I was so moved while reading chapter 11, which is on Principle 7: Cope

with Your Emotions Without Using Food that I decided to post some of

it here.

The authors give specific suggestions for ways to deal with your

emotions, and I will share them here.

If you find that you are using food to nurture yourself (me!), try

these alternatives:

1. Rest and relax

2. Take a sauna or jacuzzi

3. Listen to soothing music (can I recommend Herbie Hancock's " River " )

4. Take time to breathe deeply

5. Learn to meditate (there are some great few podcasts out there.)

6. Play cards with friends

7. Take a bubble bath in candlelight

8. Take a yoga class

9. Get a massage

10. Play with your dog or cat

11. Develop a network of friends

12. Ask friends for hugs

13. Buy yourself little presents

14. Put fresh flowers in your house

15. Spend time gardening

16. Get a manicure, pedicure, facial, haircut, etc.

17. Get a teddy bear and hug it

Also, if you are encountering feelings, you can choose to deal with

them or distract yourself from them - in healthy ways!

Deal with feelings:

1. Write your feelings in a journal

2. Call a friend (or several)

3. Talk about your feelings into a tape recorder

4. Release anger through punching a pillow or punching bag

5. Confront the person who is triggering your feelings

6. Let yourself cry

7. Breathe deeply

8. Sit with your feelings and discover how the intensity will diminish

over time

Distract yourself from feelings:

1. Read an absorbing book

2. Rent a movie

3. Talk on the telephone

4. Go to the movies

5. Take a drive

6. Clean out your closet

7. Put on some music and dance

8. Peruse a magazine

9. Take a stroll around the block

10. Work in the garden

11. Listen to a novel on tape

12. Do a crossword puzzle

13. Work on a jigsaw puzzle

14. Play with the computer

15. Take a nap

Aren't these great!? Thanks Tribole and Resch!!

(I also copied these out by hand and posted them on the fridge!)

>Thank you so much!!! I have all of this stuff I'm realizing since I

joined the group yesterday, but haven't known what to do about it. I'm

so happy to have ideas! I'm ordering the book tomorrow, but until then,

it's nice to see this list. By the way, this is for everyone, what other

books on this subject are your favorites? I want to get free shipping

from Amazon so I'll order at least $25 worth.

Jen, there is a Book List in the Files section here at this site (left

column). The books on the list have member's comments about them so

you can get an idea about how they felt about that book. You might

want to check out PaperbackSwap.com to see if you can exchange other

books (as in old diet ones ;-) for some of these?

Best to you , Katcha

Now if they only would work as good as food... :-)
