist for the language problem. You will probably see that the best approach to a tantrum is to ignore it. If a child gets what he wants by throwing a tantrum, guess what he is going to do every time he wants something and doesn’t get it? A Speech Pathologist with feeding experience would probably be the best person for feeding problem. And now for the fish oil issue……………. Guest guest
Hi, All kids are different and will respond differently. My son started 10 hours of in home ABA when he was 22 months old. They started with signing for " movie " (the only reinforcer at the time was the Wiggles for him). He progressed well but it was slow. One of the hardest things for my son was the transitions into the session and then dealing with the fact that the therapist had expectations of him, made demands and that he had to " work " . The first few sessions the therapist worked with just developing a friendly relationship with him - no expectations or demands. Before long my son was very happy when he saw the therapists coming to " play " with him. He had no words at all at that time when we started. After about 8 weeks when he started signing for " movie " we upped him to to 20 hours of ABA and he started saying a few " words " (sounds but attempts at words - we later found he had oral motor issues). He was also receiving OT and speech at that time. He is now 4 years, 5 months and attends a different program where he receives close to 40 hours of all combined therapies (including ABA 6 days weekly) and while we still struggle with verbal communication, sensory and some behavioral issues he has many, many words and has progressed beyond what I ever imagined when he was just barely 2 years old. But the initial ABA worked very well for him and was definitely the right step and he continues with it now as he needs it every day along with other therapies that have been introduced and we were very happy with his progression. How long it takes really depends on the child. Good luck! Liz
Guest guest
My 2 cents- I haven’t been following these emails so forgive me if I repeat anything that has already been written-but your son sounds just like like my son when he was little (he’s now 14). We did lot’s of sensory play-rice, ball bean bins-we also did shaving cream in the bath tub as well as finger paint tub stuff- my son wasn’t able to take a bath and it took SO much work to desensitize him for bath time & washing hair-but I am so glad we did because addressing his sensory issues early on opened many doors. We brushed him swung him in blankets rolled him-deep pressure with therapy balls-so on and on. Everything we did with him we paired it with something he loved which at that time was very limited (books-only certain books with certain characters and usually ones that were hard to find) We found a magna doodle to be a great way to pair letters & sounds together and most importantly desensitize him with feeding issues. It took our son so long to make progress on his feeding program because there wasn’t much in the way of feeding programs 14 years ago-take advantage of the experts out there. The speech therapist who helped us the most with his feeding issues is Lori Levy . Please feel free to email me privately if you have any questions. Best of luck!
