Guest guest
After being on the diet for nearly 8 months, our daughter's hair is noticeably thinner (thankfully she began with a thick head of hair). About a month ago she complained of itchy scalp, so we started her on zinc. The itchy scalp stopped. But, I think she is continuing to lose hair. Those of you who are supplementing with zinc, how much do you give your child per day (age and weight would be helpful). Shan weighs 41 lb and is 7 years old. Do you have any other advice on what I can do for her? I've also noticed that she has a permanent bang line. Part of her bangs grows but part of it is not growing. This may have been going on for 2-3 months. I originally thought it was due to her bangs being layered by the beautician and that they were growing out. Anyone else having or had hair loss/thinning problems? Shan has never had problems with her hair before. Are there any other possible nutrient deficiencies that could be causing this? Could the high fat intake be causing it? She's on a 3.3:1 ratio. I've noticed that her hair gets oily about 2 days after washing it. Guest guest
It is common on the diet. It's in Freeman's book as a known side-effect of the diet. Page 188, 3rd edition. He recommends a mineral supplement. We had it as well just as you describe. Our daughter has beautiful wavy hair. It started to clog the drains. The problem went away when we switched supplements to Cal-Mag-Zinc III from Whole Life in California. And I give 2 brazil nuts daily. They are supposed to have selenium. And maybe other trace minerals. Guest guest
Rhonda -- Leo had hair loss (probably from depakote and diet combo) but when we added zinc and selenium it seemed to stop it. Hasn't grown back but has stopped falling out all over his shirt. I'll check on the amounts when I get home. Its the smallest you can buy. thinning hair After being on the diet for nearly 8 months, our daughter's hair is noticeably thinner (thankfully she began with a thick head of hair). Guest guest
Rhonda, Shan may need Biotin. Some signs of biotin deficincy are eczema or itchy scalp and thinning or losing hair. Biotin deficiency can also be a cause of seizures. There is an inborn error of the metabolism called biotinidase deficiency associated with seizures. > After being on the diet for nearly 8 months, our daughter's hair is > noticeably thinner (thankfully she began with a thick head of hair). > About a month ago she complained of itchy scalp, so we started her on > zinc.
