Savage Has Syndicator’s Support

By JACQUES STEINBERG; Compiled by

JULIE BLOOM

Published: July 25, 2008

Talk

Radio Network, which syndicates Savage’s

program to more than 350 affiliates, said Thursday that it had decided to

reject critics’ calls to fire or suspend him over comments he made last

week suggesting that most diagnoses of autism represented a “fraud”

and “a racket.” In its first statement since Mr. Savage’s

remarks on July 16 the company said that it was “satisfied that he did

not mean any disrespect to autistic children or their families but was instead

reiterating his longstanding concerns on public health issues.” The

company added that it was “not appropriate to censor the opinions of its

hosts on legitimate issues.” In his comments Mr. Savage had said, in

part: “I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases

it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out.” So that

some " positive action” might result from the matter, the company

said, it would soon begin broadcasting public service announcements on

“legitimate autism issues.”
