Guest guest
Can anyone shed some light on problems with atypical gait on children with autism. My son wjo just turned 3 is still walking very stiff and clumsy and almost like he's pounding the pavement. His stance is wide and the OT therapists have said he's got a wide gait. His peditrician, of course, is no help. I've done all kinds of research on the internet and i read stuff like apraxia, hypotonia, etc but i'm kind of lost as to whether this is something that an orthopedic dr can address, a podiatrist, the neurologist, ??? He has low muscle tone and we've got him on some nutritional supplements, but if anyone has had similar issues, would greatly appreciate some guidance. Guest guest
My son is now 4 and has atypical gait. It was much more pronouced when he was smaller but with LOTS of OT (5 hours weekly) it is a lot better, less noticeable and most importantly easier for him to move around and he is more in touch with his body. He also has low tone and is kind of floppy/clumsy at times but the OT has helped tremendously. I would not atribute any of his progress on the particular supplements he takes - I've always thought it was all the OT. Good luck.
