Carbs and satisfaction

For the last two years or so, I have done my best to cut down on my

carb consumption and instead focus on eating lots of protein and tons

of veggies. Yet, I would always be hungry after 1.5 or 2 hours after I

ate even if I ate tons of string beans, carrots, etc. Turns out I

would eat till I was neutral, but not really full, so then I would

hate myself for being hungry because after all, " didn't I just eat? "

This would usually lead me to waking up in the middle of the night

after a seemingly " right dinner " of protein and veggies " and eating

what else: crackers, cookies and carbs!

Then I read the part in the book that said it takes three pieces of

bread (amount of carbs) to sustain yourself after running two miles! A

light bulb went off in my my head! No wonder I was always so hungry

and had so little energy even if I ate the " right foods! " I didn't

have any energy because I had cut carbs out, or only ate till I was

just barely neutral.

So I tried reintroducting a satisfying amount of real carbs back into

my diet. I had chicken and had some white angel hair pasta along with

it and some asparagus. I was excited about the white pasta. And guess

what? I wasn't hungry after lunch at all, and I made it to dinner

pleasantly hungry not raging! And, I ate the same stuff for dinner and

I slept through the night without waking up to eat!

Carbs! Who knew!?! Has anyone had a similar experience going through IE?

Yes, I have experienced that as well with both carbs and fat. It seems our bodies do need the carbs and fat to feel/stay satisfied. I had been so trained to believe that carbs and fat were "bad". Every diet I have ever attempted encourages and promotes low carb/low fat. It has taken alot of positive self-talk for me to really feel ok with carbs/fats. I used to only eat those types of foods during binges.

I definitely feel better and don't feel constant hunger now that grains/carbs/fat is a regular part of my intake. Who knew???
