Eileen,

I hate to say it but pre SCD if I ate your almost pure protein diet

I would have gastro-paresis also. You could ask the doc for some

reglan (metclopromide), or try slowly adding in some vegs, like super

soft cooked peeled zucchini, acorn squash, pureed stuff. I still see

stuff in my poop but, at least its going through.

Hi Eileen -

I was glad to see you're using the BTVC-SCD Yahoo forum. It's really

an excellent group. Do you know about the Healing Crow site too?:

healingcrow They're good for GI questions that

aren't strictly related to SCD.

I too have a weight loss issue; I'm 5'2 " and went from 97 or 98 pounds

to 91 pounds in the first few months of SCD - my husband and friends

got very concerned. I'm now about 94-95 pounds, mainly by consciously

adding fats and proteins: cheddar and Swiss cheese, avocado, coconut

and olive oil and sometimes butter, full-fat home-made yogurt (you can

also try half-and-half for yogurt but I haven't), dripped yogurt or

DCCC (Friendship brand farmer's cheese) and also increasing fruits

like figs, dates, and raisins (if you can handle that much fructose -

start by cooking them in water), and of course ripe bananas and cooked

apples and lots of almond bread (about 3 slices a day) and winter

squash (I love butternut squash). Just start slowly and don't overdo

any one food. Digest Gold enzymes may help with digesting some of

this stuff. At first I was worried about cholesterol but I also take

Inositol Hexaniacinate ( " flush-free Niacin " ) and Policosanol and my

cholesterol has actually gone down.

I started making yogurt in little custard and yogurt cups on a warming

tray which worked very well once I adjusted the temperature right, but

it was tedious. Now I use the Yogourmet yogurt maker, which is much

easier and makes either one or 2 quarts at a time; it comes with a

thermometer and a muslin bag for dripping yogurt, and I use the

Yogourmet starter. I found the best price at Vitacost.com. For

heating the milk, I use a heat diffuser because my stove is too hot (I

think I got it a Miles Kimball or Carol years ago) and stir it

a lot.

The other interesting thing about SCD is that I used to have mostly

unformed stools and had to limit fruits, but now I have to make sure I

eat enough fruit (especially figs) or bulky foods (winter squash,

mangos, almond bread) to prevent constipation.

Good luck.

You can use the farmers cheese to make cheesecake, " Lois Lang's

Lucious Bread " , zucchini lasagna, and many other recipes, or eat it

plain, on almond bread, or mixed with cooked fruit. One of my

favorites is to add it to an omelet, so it's like a cheese-filled

crepe or blintz.
