Guest guest
Alice, One little itty bitty amount can reek havoc on their systems. Then as they are weaned off it, smaller amounts can cause damage. Like a drug addict. Maybe at first it took a lot to get them high, but once they are weaned, a small amount can set them off. Also, it takes awhile to get out of the system. My son has been cf for 2 years, but only gf for a few months(big mistake-listened to dr who said he didn't need gf). A few weeks back, he licked an envelope that was on the floor. Well, that was enough of a challenge test for me. He was wired. I wouldn't even use it if there was a chance of cross contamination, but I have a really allergic kid. But, when you are starting out and new at it all, just narrowing it down bit by bit and weaning him off is good. Do what you can each day to eliminate things and find substitutes. It takes time, but you will catch on. I am still trying each day! Sorry, Phyllis ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Guest guest
HI! I know you already got your answer, but even though I don't know what the answer is, I do know what is a very good Vanilla Cake mix. The Authentic Foods makes a very good cake mix. It's in the health food stores and if your HF store doesn't have it, you can either order it on line (by the way they make a very good Pancake and Baking Mix--it makes good muffins). The web site is www.authenticfoods.com. Or you can ask your local HF store to order and I'm sure they'll stock it for you (this way you don't have to pay for shipping--even though I'm sure they jack up the price!) I make a frosting from Book " Special Diets for Special Kids " . It's really delicious and it solved my problem for a special treat. I don't know if your son is on a very strick diet--being your new to the diet. If he is, then he can't have sugar which this mix does have sugar in it. The ingredient is called " concentrated cane juice " which is sugar in disguise. I spoke to the owner of Authentic Foods, so unfortunately I was giving my son sugar and didn't even know it! Anyway, fortunately he didn't have a bad reaction which was great. If your son isn't up to sugar yet...keep this mix in mind for the future! Enjoy, and hang in there! used to be on Prozac and then Zoloft before the diet. Now he's med free and doing much better with eye-contact, communicating, talking... Take care! Guest guest
Hi Alice! Welcome to the GFCF world! I know it seems overwhelming, but it does get easier...Does your son like pizza? You can make your own (I know you are too busy to make your own stuff--I can relate) I work full time and have two children--one of which is autistic (so you know what that means). Sometimes I make muffins instead of dinner and we eat anything for dinner....Pot luck. The diet is so important because once you start seeing results, it makes it all worth it and you won't dream of going off it! You'll see the little boy you used to know long ago...I don't know how old your son is, (I'm assuming he's a he and not a she!) but my son is 6, and I remember him very well (obviously) before he ever showed any signs of being autistic. This is the closest I've ever seen him behave to the way he was when he was a baby. He still stims a lot, but every other way he has shown improvement. Plus I hope you're going to a DAN! dr. They have a whole protocol they follow (it's not just the diet!). So I'm hoping for even more improvement! Hang in there and let me know any questions you may have...I've been there not that long ago and I know what your going through. It seems like the diet from HELL! Take care, Jeannie
