Guest guest
Hi, You may also consider a private school with a shadow, this depends on your childs behavior and cognitive level. I truely believe in inclusion and always push my kids toward this goal of course with a lot of support. Wish you and your child the BEST! Aeleen, M.S., L.M.H.C. All About Therapy aeleent@... Subject: what are my options if I didn't like PLACE program in Coconut CreekTo: sList Date: Monday, August 18, 2008, 1:40 AM We recently moved to Broward County and my 3 yr. old daughter was going to start the PLACE program in Coconut Creek Winston Park Elem. we went last week to the meet and greet ans walked out in tears. I told myhusband that there would be noway I would put our daughter into that class not the actual program but that class. Here are some of the reasons youngest child, one of only 2 girls and not to mention that when I asked the teacher what the curiculum would be like she stated they would be learning colors, shapes, abc's and #'s 1-5. This is something my daughter mastered over a year ago through extensive therapy she can count to 30 forward and backwards knows all her ABC's in upper and lower case, knows all her and colors etc. They also wanted me to bring in treats gummies etc. as a reward system. We don't need those type of things for her. I just felt like this particular class wa not the right match for her. Now I don't know what to do. Are there other schools in my area that I can look into before I put her in? What are we supposed to do when we don't thikn that the placement for our child is the proper one? I think that the PLACE program would be great for her however not this particular class @ this particular school. Please help. I want to know what our options are.Thx! Guest guest
I placed my twin girls in the PLACE program at Norcrest Elementary and was very pleased with them. You may want to check them out. The school is in Pompano Beach. Good Luck.. Sandy Paolini -- Re: what are my options if I didn't like PLACE program in Coconut Creek My son started the PLACE program at a school inplantation at the age of three. We have been veryhappy with the school and program. Yes, thecurriculum seems basic but our school incorporatedmany other areas in to his day as well. They also hada reward system set up with in the classroom that wasnot food related.--- diaza1973 <diaza1973> wrote:> We recently moved to Broward County and my 3 yr. old> daughter was > going to start the PLACE program in Coconut Creek> Winston Park Elem. > we went last week to the meet and greet ans walked> out in tears. Guest guest
I spoke with a lady today, who says the program at Oakland Park Elementary has staff that are willing to parent input. I think you can get a transfer request form to transfer to a different school within the county. Just ask the principal of the school your child is currently assigned to. Guest guest
I have encountered the issue of "low expectations" from schools, therapists and a host of others (including an ex-spouse) through the years. My son is now 14, a capable young man, who is definitely differently abled but ABLED none the less. When I have set the bar high for him I am never disappointed, I may need to tweek a bit for his uniqueness but that is ok...Be realistic, shoot high, adjust if you have to, and remember that there is a reason it is called an IEP ...Individual being the key component...do not let anyone sell your child short..and bring any and all data if you have it to show them, include any and all therapists at IEP's, bring videos of your child, write your own IEP and show them what you want...and how it should be done....nothing says you can not do that..that always opens dialogue...You are the voice for your child.. --------- what are my options if I didn't like PLACE program in Coconut CreekTo: sList@ yahoogroups. comDate: Sunday, August 17, 2008, 9:40 PM We recently moved to Broward County and my 3 yr. old daughter was going to start the PLACE program in Coconut Creek Winston Park Elem. we went last week to the meet and greet ans walked out in tears. Guest guest
Ida, you are not crazy. I sometimes think they should drop the letter “I” in the IEP. They should build on your child’s strengths. It is a real shame to see the inflexibility of the school system. Who ever said that a child has to develop according to someone else’s schedule? For me the greatest evidence of the school’s failures is in the fact that parents have to resort to private therapy because the school refuses to do what they are suppose to do, educate the individual child. I have never been a great fan of Baudhuin primarily because it is a private school that just happens to do the same thing as the public school but at a lower cost. In any case, low balling the goals ends up looking good on paper. From: sList [mailto:sList ] On Behalf Of Ida Kessler Sent: Monday, August 18, 2008 6:07 PM To: sList Subject: Re: what are my options if I didn't like PLACE program in Coconut Creek Hi, My son has been going to Baudhuin since May 2007. They have a good program but my experience has been that they too have low expectations of children with disabilities. Having said that, it is still probably the best public pre-school in west Broward. And I would recommend it over all the other ones I have come across so far. But I just want you to know it is a battle many of us parents have. Many teachers and school directors think that our children are so less capable to achieve than they actually are. In my opinion, their low expectations are more disabling to our children than their autism is! It is important that in the IEP area called " levels of performance " you have them listed all the skills she currently has. If the IEP is not clear in this respect, then it will be difficult to create a document that will help guide the ESE teacher towards your child development. If your daughter knows her abc's, have them work with her on tracing the letters now and learning how to grasp the pencil appropriately. The teacher could start working on recognition of simple sight words including her name, etc...If she knows her numbers to 30, try to have them put in the IEP that she should learn to count objects, and learn concepts such as " more " and " less " . My son taught himself to read at age 3 (I had nothing to do with it) and Baudhuin has told me that reading is NOT a pre-school skill so they will not be working with him on reading in the classroom. He is 4 now and reads level 2 books independently and understands what he is reading, but again, no thanks to the school. He counts to 100 and recognizes numbers up to a thousand (again, his own doing because in his classroom they count until 10 only). During private OT therapy the other day, his therapist was showing him the basic shapes (triangle, square, circle, rectangle) and he was bored and per he account said to her " what about a pentagon? " And he went on to draw one for her. Then he said " I want an octagon. " He is quite independent for a 4yr with his diagnosis, transitions well most of the time, is fully toilet trained, dresses and undresses himself, feeds himself, does independent work 10 minutes at a time if he enjoys the activity (then you need to prompt him to continue working), plays educational video games on his own now that he masters the use of a mouse, and can follow with only one verbal prompt 2 and 3 step directions. He tricks the teacher rearranging his PEC schedule so he can do his favorite activities first and is able to communicate his wants pretty well. Yet, the director informed me that he is not ready for Baudhuin's integrated classroom (they only have one, 50% typical, 50% ASD). He is not as " functional " as he needs to be to be ready for that class. His biggest challenge is socialization and using language to communicate with other children, and you would think they would place him in the integrated class so he can get the benefit of the typical role models with the special support Baudhuin offers. But no, I guess, they are waiting for him to overcome the symptoms of autism on his own before he is " ready " to be around a handful of typically developing students (along with the other ASD children) in their inclusion class. Maybe this sounds crazy just to me, I don't know...
